The examples described herein illustrate that the disadvantages associated with vacuum dryers can be overcome by using a dryer in which material is dried in the presence of an inert gas or air that has been filtered to remove carbon dioxide. Abstract

A method for manufacturing a cathode material for a lithium-ion battery, the method comprising: generating a lithium-nickel composite oxide material during a manufacturing process, wherein the manufacturing process results in the presence of residual lithium in the lithium-nickel composite oxide in the material; cleaning the lithium nickel composite oxide material to remove at least a portion of the residual lithium, wherein the cleaning provides a moisture content for the lithium nickel composite oxide material; and the lithium nickel composite oxide material The material is dried so as to remove at least a portion of said moisture content, said drying being performed in an environment of substantially only inert gas or air substantially free of carbon dioxide.
