The nitrocellulose-free nail polish composition is intended to exhibit comparable or better adhesion properties than nitrocellulose-containing nail polish compositions. EP 2 248 514 A2 does not use any surface-modified effect pigments as colorants.

[0014] The object of the present invention is to provide an effect pigment for use in a nail polish composition which significantly determines the optical appearance of the nail polish composition after application and drying.

[0015] In the case of high-quality metallic effect pigments, a mirror finish, and preferably a particularly high mirror finish, should be achieved.

[0016] In particular, a further object of the present invention is to provide a nail polish composition that enables a good leafing effect of surface-modified effect pigments. The object of the invention is achieved by providing a surface-modified effect pigment comprising a metallic platelet-shaped substrate optionally coated with at least one metal oxide, metal hydroxide and / or metal oxide hydrate, wherein the metallic platelet-shaped substrate is produced by PVD processes and has a mean thickness h 50 from a range of 13 nm to 60 nm and is used as a starting material (additive) for surface modification i) cetyl phosphoric acid ester or cetylphosphoric acid from a range of 10 wt.% to 50 wt.% and the aluminum effect pigment has a D 50 value from a range of 2.5 µm to 90 µm.

[0017] The object of the invention is further achieved by a method for producing the surface-modified effect pigment according to claim 5.

[0018] Furthermore, the object of the underlying invention is solved by the use of a surface-modified effect pigment according to claim 1 or 2 in nail polishes.

[0019] The surface-modified effect pigments according to claim 1 may comprise a metallic platelet-shaped substrate optionally coated with at least one metal oxide, metal hydroxide and / or metal oxide hydrate, or a non-metallic platelet-shaped substrate optionally coated with at least one metal oxide, metal hydroxide and / or metal oxide hydrate.

[0020] The metallic plate-shaped substrates are produced using PVD processes.

[0021] The aforementioned metallic plate-shaped substrates can also comprise one or more layers of or containing at least one high- and / or low-refractive-index metal oxide, metal hydroxide, and / or metal oxide hydrate, and can optionally be dried and / or optionally calcined. Thus, commercially available coated metallic effect pigments can also be used as metallic plate-shaped substrates. According to a preferred embodiment, the metallic plate-shaped substrates to be used according to the invention are uncoated.

[0022] According to the invention, the metallic plate-shaped substrates are aluminum PVD pigments.

[0023] These preferably have a mean thickness h 50 from a range of 13 nm to 60 nm and particularly preferably from a range of 20 nm to 40 nm.

[0024] Below 13 nm, the metallic PVD pigments, especially aluminum pigments, become too dark and too transparent.

[0025] Above 80 nm, the optical properties and opacity decrease considerably, and a mirror finish is difficult to achieve.

[0026] When metallic effect pigments are used in cosmetic formulations, they must meet certain purity requirements, such as EU Cosmetic Regulation 1223 / 2009 or FDA 21CFR part 73.

[0027] For example, if aluminum plates are used as a metallic plate-shaped substrate, these preferably have an aluminum content of ≥ 97 wt.%, more preferably ≥ 98 wt.%, particularly preferably ≥ 99 wt.% and most preferably ≥ 99.7 wt.%, in each case based on the total weight of the aluminum plate. In a preferred embodiment, the aluminium platelets further have a mercury content of preferably ≤ 1 ppm, an arsenic content of preferably ≤ 2 ppm, a lead content of preferably ≤ 10 ppm, a cadmium content of preferably ≤ 1 ppm, a barium content of preferably ≤ 10 ppm, a chromium content of preferably ≤ 20 ppm, a nickel content of preferably ≤ 20 ppm, a copper content of preferably ≤ 20 ppm, a cobalt content of preferably ≤ 20 ppm, an antimony content of preferably ≤ 2 ppm, a selenium content of preferably ≤ 10 ppm and a zinc content of preferably ≤ 20 ppm.

[0028] In a preferred embodiment, the surface-modified effect pigments to be used in the nail polish composition according to the invention comprise aluminum platelets produced by PVD processes as a metallic platelet-shaped substrate or metal effect pigments according to the main claim of WO 2010 / 086165 A1, such as METALURE A41010 AE, METALURE A41506 EN, METALURE A 41510 EN, METALURE A31017 AE, METALURE A31010 BG, METALURE A31010 AE, METALURE A21010 AE, METALURE L55350AE, METALURE L63418, METALURE L 55700, METALURE A 61010 BG, METALURE A61010 AE, METALURE A61006 AE, METALURE A61006 BG, METALURE A41010 BG or METALURE L71011AE, all from ECKART GmbH.

[0029] According to the invention, the mean thickness h 50 is understood to be the median value of the cumulative distribution curve of the thickness distribution, unless otherwise specified.

[0030] The determination of h 50 was preferably carried out according to the method described in WO 2004 / 087816 A2 (pages 24 and 25) using SEM.

[0031] The h50 value of the cumulative frequency distribution of the thickness distribution function, as preferably obtained by counting in the SEM, indicates that 50% of the measured surface-modified effect pigments have a thickness equal to or less than the respective specified value.

[0032] In further preferred embodiments, wet-ground aluminum platelets with a thickness distribution Δh = (h 90 - h 10 ) / h 50 from a range of 30 to 140%, preferably from a range of 30 to 70%, and most preferably from a range of 30 to 50%, are used as the metallic platelet-shaped substrate. The production of such metallic effect pigments is described in WO 2004 / 087816 A2 or WO 2008 / 077612 A2, which are hereby incorporated by reference.

[0033] In a further embodiment, the relative standard deviation of the thickness distribution of the metallic plate-shaped substrates is 11% to 98%, preferably 22% to 78%, particularly preferably 28% to 68%, and most preferably 34% to 64%. The relative standard deviation in [%] is the quotient of the calculated standard deviation of the thickness distribution and the mean thickness h₅₀.

[0034] The surface-modified effect pigments according to the invention, preferably for use in a nail polish composition, based on metallic, uncoated, platelet-shaped substrates, can optionally comprise at least one layer of or containing at least one metal oxide, metal hydroxide, and / or metal oxide hydrate, wherein the metal ion is selected from the group of metals consisting of Al, Si, Sn, Zn, Ti, and Fe, preferably selected from the group of metals consisting of Al and Si. The aforementioned metal oxides, metal hydroxides, and / or metal oxide hydrates can be present as (i) separate layers, (ii) mixed metal oxide, mixed metal hydroxide, and / or mixed metal oxide hydrate, or (iii) in separate layers on the metallic platelet-shaped substrate.

