Embodiment 1

[0114] Using the method described above, a hardened microtextured surface comprising cylindrical pillars with a diameter of about 100 μm, a height of about 150 μm, and a pillar spacing of about 250 μm was generated on a 30 mil PETg substrate using 3M CLINPRO sealant, as Figure 11 shown. The weight of the microtextured coating is 0.007g / cm 2 . A total of five PETg discs (2 cm diameter) were prepared per coating and each disc was stored in a plastic centrifuge tube (50 mL) with 25 mL of MilliQ water at 37°C. Aged centrifuge tubes, allowing their contents to stand upright in a 37°C oven. The experiment was performed over the course of one week, with data collection points after 1 day, 3 days, and 7 days. At each time point, a 5 mL aliquot from each centrifuge tube was mixed with 5 mL TISAB II to measure F ion (ppm) content using a calibrated ion selective electrode.

Abstract

A dental appliance is described, the dental appliance including a polymeric substrate with a plurality of cavities for receiving one or more teeth, an arrangement of engineered microstructures on the substrate wherein the engineered microstructures include a therapeutic agent. The microstructures may be three-dimensionally engineered on a polymeric film disposed on a major surface of the polymeric substrate, wherein the microstructures extend outwards from the surface. The microstructures also comprise a compound releasable from the three-dimensionally engineered microstructures over a predetermined patient wear time.

Description

Background technique [0001] Orthodontic treatment involves repositioning misaligned teeth and modifying the occlusal configuration to improve cosmetic appearance and dental function. Repositioning of the teeth is accomplished by applying controlled forces to the teeth over an extended period of time. [0002] In one example, for each treatment phase of orthodontic treatment, the teeth may be repositioned by placing dental appliances (often referred to as orthodontic aligners or orthodontic aligner trays) over the patient's teeth. The orthodontic alignment tray includes a polymer shell defining a plurality of cavities for receiving one or more teeth. Each cavity in the polymer shell is shaped to apply a force to one or more teeth to elastically and incrementally reposition selected teeth or groups of teeth in the upper or lower jaw. [0003] A series of orthodontic aligner trays are provided to be worn sequentially and alternately by the patient during each stage of orthodont...
