[0023] Much effort has been expended to design techniques to reduce the power consumption of electronic devices. Mobile devices in particular benefit from these efforts because reduced power consumption extends battery life, allowing these devices to be used for a longer amount of time before the battery needs to be recharged. Approaches to reducing power consumption may focus at least some of their attention on reducing power consumption of display devices. The major energy sources associated with a display device are the backlight, the active matrix of the liquid crystals, and the processor tasked with generating the pixel data for display on the device. For example, some LED-backlit TVs have been designed with an array of LEDs positioned behind an array of liquid crystal elements so that the brightness of the backlight can be dimmed in areas of the screen associated with darker colors. Local area dimming can significantly reduce the power consumed by the display device.