[0035] The surface-modified effect pigments according to the invention, preferably for use in a nail polish composition, based on metallic platelet-shaped substrates, can have any average particle size D 50. The D 50 values of the surface-modified effect pigments according to the invention, preferably for use in a nail polish composition, based on metallic platelet-shaped substrates, are preferably in the range of 2 µm to 150 µm, more preferably in the range of 2.5 µm to 170 µm, more preferably in the range of 3 µm to 140 µm, particularly preferably in the range of 3.5 µm to 90 µm, and most preferably in the range of 3.8 µm to 56 µm.The surface-modified effect pigments according to the invention, preferably for use in a nail polish composition, based on metallic platelet-shaped substrates, most preferably have a D50 value in the range of 2.5 µm to 14 µm or in the range of 15 µm to 35 µm. Below 2 µm, the gloss values decrease significantly, and above 150 µm, a uniformly closed metallic surface is not obtained.

[0036] The D10 values of the surface-modified effect pigments according to the invention, preferably for use in a nail polish composition, based on metallic platelet-shaped substrates, are preferably in the range of 1 µm to 60 µm, more preferably in the range of 2 µm to 40 µm, particularly preferably in the range of 4 µm to 31 µm, and most preferably in the range of 5 µm to 19 µm. Below 1 µm, the gloss values decrease significantly, and above 60 µm, a uniformly closed metallic surface is not obtained.

[0037] The D90 values of the surface-modified effect pigments according to the invention, preferably for use in a nail polish composition, based on metallic platelet-shaped substrates, are preferably in the range of 10 µm to 600 µm, more preferably in the range of 30 µm to 200 µm, particularly preferably in the range of 40 µm to 150 µm, and most preferably in the range of 45 µm to 120 µm. Below 10 µm, the gloss values decrease significantly, and above 600 µm, a uniformly closed metallic surface is not obtained.

[0038] In one embodiment, the surface-modified effect pigments according to the invention, preferably to be used in a nail polish composition, based on metallic platelet-shaped substrates, have a span ΔD, defined as Δ D = D 90 − D 10 D 50 , from a range of 0.7 to 2.5, preferably from a range of 0.8 to 2.2, more preferably from a range of 0.9 to 1.9, particularly preferably from a range of 0.9 to 1.8 and most preferably from a range of 1 to 1.7.

[0039] In a further embodiment, the surface-modified effect pigments according to the invention, preferably for use in a nail polish composition, based on metallic platelet-shaped substrates, have an aspect ratio defined as the quotient of D 50 and mean thickness, preferably in a range of 10 to 2000, more preferably in a range of 30 to 1200, particularly preferably in a range of 100 to 1100, and most preferably in a range of 200 to 1000. Below the lower limits, the optical properties of the metallic effect pigments are not yet sufficient to achieve a mirror finish, and above 2000, the metallic effect pigments are very difficult to produce.

[0040] In a further embodiment, the surface-modified effect pigments according to the invention, preferably for use in a nail polish composition, based on metallic platelet-shaped substrates, preferably have a mean total thickness h 50 from a range of 20 nm to 4000 nm, more preferably from a range of 30 nm to 3000 nm, particularly preferably from a range of 70 nm to 2000 nm, and most preferably from a range of 230 nm to 1300 nm. Mean total thickness is understood to mean the total mean thickness of the surface-modified effect pigment, i.e., metallic platelet-shaped substrate plus optional coating plus surface modification.

[0041] According to the invention, the surface-modified effect pigments, preferably used in a nail polish composition, comprise metal platelets produced by a PVD process as a metallic, plate-shaped substrate. These platelets have a D50 value in the range of 2.5 µm to 90 µm, more preferably in the range of 8 µm to 25 µm, and an average thickness in the range of 13 nm to 60 nm. In this embodiment, the aluminum platelets are preferably not coated. The natural oxide layer present on the aluminum platelets is not considered an applied coating.

[0042] Surprisingly, mirror-like gloss effects can also be achieved with very small PVD pigments. These pigments can be produced, for example, by further grinding ordinary PVD pigments or by ultrasonic treatment. According to the invention, these metal platelets are aluminum platelets. These aluminum PVD pigments preferably have a D50 value in the range of 6 µm to 18 µm and an average thickness in the range of 14 nm to 40 nm. Aluminum PVD pigments with a D50 value in the range of 7 µm to 16 µm and an average thickness in the range of 15 nm to 35 nm are particularly preferred.

[0043] The D10, D50, and D90 values of the cumulative frequency distribution of the volume-averaged size distribution function, as obtained by laser diffraction methods, indicate that 10%, 50%, and 90%, respectively, of the measured surface-modified effect pigments have a volume-averaged diameter equal to or less than the specified value. The size distribution curve of the surface-modified effect pigments according to the invention, preferably for use in a nail polish composition, as well as the surface-modified effect pigments according to claim 1, each based on non-metallic platelet-shaped substrates, is determined using the Mastersizer 2000 instrument from Malvern, according to the manufacturer's instructions. The evaluation of the scattered light signals is carried out according to Fraunhofer theory, which also includes the refractive and absorption behavior of the particles. The size distribution curve of the surface-modified effect pigments according to the invention, preferably for use in a nail polish composition, as well as the surface-modified effect pigments according to claim 1, each based on metallic platelet-shaped substrates, is determined using the Cilas 1064 instrument from Quantachrome or the Horiba LA-930 instrument from Horiba. The evaluation of the scattered light signals is carried out according to Fraunhofer theory, which also includes the refractive and absorption behavior of the particles.

[0044] It has been shown that the surface-modified effect pigments according to the invention do not produce good results in all nail polish systems, such as those disclosed in EP 1796794 B2. The leafing effect is frequently lost during or after application, and consequently, the optical properties of the effect pigments are not fully realized.

[0045] Therefore, an essential component of the present invention is the provision of a nail polish in which the leafing properties of the surface-modified effect pigments are very effectively utilized.

[0046] The invention therefore also relates to a nail polish composition containing a) at least one effect pigment surface-modified with a starting material (additive), wherein the effect pigment comprises a platelet-shaped substrate and optionally at least one coating applied to the substrate; b) at least one hydrocarbon-containing resin; and c) at least one solvent or solvent mixture. wherein at least one compound from the group consisting of compounds or mixtures containing phosphoric acid esters, phosphoric acid esters, phosphoric acid, fatty acids and / or silanes is taken as the starting material (additive) for surface modification of the effect pigment.

[0047] The phosphoric acid esters and / or phosphoric acids that can be used for surface modification may be phosphoric acid esters of the general formula (RO) n -P(O)(OR')(OR") m, where the substituents R, R' and R" preferably have the following meaning: R = linear and / or branched alkyl group with a carbon chain from the range of C10 to C20 and R' = R" = H, linear and / or branched alkyl group with a carbon chain from the range of C1 to C6, preferably C1 to C3, wherein R' and R" can be identical or different from each other and wherein n = 1 or 2 and m = n - 1 and n + m = 2. Here, with respect to the number n, both pure forms of the monoesters (n = 1) or diesters (n = 2) and mixtures thereof are possible.

