Abstract

The invention relates to a sensor apparatus (10) comprising: a sensor element (12); a cover lens (16) which protects the sensor element (12) from environmental influences; and a detection device (100) for identifying contamination (110) on the cover lens (16). The detection device comprises: an emitter (102) for emitting light; coupling-in means (104) for coupling light into the cover lens (16); decoupling means (106) for decoupling light out of the cover lens (16); and a detector (108). Furthermore, according to the invention, the emitter (102) and the coupling-in means (104) are designed and arranged in such a way that light is coupled into the cover lens (16) at a plurality of angles and, owing to total reflection inside the cover lens (16), is propagated as far as the decoupling means (106) and reaches the detector (108), wherein, if contamination (110) is present on the cover lens (16), the total reflection for light which was coupled in at an angle within a suppression range dependent on the refractive index of the contamination (110), is at least partially suppressed, and the detector (108) is designed to detect the suppression of the total reflection for this angle, and the detection device (100) is designed to infer the type of contamination (110) from the angles for which the total reflection has been suppressed.
