Abstract

The present invention generally relates to methods for additive manufacturing (AM) that utilize integrated ribs (224) to support thin walled annular structures (220). An annular wall (220) fabricatedusing AM has a thickness less than 0.022 inches (0.5588 mm) across a majority of a surface of the annular wall (220) and a plurality of ribs (224) having a thickness greater than 0.030 inches (0.762 mm). The annular wall (220) has a mean thickness less than 0.100 inches (2.54 mm). The annular wall (220) conforms to a surface of the component (210) and a mean distance between the annular wall (220)and the component (210) is less than 0.080 inches (2.032 mm).

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure generally relates to methods for fabricating thin-walled reinforcement structures using additive manufacturing (AM), as well as novel reinforcement structures fabricated by these AM processes. Background technique [0002] In contrast to subtractive manufacturing methods, AM processes generally involve the accumulation of one or more materials to fabricate net-shape or near-net-shape (NNS) objects. While “Additive Manufacturing” is an industry standard term (ASTM F2792), AM encompasses a variety of manufacturing and prototyping techniques known under several names, including die-free manufacturing, 3D printing, rapid prototyping / tooling, and more. AM technology enables the fabrication of complex components from a wide variety of materials. In general, individual objects can be manufactured from computer-aided design (CAD) models. A specific type of AM process uses a beam of energy (for example, an electron beam or electromagnet...
