Description
[0001] The present invention relates to a transponder label for a container, which provides reliable electronic identification, for example for a pharmaceutical container, in a simple and cost-effective manner. The invention also relates to a system comprising such a transponder label. Furthermore, the invention relates to a method for manufacturing such a transponder label.
[0002] Labeling arrangements typically include a label that can serve for authorization, identification, authentication, or proof of origin. In particular, such labeling arrangements are used to provide information about contents or for traceability. This applies, among other things, to containers in the pharmaceutical and medical sectors whose contents need to be reliably labeled.
[0003] From publication IT TO2010A000493 A1, an RFID label with an antenna structure arranged on a substrate is known, configured as a dipole with folded arms. Each arm comprises two half-arms connected via a fold, each carrying a meander, with the half-arm extending from the central loop area being connected to it and the folded half-arm terminating in a free end. From publication US 2022 / 0318588 A1, an RFID label for a container is known, comprising a loop conductor and an antenna unit with two conductor units. A conductor unit includes a meandering first element, a linear second element, a hook-shaped third element, and grid-shaped fourth elements for impedance matching.
[0004] The invention aims to provide a simple, cost-effective, reliable, and convenient way to identify a container. This objective is achieved by the features of the independent claims. Advantageous embodiments are specified in the respective dependent claims. According to one aspect of the invention, a transponder label for a container comprises a carrier layer and an RFID functional unit arranged on the carrier layer. The carrier layer is, for example, a plastic film such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The RFID functional unit comprises an RFID chip and an antenna structure coupled to it. The antenna structure has a first antenna section and a second antenna section. The antenna structure further comprises an antenna loop arranged between and coupled to the first and second antenna sections. At least one of the two antenna sections comprises a first meandering antenna arm and a second meandering antenna arm, which are designed as separate antenna arms and are arranged at a predetermined distance from each other and are electromagnetically coupled to each other, and which are each coupled to the antenna loop, so that a predetermined number of oscillation modes of the antenna structure is established.
[0005] The described transponder label enables particularly reliable RFID functionality for containers such as syringes, injection vials, or pharmaceutical vials. Furthermore, the transponder label is also suitable for other medical or pharmaceutical containers or primary packaging. The transponder label can also be used for other items for which electronic identification is beneficial. The specifically designed and adjacent meandering antenna arms are inductively and capacitively coupled, thus establishing a controlled mode enhancement and enabling the antenna structure to function as a multimodal RFID antenna with multiple resonant frequencies.
[0006] These deliberately introduced resonant frequencies can be specifically tailored to a given application, ensuring that a container equipped with a transponder label can be reliably electronically marked and read despite varying conditions or influences. A key insight gained from the present invention is that RFID marking is challenging due to various external constraints. Such constraints include, for example, the small dimensions of a primary container, which severely limits the space available for the antenna. Furthermore, proximity to dissipative media, such as glass, water, or saline aqueous solutions, can significantly reduce the performance of an RFID unit. Additionally, even with identical primary containers, the fill levels of, for example, different medications can vary considerably.
[0007] Such boundary conditions lead to an undesirable frequency shift of the resonant frequency and can cause it to fall outside the reading window of a reader. For example, an RFID reader for reading an RFID unit is, according to regulatory requirements, configured for a reading range of 865-868 MHz. For instance, a container that is only half full can no longer be read electronically over the distance required for the application, and the stored data on the RFID chip cannot be accessed.
[0008] The described transponder label uses an antenna structure to selectively provide multiple resonant frequencies, allowing for the use of different resonance frequencies even if the primary resonant frequency shifts. This shift brings the resonance frequency into the reader's range, thus enabling communication with a reader and reliable electronic identification of a primary container via RFID, regardless of the previously described boundary conditions. The antenna structure is designed with a specific radiation pattern and reading range to match the intended reader.
