Embodiment Construction

[0022] In the following description, unless otherwise noted, numerical data are expressed in 2's complement notation. In addition, in the figure, the clock delay is represented by a logic box containing a triangle and a multiplier factor "X", which represents the number of delay intervals. Delays are used to ensure proper alignment of the color difference signals (Cr and Cb) in multiplexed form. In addition, the binary arithmetic shift operation is represented by a logic box containing the symbols ">" representing a binary right shift. The shift sign is always followed by a number indicating the number of bits to shift. Shift operations as described above are used to perform division operations, or to prevent overflow during various numeric operations.

Abstract

Method and apparatus for automatically enhancing the foliage display of a color signal includes providing the color signal in multiplexed form having alternating first and second components, the first component being substantially aligned with a flesh tone color space axis, the second component being substantialy aligned with a green tone color space axis. A de-multiplexing unit separates the first and second components to provide a first de-multiplexed component substantially aligned with the flesh tone axis and a second de-multiplexed component substantially aligned with the green tone axis. A processing unit generates from the de-multiplexed components a green tone enhancement control signal for increasing green tone contrast of the color signal; and a modifying unit modifies the magnitude of the multiplexed color signal by applying the multiplexed color signal and the green tone enhancement control signal to a multiplier to provide a modified multiplexed output signal at an output having enhanced foliage contrast. In an examplary embodiment, the green enhancement control signal and a flesh tone enhancement control signal are applied to a common multiplier thereby advantageously providing both flesh tone and foliage enhancement with an absolute minimum of circuitry for the combined functions.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to automatic color correction of video signals, and more particularly to automatic enhancement of selected parameters of color video signals, such as hue and saturation. Background technique [0002] In general, automatic correction of color errors in the flesh tone of displayed images is known. An example of such a system is described, for example, in US Patent No. 3,996,608, issued December 7, 1976 to Harwood, entitled "HUE CORRECTION APPARATUS HAVING ARESTRICTED RANGE." In Harwood's device, the chrominance signal is dynamically monitored and the phase of the color subcarrier reference signal is automatically changed when the chrominance signal is within the range of the skin tone (+I) axis. The phase of the reference subcarrier is varied using a wide bandwidth phase detector by controllably adding a portion of the clipped chrominance signal to the subcarrier so as to shift the phase of the subc...
