Problems solved by technology

Adding cellulose to carrageenan is not only economically unfavorable, but it is also difficult to control the viscosity of the resulting mixture
Furthermore, the addition of cellulose to such coatings tends to hamper the overall dissolution rate of the coating, thereby delaying the release time of the active ingredients contained therein

Embodiment

[0060] 1. Analysis of film-forming properties of sucralose

[0061] A 10% aqueous solution of sucralose was prepared and poured into a 3 foot glass Petri dish so that the solution was about 2 mm deep in it. The solution was then dried in an oven at 70°C for about 6 hours. The resulting dried material adhered to the glass dish but could not be peeled off as a film. The material also crumbled when scratched. These results indicate that sucralose alone cannot form films with acceptable physical properties such as tensile strength, plasticity, hardness.

[0062] 2. Preparation of Sucralose-Carrageenan Solution

[0063] An impregnation solution having the components listed below was prepared as follows.

[0064] Dip solution composition:

[0065] Pure water 100g

[0066] Potassium chloride crystals 0.400g

[0067] k-carrageenan * 1.000g

[0068] Sucralose ** 10.00g

[0069] FD&C Red No.40 0.090g

[0070] Titanium dioxide 0.500g

[0071] * k-Carrageenan is "GP-911NF"...

[0123] Example 8) Surface Gloss Measurement of Coated Tablets

[0124] An instrument available under the trade designation "Tri-Cor Model 805A / 806H Surface Analysis System" from TriCor Systems Inc. (Elgin, IL) was used, and generally according to "TriCor Systems WGLOSS 3.4 Model 805A / 806H Surface Analysis System Reference Manual" (1996) The procedure described in (hereby incorporated by reference) tested the surface gloss of one tablet made in Example 4 and one other tablet made in Example 5.

[0125] The instrument uses a CCD photographic detector, uses a planar scattered light source, compares a reference standard with a tablet sample, and measures the average gloss value at an incident angle of 60 degrees. During this operation, the instrument produces a grayscale image in which the presence of brighter pixels indicates the presence of better gloss at that given location.

[0126] The instrument also uses software that quantifies gloss using a family approach, ie, pixels o...

Abstract

Water soluble, gelatin-free dip coatings for substrates comprising a hydrocolloid, such as carrageenan, and sucralose.

Description

[0001] Cross-references to related applications [0002] This application claims priority to US Application No. 60 / 325727 (MCP292), filed September 28, 2001, the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference. field of invention [0003] The present invention relates to novel water-soluble gelatin-free compositions for dip-coating substrates such as tablets and capsules and to methods of making such tablets and capsules. Background of the invention [0004] For most of this century, hard capsules were a common dosage form for prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medications. The ability to combine capsule portions of different colors gives manufacturers a unique way to differentiate various drugs. Many patients realize that capsules are easier to swallow and therefore prefer capsules to tablets. This consumer propensity has prompted drug manufacturers to market some products in capsule form, even when they are also available in tablet form. [0005] Typi...
