Problems solved by technology

However, due to the dimensional deformability of the glass during reforming, annealing and chemical strengthening, meeting low dimensional tolerances is challenging, especially for shaped glasses
In addition, traditional computer numerical control ("CNC") machining methods used to form features, such as channels, in glass articles, if performed prior to reforming, would cause uneven heating during glass reforming, which would May cause waviness and undesired deformation of the glass surface

Embodiment Construction

[0016] Reference is now made in particular to an embodiment of a method of making a glass article from a flat glass substrate sheet using laser destruction and chemical etching processes to form features in the glass article. Generally, laser-damaged regions are formed in the flat glass substrate sheet around desired glass article features (eg, channels, grooves, etc.). According to an embodiment, the laser damaged area is etched by subjecting the glass article or glass substrate sheet to an etchant solution, for example by immersion or spraying. In embodiments, the flat glass substrate sheet may be reshaped to obtain the desired three-dimensional shape of one or more glass articles before etching the glass substrate sheet and after the laser-damaged regions have been formed. Thus, in some embodiments, a laser-damaged region is formed with an initial geometry that pre-compensates for shape changes in the flat glass substrate sheet during the reforming, etching and / or strengthe...

Abstract

A method for forming a glass article and the corresponding glass article are provided. The method for forming a glass article includes providing a glass substrate sheet, and translating a pulsed laserbeam on the glass substrate sheet. The pulsed laser forms a laser damage region extending from first surface of the glass substrate sheet to a mid-point of the glass substrate sheet. The method further includes contacting the glass substrate sheet with an etchant solution to form channels at the laser damage region, the channels having width and depth dimensions of less than 150 [mu]m. The glassarticle includes a first surface, a second surface, a channel extending from the first surface to a point between the first surface and the second surface. The channel has width and height dimensionsless than about 150 [mu]m.

Description

[0001] background technical field [0002] The present description relates generally to methods of making channels in glass articles, and more particularly, to methods of making channels in glass articles by laser breaking and subsequent etching of the laser damaged areas to form the channels. Background technique [0003] Glass articles are used in a variety of industries, including the electronics industry where glass is used to cover display devices. Examples of such display devices include liquid crystal displays and light emitting diode displays, such as computer monitors, televisions and handheld devices. Three-dimensional glass products are increasingly used for their aesthetically pleasing appearance and feel. However, due to the dimensional deformability of the glass during reforming, annealing and chemical strengthening, meeting low dimensional tolerances is challenging, especially for shaped glasses. In addition, traditional computer numerical control ("CNC") ma...
