Problems solved by technology

The exact mechanism by which BPI kills Gram-negative bacteria has not been fully elucidated, but it is believed that BPI must first bind to the bacterial surface through electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions between cationic BPI proteins and negatively charged sites on LPS

Embodiment 1

[0043] This protocol, approved by the Institutional Review Board at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, was an open-label prospective study in which 30 children with severe congenital heart disease were sequentially enrolled, awaiting surgical repair and / or mitigation. One patient with hypoplastic left heart syndrome died during surgery, so data from this pediatric patient were included only in the preoperative analysis. Patients with clinical signs of infection prior to surgery were excluded from this study.

[0044] The 30 registered children ranged in age from 4 days to 402 days (average age 59 days) and weighed 2.0-9.5 kg (average weight 4.0 kg). Gender, age, cardiac diagnosis, and surgical repair are listed in Table 1 below.

Abstract

New therapeutic uses for BPI protein products that involve treatment of chronic cardiac disease.

Description

[0001] This application claims priority to US Provisional Application Serial No. 60 / 116,736, filed January 22, 1999, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference. [0002] The present invention generally relates to novel therapeutic uses of BPI protein products in the treatment of chronic heart disease including but not limited to chronic states such as congestive heart failure and cardiomyopathy. Background of the invention [0003] Chronic heart disease is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity in developed countries. One type of chronic heart disease is cardiomyopathy, which is actually a group of disorders characterized by myocardial dysfunction that is associated with heart disease such as coronary atherosclerosis, valvular dysfunction, and high blood pressure. The usual etiology of blood pressure was not relevant. Cardiomyopathy is classified hemodynamically into dilated, hypertrophic, restrictive, and occlusive cardiomyopathy and...