[0048] In a particularly preferred embodiment, primary phosphoric acids or phosphonic acids with R = linear, unsubstituted alkyl group with a carbon chain from the range of C 12 to C 18, preferably from the range of C 14 to C 18, and R' = R" = H, are used for surface modification of the effect pigments to be used in a nail polish composition according to the invention. A further preferred option is n = 1 (monoester).

[0049] A preferred phosphonic acid is laurylphosphonic acid and preferred phosphoric acids are cetyl phosphate or stearyl phosphate.

[0050] For surface modification, for example 2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid esters (CAS: 12645-31-7), lauryl phosphoric acid esters (CAS: 12751-23-4), cetyl phosphoric acid esters (CAS: 3539-43-3), stearyl phosphoric acid esters (CAS: 39471-52-8) and / or monoethylmono-(9Z)-9-octadecenyl phosphoric acid esters (CAS: 10483-96-2) can be used.

[0051] Particularly preferred are cetyl phosphoric acid esters, stearyl phosphoric acid esters or lauryl phosphoric acid esters, and especially preferred are cetyl phosphoric acid esters or stearyl phosphoric acid esters, and most particularly preferred are cetyl phosphoric acid esters.

[0052] To produce the surface-modified effect pigments according to the invention, which are preferably to be used in a nail polish composition, the starting material (additive) for surface modification is preferably used in an amount from a range of 1.5 wt.% to 50 wt.%, particularly preferably from a range of 3.2 wt.% to 40 wt.% and most preferably from a range of 4.8 wt.% to 23 wt.%, in each case based on the total weight of the effect pigment used.

[0053] Since the quantities of additive specified here refer to the starting material, the actual amount of additive in the finished coated effect pigment may be lower, as, for example, at a quantity of 50 wt%, not all of the additive can be absorbed onto the pigment surface. Accordingly, lower quantities of the leafing additives may also be found in applications containing the pigments, particularly in nail polishes.

[0054] The relatively high amounts of additive in the starting material result in a very high and dense coating of the effect pigment surface with the additive.

[0055] In particularly preferred embodiments, at least one phosphoric acid ester and / or at least one phosphoric acid of the formula (RO) n -P(O)(OR')(OR") m , wherein R is a linear alkyl group with a carbon chain from a range of C 14 to C 18 , and wherein R' and R" are independently H, CH 3 , C 2 H 5 or C 3 H 8 and wherein n = 1 or 2 and m = n - 1 and n + m = 2 , in a total amount from a range of 14 wt.% to 40 wt.%, based on the total weight of the effect pigment used, is used as a starting material (additive) for the surface modification of effect pigments based on metallic platelet-shaped substrates produced by PVD processes with a mean substrate thickness h 50 from a range of 15 nm to 40 nm, preferably 20 to 40 nm. It is further preferred that R' = R" = H. It is also particularly preferred that n = 1.

[0056] According to the invention, "total quantity" means the complete quantity of starting material (additive), regardless of whether it is exclusively at least one phosphoric acid ester, exclusively at least one phosphonic acid ester, a mixture of at least one phosphoric acid ester and at least one phosphonic acid ester, a mixture of different phosphonic acids, a mixture of different fatty acids, or a mixture of different silanes.

[0057] The surface-modified effect pigments according to claim 1 can be used in cosmetic formulations, particularly in nail polish compositions. The surface-modified effect pigments according to claim 1 are characterized, particularly in nail polish compositions, by their excellent leafing behavior. Inventive nail polish composition:

[0058] The invention further relates to a nail polish composition that enables and maintains the leafing effect of the effect pigments in an excellent manner.

[0059] This nail polish composition according to the invention contains: a) at least one effect pigment surface-modified with a starting material (additive), wherein the effect pigment comprises a platelet-shaped substrate and optionally at least one coating applied to the substrate; b) at least one hydrocarbon resin as a binder; and c) at least one solvent or solvent mixture. wherein at least one compound from the group consisting of compounds or mixtures containing phosphoric acid esters, phosphoric acid esters, phosphoric acid, fatty acids and / or silanes is taken as the starting material (additive) for surface modification of the effect pigment.

[0060] The nail polish composition according to the invention, which comprises at least one surface-modified effect pigment, preferably does not contain nitrocellulose, unlike most commercially available nail polish compositions. The optical appearance of the nail polish composition according to the invention, after application and drying, is largely determined by the at least one surface-modified effect pigment.

[0061] The nail polish composition according to the invention comprises the at least one surface-modified effect pigment preferably in a proportion from a range of 0.3 wt.% to 8.5 wt.%, more preferably from a range of 0.5 wt.% to 5.0 wt.%, particularly preferably from a range of 0.6 wt.% to 3.0 wt.% and most preferably from a range of 0.8 wt.% to 1.9 wt.%, in each case based on the total weight of the nail polish composition.

[0062] In a particularly preferred embodiment, the nail polish composition according to the invention comprises at least one surface-modified, optionally coated, aluminum pigment, wherein the surface-modified aluminum pigment has a D50 value in the range of 5 µm to 100 µm, preferably in the range of 2 µm to 60 µm, and the mean thickness of the aluminum platelet is in the range of 10 nm to 100 nm, preferably in the range of 20 nm to 40 nm. In this embodiment, at least one phosphoric acid ester ROP(O)(OR')(OR") is preferably used as the starting material (additive) for the surface modification of the optionally coated aluminum pigment, with R = linear alkyl group with a carbon chain in the range of C14 to C18, R' = R" = H in a proportion in the range of 10 wt.% to 50 wt.%, based on the total weight of the effect pigment used. The nail polish composition according to the invention comprises the surface-modified, optionally coated, aluminum pigment described above, preferably in a proportion from a range of 0.6 wt.% to 3.0 wt.%, particularly preferably from a range of 0.8 wt.% to 1.9 wt.%, in each case based on the total weight of the nail polish composition.

[0063] Below the amounts of the specific substances to be used as starting material (additive) for surface modification in the surface-modified effect pigments according to claim 1 or in the various effect pigment / additive combinations described above, as specified for different effect pigment types, sufficient leafing of the effect pigments does not occur. Above the specified amounts of additives, excessive amounts of the additives may be introduced into the finished nail polish composition.

[0064] It is particularly preferred that the effect pigments are coated with the additive in a separate step before being incorporated into the nail polish system.

