[0023] For a general understanding of the context of the methods disclosed herein, as well as for details of the methods, reference is made to the accompanying drawings. In the figures, the same reference numerals refer to the same elements.

[0024] Figure 3 shows a prior art three-dimensional object printer 100 that ejects material to form support regions and object regions in layers. Printer 100 includes platen 104 and injector head 108 . Injector head 108 has a plurality of injectors configured to inject droplets of material toward surface 112 of platen 104 to form a three-dimensional object, such as part 116 , and a support area that enables part features to be formed. Specifically, injector head 108 has a first plurality of injectors configured to inject drops of build material to form an object and a second plurality of injectors configured to inject drops of support material, such as wax, to form a work frame to support the object to be formed. Two sets of multiple i...

Abstract

A method of manufacturing a three-dimensional object that facilitates removal of support material from the object. The method includes moving the object to a position opposite the microwave applicator, and operating the microwave applicator to change the support material from a solid phase to a liquid. The controller monitors the expiration of a predetermined period of time or monitors the temperature of the object to determine when to terminate operation of the microwave applicator. Since the support material has a dielectric loss factor greater than that of the object, the microwave radiation does not damage the object.

Description

technical field [0001] The systems and methods disclosed in this document relate to the processing of three-dimensionally printed objects, and more particularly to the removal of support material from three-dimensionally printed objects. Background technique [0002] Digital three-dimensional object manufacturing, also known as digital additive manufacturing, is a process of manufacturing three-dimensional solid objects of virtually any shape from digital models. 3D object printing is an additive process in which successive layers of material are formed in different shapes on a substrate. Layers may be formed by spraying a bonding material, directed energy deposition, extruding a material, spraying a material, melting a powder bed, laminating sheets, or exposing a liquid photopolymer material to curing radiation. The substrate on which the layer is formed is supported on a platform that can be moved three-dimensionally by the operation of actuators operatively connected to ...