[0009] For example, the antenna structure on one side of the antenna loop features two meandering antenna arms that form electromagnetically coupled resonators as dipole antennas. On the opposite side of the antenna loop, for example, only one antenna arm is provided, which establishes another dipole resonator. Together with the inner antenna loop, the antenna structure can thus, depending on the coupling strength of the individual antenna components to each other, selectively provide, for example, four resonant frequencies, which for the empty container are set at, for example, 500 MHz, 865 MHz, 975 MHz, and 1050 MHz. In this configuration, the resonance at 865 MHz would fall optimally within the reading range of the reader. When the tank is half full, a frequency shift occurs, so that, for example, the resonant frequency of 975 MHz moves into the reading range of an RFID reader (in this example 865 MHz - 868 MHz).If the vessel is completely filled and has reached its maximum fill level, the resulting further frequency shift can be accounted for with the original resonant frequency of 1050 MHz, and the vessel can still be read electronically in this state. A frequency shift towards lower frequencies occurs with increasing fill level of a dissipative medium.
[0010] It is a finding related to the present invention that in an uncoupled system, the number of modes can be selectively influenced by coupling antenna arms and an inner antenna loop. For example, at least one of the two resonances is split, resulting in approximately three modes. If an inner antenna loop is also considered for such a system with antenna arms, for example, six oscillation modes can be realized and utilized.
[0011] According to a further development of the transponder label, both antenna sections each have a first meandering antenna arm and a second meandering antenna arm. The respective antenna arms are arranged at a predetermined distance from each other and electromagnetically coupled. This allows for the generation of additional resonant frequencies, which are then made available for reading via the antenna structure. According to this embodiment, with two meandering antenna arms on each side of the antenna loop, six resonant frequencies can be set, preferably tuned to different edge bindings to enable particularly secure and reliable electronic reading of the RFID chip and identification of the container.Furthermore, the antenna structure of the transponder label can also have three or more meandering antenna arms in a respective antenna section, which are spaced at predetermined intervals so that they couple electromagnetically with each other and provide a higher number of modes of resonant frequencies.
[0012] According to a further development of the transponder label, the first and second antenna arms each have a rectangular meandering shape, with multiple straight sections of predetermined length. The length of the individual sections, as well as the overall length of each antenna arm, influences the inductive and capacitive coupling between them and thus determines the coupling strength and the establishment of desired resonant frequencies. The rectangular meandering shape of one or more antenna arms enables a particularly space-saving and dense antenna structure. Alternatively or additionally, the antenna arms can have a wave-like or circular meandering pattern. Furthermore, the antenna arms can also exhibit different meandering patterns in sections or entirely. The antenna arms are each designed in such a way that a predetermined electromagnetic coupling between them can be realized, enabling the controlled setting of several resonant frequencies.
[0013] The antenna arms are connected to the inner antenna loop on one side and have free end sections on the other. The antenna arms can be continuous lines or, alternatively, have a planar antenna element at their free end sections, which can have a beneficial effect on the performance and read range of the RFID functional unit.
[0014] Furthermore, the individual antenna arms can be connected to the inner antenna loop at a common or different coupling points. Different coupling positions create different phase points and can also affect the establishment of the various modes, and must therefore be taken into account when designing the antenna structure.
[0015] Furthermore, the linewidth of the antenna arms also affects electromagnetic coupling and the formation of resonant frequencies. Accordingly, the respective first and / or second antenna arm can have a linewidth between 150 and 1000 µm. The linewidth refers to an extent parallel to the plane of the substrate layer. The linewidth therefore corresponds to the extent of the respective antenna arm when viewed from above the transponder label.
[0016] The overall length of each antenna arm determines the fundamental frequency of the uncoupled oscillating systems. Accordingly, the respective first and / or second antenna arm can, for example, have an overall length between 20 and 120 mm.
[0017] The total length refers to the extension of the antenna arms along their predominant linear shape from the free end section to the coupling point where they couple with the antenna loop.
[0018] The length of the sections of the antenna arms where they run parallel determines the degree of coupling strength. In these sections, both antenna arms couple inductively and capacitively, thus splitting the resonant frequencies compared to an uncoupled system. The length of these sections can range from almost 0 mm to the total length of the individual antenna arms.