[0065] A preferred method for producing the surface-modified effect pigments according to the invention therefore comprises the following steps: i. Suspending the metallic platelet-shaped substrate, optionally coated with at least one metal oxide, metal hydroxide and / or metal oxide hydrate, or the non-metallic platelet-shaped substrate, optionally coated with at least one metal oxide, metal hydroxide and / or metal oxide hydrate, in at least one solvent; ii. Adding the phosphoric acid cetyl ester or the phosphoric acid stearyl ester at optionally elevated temperature to the suspension from step i. and stirring the suspension now obtained; iii. Filtering, optionally drying, the surface-modified effect pigment obtained according to step ii.

[0066] A solvent compatible with the nail polish according to the invention is preferably used. Butyl acetate is particularly preferred.

[0067] For PVD metal pigments or for particularly thin metal pigments produced by wet milling, the drying step according to iii. will be omitted and instead these pigments will be left in a dispersion.

[0068] Some of the additives used will not adhere to the surface of the effect pigment because the surface is already saturated. However, for high and uniform coverage, it is important to provide sufficient quantities of additive, as only then can a strong leafing effect be expected.

[0069] In the nail polish compositions according to the invention, the surface-modified effect pigments preferably arrange themselves on the surface of the clear coat, i.e., in the nail polish composition according to the invention without surface-modified effect pigments. "Arrange themselves on the surface" according to the invention means that the surface-modified effect pigments are located on the nail polish base and / or, starting from the interface between the nail polish composition and air or between the nail polish composition and the topcoat, in the third of the nail polish composition adjacent to this interface, in the direction of the painted substrate. Preferably, the surface-modified effect pigments float in the clear coat and align themselves with the surface of the clear coat. The surface-modified effect pigments in the nail polish composition according to the invention are thus characterized by a pronounced leafing behavior.

[0070] Due to the pronounced leafing behavior of the surface-modified effect pigments, nail polish compositions can be produced according to the invention, which owe their optical appearance primarily to the at least one surface-modified effect pigment added to the nail polish base. Depending on the at least one surface-modified effect pigment, nail polish compositions can thus be easily obtained which, after application and drying, are characterized by their metallic character, their pearlescent shimmer, their interference color, a color change at different viewing angles, intense glitter effects, and / or a satin-matte appearance, to name just a few achievable effects.Naturally, various surface-modified effect pigments can be added to the nail polish composition, depending on the desired visual effect. Both the surface modification and the effect pigments themselves can differ from one another. "Different effect pigments" also includes effect pigments that are identical in type, such as aluminum pigments, but differ, for example, in their particle size.

[0071] A special feature of using surface-modified effect pigments based on aluminum platelets or on non-metallic platelet-shaped substrates coated with metallic silver is that, after application and drying, nail polish compositions with a mirror-like shine can be obtained. Ideally, after application and drying, the nail polish compositions according to the invention exhibit such high image sharpness that a viewer can almost see their own reflection in them.

[0072] According to the invention, "mirror gloss" means that the nail polish composition, after application to glass plates using a box squeegee (Erichsen System Wasag Model 288 film applicator, Erichsen) to a wet film thickness of 110 µm and subsequent drying at room temperature, exhibits at least 120 gloss units, measured at a 20° angle (Byk-Gardner, Digital Catalog "Quality Control for Paints and Plastics", page 16), and at least 1100 haze units (Hlog). According to the invention, an excellent mirror gloss is defined as achieving at least 150 gloss units, measured at a 20° angle (Byk-Gardner, Digital Catalog "Quality Control for Paints and Plastics", page 16), and at least 1100 haze units (Hlog). The gloss and haze units (Hlog) are preferably determined using the haze-gloss measuring device, Byk-Gardner.If the nail polish applications according to the invention have microscopically small structures, light is scattered at these structures near the angle of reflection, which reduces the image sharpness of the nail polish applications. Gloss (20° geometry) and haze are preferably not considered independently of each other when assessing the mirror-like gloss. The higher the numerical value of the gloss units for the 20° geometry, the lower the numerical value of the haze units (Hlog) can be, and conversely, the higher the numerical value of the haze units (Hlog), the lower the numerical value of the gloss units for the 20° geometry can be and still be perceived as a mirror-like gloss by the human eye. The higher the numerical value of the gloss units for the 20° geometry and the higher the numerical value of the haze units (Hlog), the higher the visually perceived image sharpness of the nail polish application.

[0073] In a highly preferred embodiment, the nail polish compositions according to the invention, after application to glass plates using a box squeegee (film applicator Erichsen System Wasag Model 288, Erichsen GmbH) in a wet film thickness of 110 µm and subsequent drying at room temperature, exhibit at least 200 gloss units, preferably at least 300 gloss units, particularly preferably at least 400 gloss units, and most preferably at least 450 to 1500 gloss units, in each case measured at the 20° geometry, and at least 1200 haze units (Hlog), preferably at least 1300 haze units (Hlog), particularly preferably at least 1400 haze units (Hlog), and most preferably at least 1410 to 2000 haze units (Hlog). In this embodiment as well, a higher number of haze units (Hlog) is preferred when the number of gloss units is lower, measured at the 20° geometry.

[0074] In a preferred embodiment, the nail polish compositions according to the invention, which are characterized by an excellent mirror gloss after application and drying, comprise 0.4 wt.% to 2.7 wt.%, preferably 0.5 wt.% to 1.8 wt.%, in each case based on the total weight of the nail polish composition, surface-modified effect pigments based on aluminum platelets, wherein the aluminum platelets have a D 50 value from a range of 2 µm to 500 µm, preferably from a range of 2.5 µm to 90 µm, and an average thickness from a range of 15 nm to 1000 nm, preferably from a range of 18 nm to 60 nm.

[0075] In a particularly preferred embodiment, the nail polish compositions according to the invention, which are characterized by an excellent mirror gloss after application, comprise 0.6 wt.% to 4.9 wt.%, preferably 0.3 wt.% to 3.8 wt.%, in each case based on the total weight of the nail polish composition, surface-modified effect pigments based on aluminum platelets, wherein the aluminum platelets have a D 50 value from a range of 5 µm to 150 µm, preferably from a range of 10 µm to 60 µm, and an average thickness from a range of 10 nm to 600 nm, preferably from a range of 20 nm to 100 nm.

[0076] In a preferred embodiment, the nail polish compositions according to the invention, after application on a glass plate using a box squeegee (film applicator Erichsen System Wasag Model 288, Erichsen company) in a wet film thickness of 100 µm and subsequent drying at room temperature, exhibit at least 200 gloss units, measured at the 20° geometry, and at least 1200 haze units (Hlog).

