Embodiment

[0089] The table below provides modeled data indicative of certain performance characteristics of an exemplary mixing vessel comprising inlet agitators that rotate relative to each other in different directions of rotation (Rot. Dir.) (co-rotation Co or relative rotation X); the main agitator at different rotational speed (revolutions per minute (RPM)) conditions and relative rotational phase between the two inlet agitators. In each example, the main mixer was rotated clockwise at 11 RMP. The Stirring Effectiveness Index (SEI) was obtained by optical analysis of scaled simulated mixing vessels constructed from optically clear acrylic, using similarly constructed stirrers (main and inlet stirrers), and where paraffin was chosen for the simulated Viscosity of the molten glass, causing the paraffin to flow through the mixing vessel to simulate the flow of molten glass. The dye is then injected into the paraffin stream, which is imaged with a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera an...

Abstract

Disclosed is an apparatus for processing molten glass, and more specifically to stirring molten glass. The apparatus comprises a vessel including a main stirrer comprising an uppermost stirring blade, and an inlet stirrer, wherein for a horizontal plane extending through the vessel, the uppermost stirring blade being below the horizontal plane, the inlet stirrer is entirely above the horizontal plane. The vessel may include a plurality of inlet stirrers, and may be rotated in a variety of directions relative tom a direction of rotation of the mains stirrer. A method of processing molten glassis also disclosed.

Description

[0001] This application claims the benefit of priority under 35 U.S.C. §119 to U.S. Provisional Application Serial No. 62 / 157,576, filed May 6, 2015, the contents of which are based upon and incorporated by reference in its entirety . [0002] background technical field [0003] The present disclosure relates to apparatus for processing molten glass, and more particularly, to apparatus for mixing molten glass. Background technique [0004] Commercial-scale glassmaking is typically carried out in refractory ceramic furnaces, where raw materials (batch materials) are added to the furnace and heated to a temperature at which the batch materials undergo chemical reactions to produce molten glass. Various methods of heating the batch can be used, including gas burners, electric current, or both. In the so-called mixing process, the batch is first heated by a gas flame from one or more gas burners. As the temperature of the batch material increases and the molten glass forms, t...
