Problems solved by technology

[0009] However, autografts are not usually used because obtaining a graft usually requires a second surgical procedure with its associated risks and costs
In addition, autografts can also cause serious postoperative problems, most notably pain

Embodiment Construction

[0031] While the invention may be embodied in various forms, presently preferred embodiments are shown in the drawings and hereinafter described, it being understood that the disclosure is considered exemplary of the invention and is not intended to limit the invention to its Specific examples are described.

[0032] general reference Figure 1-13 , illustrates a tubular fastener 100 and method of use for securing a surgical fixture and removing bone marrow from a bone puncture. The tubular fastener includes a first end 10 including a drill point 14 , a tapered lead 16 , threads 12 and a pilot hole 18 . The second or distal end 20 includes a connector 22 , a shoulder 24 and a spacer 26 . The drill bit 14 is polygonal in shape with a center point 28 and a plurality of sharp edges 30 . Central point 28 allows insertion of the tubular fastener through tissue and bone without the need for a pilot hole. Once the center point 28 touches the bone, the position of the center point...

Abstract

The invention relates to a device and a method for obtaining a bone marrow aspirate. The device includes an elongate tubular fastener having a threaded end for attachment to bone. The threaded portion includes an orientation hole dimensioned to permit inhalation of bone marrow into the cannula. Orienting the hole also allows a user to guide the hole in a desired direction within the bone to obtain bone marrow. The distal end of the tubular fastener includes a connector, which may be in the form of a luer lock, to allow a vacuum to be applied to the cannula to draw bone marrow into the syringe or the like.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to surgical procedures requiring bone grafting; more particularly, to surgical fasteners and methods for securing surgical fixation devices and harvesting bone marrow aspirate. Background technique [0002] In the United States, bone grafting is most commonly used in spinal fusion surgery, and more generally in the fusion or arthrodesis of any bone joint to bridge gaps between bone segments and also to provide a three-dimensional scaffold on which the bone can grow. [0003] In addition, bone grafting can be used in trauma surgery for the treatment of fresh fractures and nonunion situations, where the bone has been fractured, or where the patient is at very high risk of developing a nonunion fracture. [0004] Joint reconstruction and revision surgery is another area where patients may require bone grafting because removal of the original joint or implant may result in a large void. [0005] There are different ...