[0077] In a preferred embodiment, the nail polish composition according to the invention comprises at least one surface-modified effect pigment in a

[0078] A proportion from a range of 0.1 wt.% to 8.4 wt.%, preferably in a proportion from a range of 0.15 wt.% to 6.9 wt.%, particularly preferably in a proportion from a range of 0.2 wt.% to 4.3 wt.%, in each case based on the total weight of the nail polish composition, comprising at least one hydrocarbon-containing resin and at least one solvent.

[0079] In a further preferred embodiment, the nail polish composition according to the invention comprises at least one surface-modified effect pigment based on a metallic platelet-shaped substrate, wherein the effect pigment has a mean particle size D 50 from a range of 2 µm to 60 µm and a mean total thickness from a range of 10 nm to 150 nm. Binder:

[0080] The nail polish compositions according to the invention comprise at least one hydrocarbon resin as a binder, wherein the binder preferably has a binder solids content of 25 wt.% to 64 wt.%, more preferably of 25 wt.% to 60 wt.%, more preferably of 28 wt.% to 55 wt.%, particularly preferably of 29 wt.% to 50 wt.% and most particularly preferably of 35 wt.% to 43 wt.%, in each case based on the total weight of the nail polish composition.

[0081] Below a binder content of 25 wt%, no good optical effects from the effect pigments in the applied nail polish could be observed.

[0082] Above 60 wt.% the optical quality of the effect pigments also decreases and the viscosity of the nail polish compositions according to the invention becomes increasingly too high.

[0083] The nail polish compositions according to the invention preferably comprise hydrocarbon resins as binders, with a mean molecular weight (Mw) in the range of 800 to 6000, preferably in the range of 900 to 5000, or in the range of 8000 to 10000, preferably in the range of 8500 to 9300. The mean molecular weight Mw was determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) with a polystyrene standard.

[0084] Hydrocarbon resins are synthetic resins formed by the reaction of hydrocarbons (excluding olefins) with themselves in the presence of aluminum chloride or sulfuric acid as a catalyst. Hydrocarbon resins are classified according to their structure into petroleum resins, terpene resins, and coumaron-indene resins. Xylene-formaldehyde resins, the reaction products of xylene and formaldehyde, are also considered hydrocarbon resins.

[0085] The hydrocarbon resins are produced in a known manner by heating high-boiling fractions of gasoline pyrolysis (pyrolysis oil) or the isoprene-free C5 fraction of gasoline pyrolysis in the presence of aluminum chloride. The hydrocarbon resins are soluble in most organic solvents, e.g., esters, ethers, chlorinated hydrocarbons, and aromatics.

[0086] Without being bound to any specific theory, the inventors hypothesize that when using polar binders, the effect pigments coated with suitable additives are still partially wetted by the binder and therefore do not exhibit the desired leafing effect. In contrast, the resins of the nail polish composition according to the invention are very non-polar and consequently do not wet the effect pigments. This allows the effect pigments to develop the leafing effect more effectively.

[0087] In preferred embodiments, nail polish compositions containing aromatic hydrocarbon resins are used.

[0088] The nail polish compositions according to the invention can include hydrocarbon resins as binders, such as Kristalex F100 Hydrocarbon Resin, Kristalex 5140 Hydrocarbon Resin, Kristalex 3070 Hydrocarbon Resin, Kristalex 3085 Hydrocarbon Resin, Kristalex F115 Hydrocarbon Resin, each from Eastman.

[0089] Preferably, the nail polish compositions according to the invention comprise the hydrocarbon resins Kristalex F100 Hydrocarbon Resin and Kristalex 5140 Hydrocarbon Resin as binders.

[0090] In particularly preferred embodiments, the nail polish composition according to the invention contains hydrocarbon-containing resin in an amount that constitutes 80 to 100 wt.%, more preferably 90 to 99 wt.% of the total organic binder.

[0091] The use of hydrocarbon resins as the main binder in nail polishes is, to the inventors' knowledge, uncommon. Hydrocarbon resins are usually very rarely used in nail polishes, and when they are, they are combined with other binders in relatively small proportions.

[0092] In a particularly preferred embodiment, the nail polish compositions according to the invention comprise at least two different hydrocarbon resins with a first mean molecular weight MW of 1200 to 1600 g / mol and a second mean molecular weight MW of 4500 to 5500 g / mol in a weight ratio of 1:1 to 1:10, preferably 1:1 to 1:8, particularly preferably 1:1 to 1:4 and most preferably 1:1 to 1:2 of the two different hydrocarbon resins.

[0093] In further embodiments, the nail polish composition contains no or virtually no additional binders from the group consisting of nitrocellulose, polyester resins, polyvinyl resins, alkyd resins, epoxy resins, or cellulose acetate butyrate. These binders are preferably present in proportions of less than 10% by weight, more preferably less than 5% by weight, and particularly preferably less than 1% by weight, and most preferably less than 0.1% by weight, in each case based on the total weight of the hydrocarbon resins and additional binders. These binders have proven to be rather detrimental to achieving a truly strong mirror effect.

[0094] Without being bound to any theory, the inventors suspect that in nail polish compositions containing the aforementioned binders, these binders, due to their stronger polarity, at least partially wet the effect pigments, resulting in poorer leafing properties. Solvents:

[0095] The nail polish compositions according to the invention preferably contain certain solvents. Ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, and isopropanol can be added as solvents to the nail polish compositions according to the invention.

[0096] Preferably, the nail polish composition according to the invention contains a mixture of isopropanol, ethyl acetate and butyl acetate as a solvent.

[0097] Particularly preferably, the nail polish composition according to the invention contains the solvent mixture of isopropanol, ethyl acetate and butyl acetate in an amount of 70 to 100 wt.%, more preferably 75 to 98 wt.%, based on the total solvent of the nail polish composition.

[0098] It is irrelevant whether these preferred solvents are introduced via the binders or the effect pigment dispersion.

[0099] In further preferred embodiments, the ratio of butyl acetate to the solvent mixture is 50 to 99 wt.% and particularly preferably 55 to 98.5 wt.%.

[0100] In a further particularly preferred embodiment, the proportion of isopropanol is less than 20 wt.%, preferably less than 15 wt.%, and more preferably less than 10 wt.%, in each case based on the total solvent.

[0101] Excessive amounts of isopropanol in the nail polish composition according to the invention lead to a poor optical appearance of the effect pigments. This is probably due to the nail polish drying too quickly after application.

[0102] In a further particularly preferred embodiment, the nail polish composition according to the invention comprises at least one surface-modified effect pigment based on a metallic platelet-shaped substrate, at least two different hydrocarbon resins, and the solvents ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, and isopropanol.

[0103] The nail polish compositions according to the invention are extremely easy to apply to a human or artificial fingernail and / or toenail. They are characterized by good flow during application and, after subsequent drying, form a homogeneous film on a human or artificial fingernail and / or toenail.

