Abstract

An alkaline cell having an anode with a solid particle gelling agent centrally disposed therein for increasing concentration of zinc powder closer to the separator and cathode. The anode initially contains zinc powder, gelling agent and electrolyte solution. A dry solid gelling agent, preferably configured as a cylindrical rod, is disposed into a gel anode and allowed to absorb electrolyte solution, the rod thereby swelling in size to consume greater volume while concentrating the zinc powder toward the separator.

Background of the invention [0001] The present invention relates generally to electrochemical cells, and more particularly to improved anodes for alkaline cells in which large particles of gelling agent material are distributed within the anode. [0002] Traditional alkaline batteries usually use colloidal negative electrodes, generally called anodes, which contain carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), cross-linked branched polyacrylic acid or its sodium salt, natural gum, etc. as gelling agents. Colloidal anodes are usually formed by uniformly dispersing zinc powder in a colloidal electrolyte using CMC as a gelling agent. Generally, the colloidal anode initially retains a good colloidal state, however, as time goes by, the CMC usually undergoes gelation and the anode is no longer in a colloidal state. Also, high specific gravity zinc powder precipitates, reducing the effective surface area for zinc reactions. As a result, the discharge performance of the alkaline battery decreases...
