The present invention relates to a safety device (20) for decreasing the total power output of a battery element (12) comprising at least one component (26) with porous material, especially of a Li-ion battery element (16), in response to a trigger signal, which safety device (20) includes a compression unit (22) for actively compressing at least the component (26) with the porous material, wherein the compression unit (22) is suitable for compressing the porous material in such way that the output current of the battery element (12) is significantly reduced as a result of a reduction of the porosity of the porous material due to the compression.