[0104] In preferred embodiments, the nail polish according to the invention contains 50 wt.% to 70 wt.%, preferably 55 wt.% to 68 wt.% and particularly preferably 57 wt.% to 65 wt.%, in each case based on the weight of the total nail polish.

[0105] Below 55% by weight, the viscosity of the nail polish increases too much and the effect pigments cannot orient themselves optimally, leading to a reduction or loss of the mirror shine.

[0106] Above 70% by weight, the viscosity of the nail polish decreases, resulting in poorly controllable application of the nail polish to the fingernail. Other components:

[0107] The nail polish compositions according to the invention may additionally contain one or more further ingredients. These include, in particular, plasticizers and antioxidants.

[0108] Suitable plasticizers include, for example, glycols and their derivatives such as diethylene glycol ethyl ether, diethylene glycol methyl ether, diethylene glycol butyl ether, or furthermore diethylene glycol hexyl ether, ethylene glycol ethyl ether, ethylene glycol methyl ether, ethylene glycol butyl ether, ethylene glycol hexyl ether, glycol esters, derivatives of propylene glycol and in particular propylene glycol phenyl ether, propylene glycol diacetate, dipropylene glycol butyl ether, tripropylene glycol butyl ether, propylene glycol methyl ether, dipropylene glycol ethyl ether, tripropylene glycol methyl ether and diethylene glycol methyl ether, propylene glycol butyl ether, or mixtures thereof.

[0109] Furthermore, plasticizers can include, in particular, esters of carboxylic acids, such as citrates, especially trimethyl citrate, tributyl citrate, trimethylacetyl citrate, tributylacetyl citrate, triethyl-2-hexylacetyl citrates, or phthalates, especially dimethoxyethyl phthalate; or phosphates, especially tricresyl phosphate, tributyl phosphate, triphenyl phosphate, tributoxyethyl phosphate, or tartrates, especially dibuty tartrate; adipates, carbonates, sebacates; benzyl benzoate, butylacetylricinoleate, glycerylacetylricinoleate, butylglycolate, camphor, glycerol triacetate, N-ethyl-o,p-toluenesulfonamide, oxyethylene compounds such as oxyethylene oils, especially vegetable oils, such as castor oil, hydrocarbon oils, and mixtures thereof.

[0110] Preferred plasticizers are, in particular, hydrocarbon oils.

[0111] The weight fraction of the plasticizers in the total nail polish composition preferably ranges from 0 to 15 wt.%, more preferably from 1 to 10 wt.%, and particularly preferably from 5 to 10 wt.%. Antioxidants:

[0112] The nail polish composition according to the invention may further contain one or more antioxidants.

[0113] The term "antioxidants" refers to compounds that protect the components of the nail polish according to the invention, in particular the hydrocarbon binders, from the effects of oxygen, heat, ozone, and / or UV radiation. One or more such compounds may be used.

[0114] Examples of such compounds are IRGANOX® < 1010, IRGANOX® < 565, IRGANOX® < 1076 (BASF) or sulfur-containing antioxidants such as zinc dibutyldithiocarbamate (PERKACIT ZDBC, Performance Additives Italy SpA). The antioxidants are preferably used in amounts ranging from 0 to 5 wt%, and more preferably from 0.05 to 1 wt%, based on the total nail polish composition. Other additives:

[0115] The nail polish composition according to the invention may also contain other common additives known to those skilled in the art.

[0116] Other such additives include, for example, anti-settling agents, preservatives, oils, waxes, radical scavengers, wetting agents, dispersing agents, wetting aids, antifoaming agents, perfume, neutralizing agents, thickeners, UV blockers, humectants, vitamins, proteins and mixtures thereof.

[0117] In further embodiments, the nail polish composition according to the invention preferably does not contain any anti-settling agents. Surprisingly, any settled surface-modified effect pigments can generally be redispersed by simply shaking, even without the addition of anti-settling agents.

[0118] The nail polish composition according to the invention preferably has a viscosity of 10 sec to 16 sec, measured with a DIN flow cup (DIN 4 mm) according to DIN 53211.

[0119] In preferred embodiments, the nail polish composition according to the invention contains aluminium PVD effect pigments with a mean thickness h 50 from a range of 14 to 40 nm, preferably from a range of 15 to 35 nm, which are coated with cetyl phosphoric acid ester or laurylphosphonic acid as a leafing additive, aromatic hydrocarbon resins as binders and a mixture of isopropanol, ethyl acetate and butyl acetate as solvents, wherein this solvent mixture constitutes 70 to 100 wt.% of the total solvent of the nail polish composition.

[0120] In a further preferred embodiment, the nail polish composition according to the invention contains aluminum PVD effect pigments with a mean thickness h 50 from a range of 14 to 40 nm, preferably from a range of 15 to 35 nm, as well as at least two different aromatic hydrocarbon resins and a mixture of isopropanol, ethyl acetate, and butyl acetate as a solvent, wherein this solvent mixture constitutes 70 to 100 wt.% of the total solvent of the nail polish composition. Phosphoric acid cetyl esters or laurylphosphonic acid are also preferably used as leafing additives in this embodiment.

[0121] The invention further relates to a method for producing the nail polish composition according to the invention, comprising the steps i) Surface modification of the effect pigment by an additive in a dispersion in a solvent, ii) Dissolving the hydrocarbon resin in a solvent or solvent mixture, iii) Mixing and homogenizing the dispersion according to i) with the binder solution according to ii).

[0122] Preferably, step i) according to claim 3 is carried out.

[0123] The dissolution of the hydrocarbon resin in a solvent preferably takes place in a mixture of at least two, preferably three, solvents. A mixture of isopropanol, ethyl acetate, and butyl glycol is particularly preferred.

[0124] In further preferred embodiments, the solvent of step i) will also consist of isopropanol, ethyl acetate and butyl glycol or a mixture thereof, in order to avoid introducing further, potentially interfering solvents into the nail polish.

[0125] Furthermore, it is preferred to select metallic effect pigments that are present in a paste or dispersion of the preferred solvents isopropanol, ethyl acetate and butyl glycol, since the solvent of the metallic effect pigment paste also enters the nail polish according to the invention in small quantities if elaborate rewetting steps are not used.

[0126] The invention also relates to a method for coating a natural or artificial fingernail comprising the steps of: a) Coating the natural or artificial fingernail with a nail polish composition according to the invention and subsequent drying of the nail polish, b) optionally subsequent coating of the nail polish with a clear varnish.

[0127] Applying a clear coat significantly increases the abrasion resistance of the nail polish. Due to the pronounced leafing effect of the effect pigments in the nail polish, it naturally has a rather low abrasion resistance.

