Problems solved by technology

[0005] However, since a single cell is spanned by multiple remote radio heads, the granularity of position determination is quite large
This leads to insufficient location accuracy in location-seeking wireless devices, leading to incompliance with emergency calling such as in Enhanced 911 (E911) by the FCC CSRIC (Federal Communications Commission Communications, Safety, Reliability, Interoperability Council) issues in the increased accuracy required for positioning of those specified)

Abstract

A method for determining the position of a wireless device is presented, performed in a network node connected to a plurality of remote radio heads via a combiner. The method comprises the steps of: adjusting the weighting of the uplink signal for at least one of the remote radio heads; measuring the signal quality of the combined uplink signal received via the combiner; repeating the steps of adjusting and measuring until the exit condition is true; and determining the position of the wireless device based on how the measured signal quality is adjusted differently for the weighting of the uplink signals of different remote radio heads.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a method, a network node, a computer program, and a computer program product for determining the position of a wireless device using a remote radio head. Background technique [0002] When deploying a wireless communication network, there is a balance between coverage and capacity. On the one hand, a few large cells can provide large coverage but at the cost of reduced capacity. On the other hand, scenarios with many small cells yield better capacity and throughput, but may not provide desired coverage. Therefore, there is often a combination of larger cells to provide adequate coverage and smaller cells to provide better capacity. [0003] However, when cells become too small, wireless terminals moving in the network cause a large number of handovers, which cause significant overhead. Furthermore, it can be quite costly to provide coverage indoors using many small cells, with a radio base station for each such small...
