Problems solved by technology

However, when a pilot tone that identifies the wavelength of an optical data signal appears at the input of such a coherent waveform conversion system, the output pilot tone of the coherent waveform conversion system will not be able to correctly identify the converted wavelength; wavelength will still be the wavelength of the input optical data signal to the coherent waveform conversion system

Embodiment Construction

[0022] In general, the present disclosure provides a method and system for removing pilot tones from optical data signals. The method and system are applicable to digital wavelength converters that convert an input waveform at a first wavelength to an output waveform at a second wavelength, independent of the format in which optical data is organized. When operating in an environment where the input waveform has a pilot tone associated with it, the methods and systems of the present disclosure allow for the removal of a pilot tone from the input waveform and also allow for another pilot tone to be added to the output waveform. The other pilot tone correctly identifies the wavelength of the output waveform.

[0023] FIG. 1 shows a prior art wavelength converter 30 comprising a coherent receiver 32 , a digital waveform converter (DWC) unit 34 and a coherent transmitter 36 . Optical-to-optical (OE) converter 38 converts input optical signal 40 into two in-phase (I) analog electr...

Abstract

The present applies to digital wavelength converters that convert, independently of the format in which optical data may be encoded, an input waveform at a first wavelength to an output waveform at a second wavelength. When operating in an environment where an input waveform has a pilot tone associated thereto, the method and system of the present disclosure allows for the removal of the pilot tone from the input waveform, and also allows for the addition of another pilot to the output waveform.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to US Patent Application No. 14 / 598,581 filed January 16, 2015. technical field [0003] The present disclosure relates to wavelength conversion in optical networks. Background technique [0004] Optical communication systems are widely used today for data communication. Such systems typically use optical fiber as the transmission medium to allow high data rates and long distances. To avoid wavelength blocking and increase the fill of DWDM, wavelength conversion is required at the optical cross-connect (OXC) point. [0005] In such optical communication systems, it is known to employ a pilot tone to identify the wavelength of the optical data signal; the pilot tone is usually a low frequency modulation of the optical data signal. When it is necessary to convert the optical data signal of the first wavelength into an optical data signal of another wavelength, the pilot tone also needs...
