Abstract

Embodiments herein include methods and apparatus for automatic bias stabilization of MZM-based DP IQM to transmit DP-QPSK optical data and / or DP-16QAM optical data. The device simultaneously dithers the DC bias voltages of the in-phase progeny, the quadrature-phase progeny, and the parent MZM using three different dithering patterns in the time domain for the X and Y polarized IQ modulators are mutually orthogonal. A tap monitor photodiode detects the interference term between these three dither patterns for each polarization. This interference term is sampled with an ADC in the time domain. The time synchronization detection method can solve a system of ternary linear partial differential equations with three unknowns to compute a controlled DC bias voltage set on the corresponding MZM using a solution set that iteratively converges to a unique solution, thereby combining the dual The child MZMs in polarized IQMs are biased to minimum transmission and the parent MZMs are biased to orthogonal transmission.
