Method (100) for controlling a powertrain (3), wherein the powertrain (3) comprises an internal combustion engine (1) and a transmission (5), and wherein the method (100) comprises the steps of: - Control (110) of a torque output of the internal combustion engine (1) depending on a torque requirement up to a maximum torque output limit (tm) during continuous operation of the internal combustion engine (1), - Changing (120) a gear ratio of the transmission (5), and - Control (130) the torque output of the internal combustion engine (1) to selectively exceed the maximum torque output limit (tm) during the step of changing (120) the gear ratio of the transmission (5) if the torque requirement before the step of changing (120) the gear ratio of the transmission (5) is above a predetermined threshold (tl).
