Problems solved by technology

[0029] However, the Saar patent is not a panacea
In fact, the Saar patent states that "in some cases, inflection point technology suitable for normal conditions may not be sufficient, for example, if the battery is damaged or defective, or if the user neglects to charge a fully charged battery"

Embodiment Construction

[0043] The present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein like numerals denote like parts. The method view of the Saar patent is incorporated herein by reference.

[0044] Common battery packs and chargers such as Figure 6 shown. In this figure, the battery pack 10 is connected to a charger 20 . The battery pack 10 may include a plurality of battery cells 11 connected in series and / or in parallel, which define the voltage and storage capacity of the battery pack 10 . The battery pack 10 may also include individual battery contacts: a first battery contact 12 , a second battery contact 13 and a third battery contact 14 . Battery contact 12 is the B+ (positive) terminal of battery pack 10 . Battery contact 14 is B- or negative / common. Battery contact 13 is the S or sense terminal. Battery contacts 12 and 14 receive charging current from charger 20 (preferably from current source 22, discussed below) to charge battery pack 10 ....

Abstract

The invnetion discloses a charging method and related charging equipment. The charging method includes the steps of charging a battery pack, sensing voltage of the battery pack, calculating voltage change rate, detecting a first inflection point based on the voltage change rate so long as a voltage step is not detected, detecting a second inflection point based on the voltage change rate so long as a voltage step is not detected, and reducing current sent to the battery pack when both first and second inflection points have been detected.

Description

[0001] This application is a divisional application of an invention patent application with an application date of February 28, 2003, an application number of 03106766.2, and an invention title of "battery charger and charging method". [0002] Comparison of related applications [0003] This application is derived from, and enjoys the benefit of priority from, US Patent Application No. 60 / 360,402 filed February 28, 2002, under 35 USC § 119(e), and co-pending. technical field [0004] The present invention generally relates to battery chargers and charging methods. Background technique [0005] Battery packs for portable power tools, outdoor tools, and certain kitchen and household appliances may contain rechargeable cells such as lithium, nickel-cadmium, nickel-metal hydride, and lead-acid batteries so that they can be recharged rather than replaced. Hence great cost savings. [0006] But users still face many problems. Often, users find that the batteries self-discharge...
