Embodiment Construction

[0025] According to the present invention, a long, continuous acquisition record of a data signal is captured and stored, comprising each bit in the data signal during a predetermined length of time corresponding to up to a million bits or more. As described below, this long, continuous data signal is acquired and stored for processing and subsequent retrieval of each bit in the signal.

[0026] clock recovery

[0027] first reference figure 1 , which shows a flow diagram illustrating a method for analyzing an acquired and stored waveform and generating a recovered elementary virtual period clock associated with the stored waveform. In step 110, the acquired, stored data signal is retrieved from memory. Then, at step 115, an absolute or relative (percentage of the amplitude of the recorded waveform) threshold is defined in order to analyze the threshold crossed data signal for subsequent definition of a series of "samples" taken at approximately the same sampling interval. ...

Abstract

A method and apparatus for processing a data signal is provided. The apparatus comprises an acquisition unit (715, 720 and 725) of a test instrument for acquiring a data signal for a predetermined time, a memory (730) of the test instrument for storing the data signal, and a clock recovery unit (740) for recovering a clock signal from the stored data signal. A processor slices the stored data signal into a plurality of data segments of a predetermined length in accordance with the recovered clock signal.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims the benefit of US Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 60 / 415,236, filed September 30, 2002, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. technical field [0003] The invention relates to a method of acquiring and processing received data signals for analysis in a digital oscilloscope. Background of the invention [0004] Traditionally, when waveforms processed by a test device, such as an oscilloscope, are received, these waveforms are acquired as many discrete acquisitions, with the timing of the start and / or end of each acquisition defined in terms of a trigger signal. The trigger signal is generally not synchronized with the sampling process, and is generated according to an external signal, clock or frame synchronization signal. The time difference between the trigger instant and the sampling process is measured, thereby assigning each acquired sample of the waveform to ...
