Problems solved by technology

[0004] As previously mentioned, biofouling creates substantial problems
Biofouling can cause machines to stop working and water intakes to clog, to mention just two other negative consequences besides the increase in ship resistance mentioned above

Embodiment Construction

[0051] Hereinafter, the present invention will be explained with reference to application scenarios in which the present invention is used.

[0052] figure 1 A device for antifouling of surfaces of marine structures is shown. The marine structure 50 is shown partially in section. In use, the marine structure is in contact with a liquid (eg seawater) containing biofouling organisms. Assume that the liquid (eg, sea water, lake water, or any other aqueous environment) is conductive. The device has a power source 130 and a plurality of floating electrodes 110 arranged on the surface. The part of the surface that is covered is called the protected area 40, as indicated by the arrow.

[0053] The power supply has a first pole 131 coupled to a first conductor 121 in contact with the liquid, for example a metal electrode extending into the liquid. The power supply also has a second pole 132 coupled to the second conductor 122 in contact with the liquid. In this figure, the marin...

Abstract

An arrangement is provided for anti-fouling of a surface (30) of a marine structure (50) when in contact a liquid like seawater. The arrangement has floating electrodes and a power source (130) coupled to conductors in contact with the liquid, which conductors are distributed across the marine structure for providing an electrical potential across a protected area (40) of the surface. The floatingelectrodes (110) are arranged on the surface covering a protected area. Each floating electrode has a conductive layer being electrically isolated from the surface, and a dielectric layer (112) separating the conductive layer and the liquid. The power source is arranged to generate voltage pulses for charging and discharging the floating electrodes due to changes in the electrical potential for generating charging and discharging currents in the liquid at the dielectric layer. Effectively, such currents prevent or at least reduce biofouling.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to devices for the antifouling of surfaces of marine structures (eg ships in seawater) when in contact with liquids containing biofouling organisms. Background technique [0002] Biological fouling of surfaces exposed to water during at least a portion of their lifetime is a well known phenomenon that poses substantial problems in many fields. For example, in the field of shipping, it is known that biofouling on the hull of a ship leads to a severe increase in the resistance of the ship and thus to an increase in the fuel consumption of the ship. In this regard, it is estimated that up to 40% of the increase in fuel consumption can be attributed to biofouling. [0003] Typically, biofouling is the accumulation of microorganisms, plants, algae, small animals, etc. on surfaces. According to some estimates, more than 1800 species comprising more than 4000 organisms contribute to biofouling. Biofouling is thus caused by a w...
