Embodiment Construction
[0031] Various embodiments of the present invention can be used with any osmotically driven membrane method, such as FO, PRO, OD, DOC, etc. Osmosity-driven membrane processing for solvent extraction from a solution generally involves exposing the solution to a first surface of a forward osmosis membrane. In some embodiments, the first solution (referred to as the treatment or feed solution) may be seawater, brackish water, wastewater, sewage, treatment stream, or other aqueous solution. In at least one embodiment, the solvent is water; however, other embodiments may use non-aqueous solvents. A second solution (referred to as a draw solution) having a high concentration of solutes relative to the first solution is exposed to a second surface of the forward osmosis membrane opposite the first surface. The solvent (eg, water) of the first solution can then be drawn through the forward osmosis membrane and into the second solution, which produces a solvent-rich solution via forwa...