[0128] Before step a), the natural or artificial fingernail can also be coated with a clear nail polish to create the smoothest possible surface. This is recommended if the fingernails are very rough.

[0129] The subsequent coating with clear varnish in step b) can be carried out with the same or a different clear varnish as the nail varnish according to the invention. However, this clear varnish must not contain any effect pigments, as these would mask the desired effect of the nail varnish according to the invention.

[0130] However, the clear coat in step b) can contain conventional color pigments or dyes. Particularly in combination with metallic PVD aluminum pigments or with thin, wet-milled aluminum effect pigments with an h50 value of 20 to below 100 nm, optically very appealing effects can be achieved. Preferably, the nail polish compositions according to the invention, pigmented with the effect pigments after step a), exhibit a mirror-like gloss.

[0131] In a further embodiment, the nail polish composition according to the invention can be top-coated with a low-viscosity UV-curing clear coat in order to increase the abrasion resistance of the nail polish composition according to the invention.

[0132] Solvent-based clearcoats can also be used preferentially. Without being bound to any specific theory, the clearcoat is preferably based on polar binders that interact only minimally with the hydrocarbon resins of the clearcoat according to the invention. In particularly preferred embodiments, these clearcoats are based on binders such as polyvinyl butyral (PVB), polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), or mixtures thereof.

[0133] Furthermore, the clear coat preferably contains solvents that do not dissolve or partially dissolve the nonpolar hydrocarbon resins of the coating according to the invention. For example, isopropanol can be used for this purpose. Otherwise, the leafing effect pigments could also be partially dissolved and their orientation disrupted, thereby impairing the mirror-like gloss effect.

[0134] Surprisingly, the clear varnishes according to the invention exhibit very good adhesion resistance to the nail polish according to the invention.

[0135] In a further aspect of the invention, the surface-modified effect pigments according to claim 1 or 2 can be used in other cosmetic applications. These include, for example, body powder, face powder, pressed or loose powder, powder cream, eye makeup such as eyeshadow, mascara, eyeliner, liquid eyeliner, eyebrow pencil, lip balm, lipstick, lip gloss, lip liner, hair styling compositions such as hairspray, hair mousse, hair gel, hair wax, hair mascara, permanent or semi-permanent hair colors, temporary hair colors, or skin care compositions such as lotions, gels, and emulsions.

[0136] The surface-modified effect pigments according to the invention are combined with raw materials, excipients, and active ingredients suitable for the respective application. The total concentration of the surface-modified effect pigments according to the invention in the cosmetic formulation can range from 0.001 wt.% for rinse-off products to 40.0 wt.% for leave-on products, in each case based on the total weight of the formulation. [0152] A 70 wt% binder solution F100 was prepared in a suitable stirring vessel. For this purpose, 30 g of butyl acetate 98 / 100 were added, and while stirring and cooling (12 °C) using the dissolver Dispermat CNf2 (Getzmann GmbH), 70 g of the binder Kristalex F100 Hydrocarbon Resin (Eastman) was added, followed by stirring for 30 minutes at 3000 to 4000 rpm / min.

[0153] In a second suitable stirring vessel, a 60 wt% binder solution 5140 was prepared. For this purpose, 40 g of butyl acetate 98 / 100 were added, while stirring and cooling (12 °C) with the dissolver Dispermat CNf2 (Getzmann GmbH), 60 g of the binder Kristalex 5140 Hydrocarbon Resin (Eastman) was added and then stirred for 30 minutes at 3000 to 4000 rpm / min.

[0154] The non-volatile fraction (binder solid fraction) of the binder solutions described above was determined in accordance with DIN EN ISO 3251:2008.

[0155] To prepare the clear coat, the 70 wt% binder solution F100 and the 60 wt% binder solution 5140 were combined according to the table below, stirring at 900 rpm / min with the IKA RW 20 Digital laboratory stirrer (IKA) at room temperature and stirred for 5 to 10 minutes. The solvents were then added one after the other according to the respective table below, stirring at 600 rpm / min. IIb Production of the nail polish compositions according to the invention

[0156] To prepare the nail polish compositions according to the invention of Examples 32 to 35, 4 g of the respective surface-modified effect pigment according to Tables 9, 10 and 11 below were placed and 96 g of the clear lacquer were added while stirring at 600 rpm / min.

[0157] The optical appearance of the nail polish compositions according to the invention, as shown in Examples 32 to 43, was determined after application to an artificial fingernail and subsequent drying using the surface-modified effect pigment from Example 5. The surface-modified effect pigment used in each case exhibited pronounced leafing behavior and, in some cases, a pronounced mirror gloss in the clear lacquer produced according to Ila. Regarding application behavior, it was found that the nail polish compositions according to the invention with a binder solids content of 60 wt.%, based on the total weight of the clear lacquer, were more difficult to apply due to their higher viscosity than the nail polish applications according to the invention with a binder solids content of 30 wt.% or 40 wt.%, each based on the total weight of the clear lacquer.

[0158] For the nail polish compositions according to the invention of Examples 44 to 48, the clear lacquer was prepared as described above under Ila. To prepare the nail lacquer compositions according to the invention of Examples 44 to 48, 4 g of the respective surface-modified effect pigment according to Table 12 below were placed on the surface and 96 g of the clear lacquer were added while stirring at 600 rpm / min.

[0159] For the nail polish compositions according to the invention of Examples 49 to 64, the clear lacquer was produced according to Table 13 as described above under Ila.

[0160] To prepare the nail polish compositions according to the invention of Examples 49 to 64, the respective surface-modified effect pigment was provided according to Table 14 below, and the clear lacquer from Table 13 was added according to Table 14 while stirring at 600 rpm / min. The nail lacquer compositions according to the invention of Examples 50 to 66 had a binder solids content of 40 wt.%, based on the total weight of the clear lacquer. [0161] For the nail polish compositions of comparative examples 17 to 20, the clear lacquer was prepared as described above in section IIa. For the preparation of the nail polish compositions of comparative examples 18 to 20, 4 g of the respective surface-modified effect pigment were placed according to Table 15 below, and 96 g of the clear lacquer were added while stirring at 600 rpm / min.

[0162] The nail polish compositions of Comparative Examples 17 to 20, after application to an artificial fingernail and subsequent drying, exhibited a significantly inferior optical appearance compared to the nail polish compositions according to the invention. This is presumably due to the omission of one of the solvents (Comparative Example 17) and / or an excessively high relative proportion of the solvents isopropanol and / or ethyl acetate compared to butyl acetate (Comparative Examples 18 and 19). Furthermore, the addition of an additional solvent (acetone in Comparative Example 20) has a negative effect. The nail polish applications of the Comparative Examples were likely cloudy and white due to excessively rapid drying. The exact compositions of the nail polishes of the examples according to the invention and the Comparative Examples can also be found in Table 18.

