Embodiment Construction

[0040] figure 1 An exemplary baggage testing system 10 such as could be used in an airport is shown. System 10 is provided to detect materials considered hazardous, such as explosive materials. The system 10 includes a conveyor belt 12 on which luggage cases 14 to be tested are placed. An x-radiation generator 16 is located on one side of the area where luggage cases 14 circulate on the conveyor belt 12 . The invention can be used with other types of ionizing radiation, such as gamma radiation. Generator 16 emits incident radiation 18 through luggage case 14 . Detector 20 is located on the other side of this area to receive radiation 18 altered by passing through luggage 14 . Modified radiation (also referred to as transmitted radiation) carries reference 22 . The detectors are connected to a computer 24 configured to analyze information from the detectors 20 and to display an image representative of the contents of the luggage case 14 . In this image, the materials cont...

Abstract

The invention relates to the field of materials analysis by ionising radiation, in particular x-radiation or gamma radiation. The invention proposes a method for determining physical properties of a test sample (14) using a spectrometric detector (20) with at least three channels, consisting of: performing measurements in each of the channels on the test sample, calculating variables, each formedfrom a combination of measurements of different channels, applying a weighting and bias matrix to the variables, enabling the investigated physical properties of the test sample to be determined.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to the field of material analysis by ionizing radiation, in particular by x-radiation or gamma radiation. Background technique [0002] The use of x-radiation or gamma radiation has been developed in the field of non-destructive testing and safety (eg detection of explosive materials). In the field of non-destructive testing, several applications have been used eg to determine the fat level in meat. [0003] For such applications, multi-energy measurements are performed. More specifically, the object to be analyzed is located between the polychromatic spectral source and the multi-energy detector. The multi-energy detector is for example a spectral detector or a scintillation detector associated with several filters defining different energy bands. [0004] For example, it is possible to measure the attenuation coefficient of incident radiation for each of the two energy bands from two energy bands. A reference material that e...