[0019] In particular, the section length and / or overall length of the respective first and / or second antenna arm can be designed to suit the container to be labeled. The same applies to the line width of the respective first and / or second antenna arm and the distance between two adjacent antenna arms, which are preferably designed to suit the container to be labeled. The material of the container, its intended contents, and any fill levels can be taken into account and incorporated into the design of the antenna structure. Furthermore, the antenna structure can be designed for direct attachment to a container closure or body, so that the antenna structure, particularly with regard to its length and width, and a circumference and / or surface of the container intended for attachment can be designed to be compatible.
[0020] The transponder label may also incorporate security features that indicate opening or attempted tampering with the container for which the label is intended. For example, it may have perforations combined with cutouts or branches to leave clearly visible damage to the label after the container has been opened. The label may also be positioned at a junction between the container closure and the container body, so that opening the container or attempting to remove the label results in deliberate destruction. Alternatively or additionally, the label may include a film or film element with a predetermined tear resistance.
[0021] The carrier layer of the transponder label includes an adhesive layer, allowing the label to be easily and reliably attached to the primary closure and / or the vessel body. The transponder label can be single-layered or multi-layered. For example, it can be a wraparound or over-wrap label that encircles the vessel closure and / or vessel body along the vessel's longitudinal axis. Alternatively, the transponder label can be designed to only partially cover the vessel's circumference.
[0022] According to another aspect, the invention includes the use of an embodiment of the described transponder label for a vessel with a vessel body and a vessel closure, such as a syringe, an injection vial or a vial.
[0023] According to a further aspect of the invention, a system comprises a vessel, for example one of those described above with a vessel body and a vessel closure, and an embodiment of the described transponder label that is connected to the vessel body and / or the vessel closure.
[0024] Because the use and the system relate to or include an embodiment of the described transponder label, the described properties and characteristics of the transponder label are also disclosed for the use and for the system, and vice versa.
[0025] According to a further aspect of the invention, a method for manufacturing a transponder label embodiment comprises providing a carrier layer and forming an RFID functional unit with an RFID chip and an antenna structure coupled to it on the carrier layer. The antenna structure is formed with a first antenna section, a second antenna section, and an antenna loop, such that it is arranged between and coupled to the first and second antenna sections. At least one of the two antenna sections is formed with a first meandering antenna arm and a second meandering antenna arm, such that these are designed as separate antenna arms and are arranged at a predetermined distance from one another, electromagnetically coupled to each other, and each coupled to the antenna loop. The antenna structure of the RFID functional unit can be formed, for example, by etching aluminum and / or by printing a silver conductive paste onto the substrate.
[0026] Because the method relates to the production of an embodiment of the described transponder label, the described properties and characteristics of the transponder label are also disclosed for the method and vice versa.
[0027] Using the described transponder label, a clear and particularly reliable RFID functionalization of containers can be achieved, which can take into account various boundary conditions such as material, contents, and different fill levels. Therefore, it is not necessary to use complex label designs that, for example, require the formation of a label flap to improve readability.
[0028] It is a finding related to the present invention that, among other things, it must be ensured that a label flag stands away from the primary container under all circumstances and is surrounded only by air. If this is not the case, i.e., if the flags of individual primary containers are pressed against the container to be marked by neighboring containers or even by the outer packaging, an environment other than air is created, and the performance of an RFID component can be significantly impaired. Such impairments can very easily lead to the RFID component no longer being reliably readable in the corresponding application environment.
[0029] Furthermore, regardless of the limitations of RFID functionality, providing a formable label flag requires additional materials, thus increasing costs and potentially complicating or hindering the handling of the container in practical applications, such as administering medication. Using the described transponder label, material requirements and costs can be kept very low, and there are no adverse effects on the handling of the container to which the transponder label is attached.
