An imaging device capable of restricting usage of a hard disk drive and a method of restricting usage of a hard disk drive of the imaging device. The image forming apparatus includes an interface unit for detecting whether a hard disk drive is installed, and a control unit for executing a verification procedure for the installed hard disk drive, and based on a result of the verification procedure, for controlling whether data stored in the installed hard disk drive is Printable by imaging devices. Thus, during the verification procedure, if the specification information of the hard disk drive does not match the stored reference specification information, the hard disk drive is not allowed to be used even if it is taken maliciously.