[0163] For the nail polish compositions of comparative examples 21 to 24, the clear lacquer was prepared as described above in section IIa. To prepare the nail polish compositions of comparative examples 21 to 24, 4 g of the respective surface-modified effect pigment were placed according to Table 16 below, and 96 g of the clear lacquer were added while stirring at 600 rpm / min.

[0164] The nail polish compositions of comparison examples 21 to 24 had a binder solids content of 20 wt.%, based on the total weight of the clear lacquer.

[0165] The nail polish compositions of comparative examples 21 to 24, after application to an artificial fingernail and subsequent drying, exhibited a significantly inferior optical appearance compared to the nail polish applications according to the invention. This is presumably due to the insufficient binder solids content of approximately 20% by weight, based on the total weight of the clear lacquer. The surface-modified effect pigment was presumably wetted by the solvent present in the clear lacquer, which is why the effect pigment was unable to align itself with the surface of the clear lacquer during or after application.

[0166] To prepare the nail polish compositions of comparative examples 25 to 30, the respective surface-modified effect pigment was added according to Table 17 below, and the clear lacquer from Table 13 was added according to Table 17 while stirring at 600 rpm / min. The nail polish compositions of comparative examples 25 to 30 had a binder solids content of 40 wt.%, based on the total weight of the clear lacquer. Characterization of the surface-modified effect pigments according to the invention, preferably to be used in a nail polish composition, and of the surface-modified effect pigments IIIa Particle size measurement

[0168] The size distribution curve of the surface-modified effect pigments according to the invention, preferably for use in a nail polish composition, the surface-modified effect pigments according to claim 1, and the pigments of the comparative examples, each based on non-metallic platelet-shaped substrates, was determined using the Mastersizer 2000 instrument from Malvern, according to the manufacturer's instructions. For this purpose, approximately 0.1 g of each pigment was added as an aqueous suspension, without the addition of dispersing agents, to the sample preparation cell of the measuring instrument using a Pasteur pipette while stirring continuously, and the measurement was taken several times. The mean values were calculated from the individual measurement results. The evaluation of the scattered light signals was carried out according to the Fraunhofer method.

[0169] The size distribution curve of the surface-modified effect pigments according to the invention, preferably for use in a nail polish composition, the surface-modified effect pigments according to claim 1, and the pigments of the comparative examples, each based on metallic platelet-shaped substrates, was measured using the Cilas 1064 instrument (Quantachrome) and the Horiba LA-930 instrument (Horiba), respectively, in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. For this purpose, approximately 50 ml of each pigment was suspended in isopropanol, treated for 300 seconds in an ultrasonic bath (instrument: Sonorex IK 52, Bandelin), and then transferred to the sample preparation cell of the measuring instrument using a Pasteur pipette and measured several times. Average values were calculated from the individual measurement results. The evaluation of the scattered light signals was performed according to the Fraunhofer method.

[0170] In the context of this invention, the mean particle size D50 is understood to be the D50 value of the cumulative frequency distribution of the volume-averaged size distribution function, as obtained by laser diffraction methods. The D50 value indicates that 50% of the pigments have a volume-averaged diameter that is equal to or less than the specified value, for example, 20 µm. Similarly, the D40 and D90 values indicate that 10% and 90% of the pigments, respectively, have a volume-averaged diameter that is equal to or less than the respective measured value.

[0171] The span ΔD, defined as Δ D = D 90 − D 10 D 50 , indicates the width of the particle size distribution. With regard to the optical appearance of the surface-modified effect pigments according to the invention, preferably to be used in a nail polish composition, or the surface-modified effect pigments according to claim 1, a small value of ΔD, i.e. a narrow range, is preferred. IIIb Determination of the mean thickness of metallic or non-metallic plate-shaped substrates, determination of the mean total thickness of the surface-modified effect pigment

[0172] The determination of the mean thicknesses h 50 of the surface-modified effect pigments according to the invention, preferably to be used in a nail polish composition, the surface-modified effect pigments according to claim 1 and the pigments of the comparison examples was carried out according to the method described in WO 2004 / 087816 A2 (pages 24 and 25) using SEM. IIIc Determination of the metal oxide content of synthetic mica platelets

[0173] The metal oxide content of the synthetic mica platelets was determined by X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF). For this purpose, the synthetic mica platelets were incorporated into a lithium tetraborate glass tablet, fixed in solid sample beakers, and measured. The Advantix ARL instrument from Thermo Scientific was used. IV. Optical characterization of the nail polish compositions according to the invention IVa Determination of gloss (20° geometry) and haze

[0174] To objectively determine the optical appearance of the nail polish compositions according to the invention, as well as the nail polish compositions of the comparison examples, each nail polish composition was applied to glass plates using a box squeegee (Erichsen System Wasag Model 288 film applicator, Erichsen) to a wet film thickness of 110 µm and then dried at room temperature. The gloss value (20° geometry) and the haze value (Hlog) of the nail polish compositions applied in this way were measured using the haze gloss device (BYK Gardner).

[0175] For gloss measurement, the 20° geometry for high-gloss surfaces was used (Byk-Gardner, Digital Catalog "Quality Control for Paints and Plastics", page 16). Both gloss (20° geometry) and haze (Hlog) were determined at a minimum of 5 different locations on the nail polish application. Table 18 below lists the resulting mean values for gloss (20° geometry) and haze (Hlog). V Results:

[0176] Table 19 lists the gloss and haze values of selected examples and comparison examples. Furthermore, the pigmentation levels, binder concentrations, and solvent compositions in the nail polish formulations have been calculated.

[0177] The gloss and haze values listed in Table 19 should not be considered independently of each other. Therefore, a nail polish composition with a high haze value and a low gloss value can still produce a mirror-like effect.

[0178] The nail polish compositions according to the invention in Examples 48 to 64 exhibited pronounced leafing behavior after application, even producing a mirror-like effect. The highest optical quality nail polish applications with an excellent mirror effect were obtained by using PVD pigments coated with cetyl phosphoric acid ester (Hostaphat CC 100) (Examples 49, 51, 54, 56, 57, 58 and 59).

[0179] In contrast, the nail polish compositions in comparison examples 27 to 30, which did not contain any additives, showed no leafing effect and in some cases even exhibited significant speckling after application. Consequently, the gloss and haze values were poor.

[0180] In comparative example 25, the potassium salt of the cetyl phosphoric acid ester was used, which is disadvantageous.

[0181] In comparison example 26, the application contained specks. This is probably due to an excessively high proportion of the additive in the production of the coated metal pigment.
