[0062] An IVEK servo-controlled dispensing system (commercially available from North Springfield, USA, VT 5150) with a minimum resolution of 0.5 μl was used for all tests. Needles with polypropylene, stainless steel, ceramic, and pure PTFE constructions were evaluated. Dispensing needles made of polytetrafluoroethylene are commercially available from MicroGroup at Industrial Park 7, Medway MA 02053. Different formulations were also tested including SICOM Day & Night Monthly Disposal and SICOME Vision Oxygen Monthly Disposal. The parameters used to control the dripping and wicking of the lens forming material are: type of material used for the dispensing needle, amount to be retracted immediately after dispensing (retraction and amount of retraction), shape of the dispensing needle, diameter of the dispensing needle and the allocated allocation rate. All tests were performed when the lens forming material reached room temperature. Needle diameters were between 15ga-22ga and ...

Abstract

A method for dispensing a material into a mold for forming contact lenses, comprises the steps of: 1. providing a contact lens mold, 2. providing a dispensing needle (10), wherein the dispensing needle is made from a material having a surface energy less than 32 dynes / cm, 3. arranging the contact lens mold underneath the dispensing needle (10), 4. dispersing a fluid composition into a mold for making a contact lens, wherein the fluid composition comprises a lens-forming material, and the lens-forming material containing a solvent and is crosslinkable and / or polymerizable by thermal curing or actinic radiation.

Description

[0001] The present invention relates to a method of dispensing contact lens forming fluid material into a mold. Background technique [0002] Today, high-volume manufacturing of contact lenses, such as disposable contact lenses, is performed in highly automated manufacturing processes. Typically in such a process a predetermined amount of starting material is dispensed into the female mold half, eg by means of dispensing needles. Subsequently, the mold is closed by means of the corresponding male mold half, and thereafter polymerized and / or crosslinked the material contained in the mold in order to form the contact lens. Depending on the starting material used, it may contain suitable amounts of one or more solvents (usually volatiles) in order to keep the starting material in a flowable state. When the amount of solvent is insufficient due to solvent evaporation, especially during the manufacture of so-called silicone hydrogel lenses, these lenses may show striations or othe...
