[0030] In this disclosure, use of the terms "a", "an" or "the" is also intended to include the plural unless the context clearly dictates otherwise. In addition, the term "comprising", "comprising" or "having" used in the present disclosure specifies the presence of stated elements, but does not exclude the presence or addition of other elements.

[0031] An optical network may include multiple optical media segments, where an optical media segment may refer to an optical media segment terminating at both ends with means for adding, subtracting, filtering, routing, or otherwise processing optical signals. Examples of optical media may include any one or some combination of optical fibers, optical waveguides, or any other type of light guide through which information-encoded light may travel.

[0032] Optical media can cause distortion of optical signals transmitted through the optical media. One type of distortion is chromatic dispersion. Chromatic dispersion is caused by th...

Abstract

In some examples, an apparatus receives a first measurement of a plurality of wavelength channels obtained at a first location of an optical medium, and a second measurement of the plurality of wavelength channels obtained at a second location of the optical medium. The apparatus computes a value relating to dispersion in the optical medium by correlating the first measurement and the second measurement.

Description

[0001] References to related applications [0002] This application claims priority to U.S. Patent Application No. 15 / 590,168, entitled "Method and Apparatus for Characterizing Dispersion in Optical Media," filed on May 9, 2017, the contents of which are cited by reference way incorporated into this article. Background technique [0003] Information may be transmitted over optical media such as fiber optics or other types of optical media. Optical signals transmitted through optical media may be distorted. One source of distortion includes chromatic dispersion. Chromatic dispersion causes optical signals of different wavelengths to travel at different speeds in the optical medium, so that optical signals of different wavelengths arrive at the receiver at different times. Chromatic dispersion results in the broadening or dispersion of the light pulses that convey the information carried by the light signal. Contents of the invention [0004] According to various aspects o...