[0030] The described transponder label, with its special antenna structure, is designed to utilize the effect of coupled resonators to increase the number of possible vibration modes. This allows it to provide vibration amplitudes within the desired frequency band of the specified reader, even under varying environmental conditions such as different fill levels and salinity levels. Because the meandering antenna arms are coupled together as dipole resonators, they mutually influence each other, thus affecting their electromagnetic properties. This allows for a targeted multiplication of the possible vibration modes within the overall antenna structure. This results in symmetrical and antisymmetrical modes, whose position in the frequency domain and their characteristics, in terms of their respective amplitude and quality factor, depend on the natural frequencies of the uncoupled individual systems or antenna arms and the strength of the mutual coupling. The controlled development of multiple resonant frequencies enables reliable electronic reading of data on the RFID chip, independent of certain environmental conditions.
[0031] To further illustrate mode-locking, consider the following two extreme cases: The first extreme occurs when the vessel is completely empty or unfilled, resulting in minimal environmental influence and no frequency shift or attenuation from a dissipative medium. The second extreme occurs when the vessel is completely filled, maximizing environmental influence and resulting in maximum frequency shift and attenuation from the dissipative medium. In the case of water as the dissipative medium, a frequency shift greater than 200 MHz can occur. With a typical half-width of resonance frequencies of approximately 20 MHz, it is understandable that a single-mode resonator will only achieve a usable resonance amplitude in the desired frequency band in one of these two cases.
[0032] Regarding the officially mandated RFID frequency band in Europe for reading RFID functionality, the permissible frequency range is 865-868 MHz, resulting in a bandwidth of 3 MHz. In other regions, such as the USA, reading RFID functionality is permitted in a frequency band of 902-928 MHz, resulting in a bandwidth of 26 MHz. Accordingly, the resonant frequencies of the transponder tag can be adapted to the specific region for which it is intended in a future deployment.
[0033] By designing the antenna structure of the transponder label with coupled resonant frequencies and specifically tailoring the coupling to the intended applications, it is possible to achieve a resonant mode in the desired frequency band of the reading device in both cases, whether the container is completely full or empty. Thus, the multimodal antenna structure enables application-specific read ranges under varying environmental conditions. The antenna structure can be applied directly to the container using the transponder label.
[0034] In principle, two, three, or more resonators or antenna arms can be electromagnetically coupled. The parameters responsible for the coupling strength, such as the linewidths of the individual antenna arms, the spacing between the lines of the antenna arms, the length of the individual antenna arms, and the position of the connection points of the antenna arms to the inner antenna loop, can also be varied and adapted to the specific application.
[0035] The following are exemplary embodiments of the invention explained with reference to schematic drawings. These show: Figure 1 shows an embodiment of a system with a container and a transponder label attached to it; Figures 2-5 show embodiments of the transponder label according to Figure 1 , and Figure 6 a flowchart for a procedure for manufacturing the transponder label according to the Figures 1-5 .

[0037] The Figure 1 Figure 1 shows a schematic side view of a system 1 with a vessel 3 and a transponder label 2 applied to the vessel 3. The vessel 3 comprises a vessel body 5 and a vessel closure 4, which is coupled to the vessel body 5 and arranged above the vessel body 5 with respect to a longitudinal axis L. The transponder label 2 is arranged according to Figure 1 attached to the vessel body 5. Alternatively or additionally, the transponder label 2 can be attached to the vessel closure 4 and / or rotated by 90° or otherwise oriented.
[0038] The Figures 2-5The figures show exemplary embodiments of the transponder label 2 in a schematic top view. Figures 2 and 3 Figure 2 shows an embodiment of the transponder label 2, comprising a carrier layer 20 and an RFID functional unit with an RFID chip 18 and an antenna structure 10 coupled to the carrier layer 20. The antenna structure 10 comprises a first antenna section 11, a second antenna section 12, and an antenna loop 17, which is arranged between and coupled to the first and second antenna sections 11, 12. According to the Figures 2 and 3 The antenna loop 17 can also be referred to as the inner antenna loop, while the first antenna section 11 on the left and the second antenna section 12 on the right of it are coupled to the inner antenna loop 17 at different coupling points 19.
[0039] Within the context of this description, terms such as "top" and "bottom" as well as "right" and "left" refer to an arrangement or orientation of the transponder label 2, as illustrated in the figures. As a guide, a respective coordinate system with a vertical x-direction and a horizontal y-direction is shown in the figures. Figures 2-5 marked.
[0040] The two antenna sections 11 and 12 each have a first meandering antenna arm 13 and a second meandering antenna arm 14, which are arranged at a predetermined distance D1, D2, D3 from each other and electromagnetically coupled. The antenna arms 13 and 14 each have a rectangular meandering shape, with the second antenna arm 14 being located predominantly within the meandering shape of the first antenna arm 13. The antenna arms 13 and 14 are predominantly linear and have a predetermined line width. At each free end, the antenna arms 13 and 14 each have a planar antenna element 15 or 16, which can have a particularly beneficial effect on the read range and performance of the RFID functional unit. Alternatively, the antenna arms 13, 14 can also be designed as continuous lines (see figure). Figure 5Furthermore, an antenna section 11, 12 can also have only one antenna arm 13 or 14 (see Figure 4 Alternatively, an antenna section 11, 12 can also have three or more antenna arms 13, 14 that are partially or completely electromagnetically coupled to each other.
[0041] The antenna arms 13 and 14 are designed and arranged in such a way that they couple inductively and capacitively to each other and establish a controlled number of resonant frequencies of the antenna structure 10. The following parameters can influence the formation of the resonant frequencies: the linewidth of the respective antenna arm 13, 14; the overall length of the respective antenna arm 13, 14; and the outer width A1, A2 of the respective antenna arm 13, 14 (see figure). Figure 2 ); an inner width B1, B2 of the respective antenna arm 13, 14 (see Figure 2 ); horizontal and / or vertical distances D1, D2, D3 between the antenna arms 13, 14 (see Figures 2and 3 ); a height C1, C2 of the respective antenna arms 13, 14 (see Figure 3 ). In this context, horizontal distances or widths as well as vertical distances and heights refer to the drawn x and y directions. Figure 2 This essentially illustrates horizontal dimensions along the y-direction. Figure 3 This essentially illustrates vertical dimensions along the x-direction. Figures 2-5 However, they can also be understood as a top view, so that the x and y directions are perpendicular to each other within a horizontal plane.
[0042] The line width of each antenna arm 13, 14 refers to the depicted xy-plane and has, for example, a value between 150 and 1000 µm. The total length of each antenna arm 13, 14 from its outer free end to a respective coupling point 19, where the antenna arm 13, 14 is connected to the inner antenna loop 17, has, for example, a value between 20 and 120 mm. The height C1, C2 of each antenna arm 13, 14 can have, for example, a value between 10 and 20 mm. The spacings D1, D2, and D3 can each have a value corresponding to 10% to 150% of the line width.
[0043] The described and illustrated antenna structures 10 each comprise a coupling of at least two meandering dipole antennas configured as antenna arms 13, 14. Both antenna arms 13, 14 have similar resonant frequencies on their own. The coupling of the two antenna arms 13, 14 of one of the antenna sections 11, 12 is both inductive and capacitive and depends on the length of the parallel conductor sections, their spacing, and their respective linewidths. Furthermore, they couple into the inner antenna loop 17 at different phase points 19. By changing these parameters, the coupling strength can be selectively varied, and thus the resonance behavior of the antenna structure 10 can be precisely controlled. By appropriately varying the coupling strength, the antenna structure 10 as a whole system can be tailored to specific environmental conditions in the intended application.
[0044] The antenna arms 13, 14 and the antenna loop 17 each influence each other with regard to their electromagnetic properties, such that the coupling determines the majority of resonant frequencies and their characteristics. According to the embodiments shown in the Figures 2-3 and 5 Six different resonant frequencies are provided. In comparison, the design of the antenna structure 10 according to Figure 4 Four different resonant frequencies are available for readout. Alternatively, the antenna structure 10 can also be designed to provide at least two or three different resonant frequencies. The number of modes varies depending on the coupling strength, existing symmetries, and frequency spacing compared to uncoupled oscillatory systems. Regarding the embodiments according to the Figures 2-3 A fashion number can, for example, be between four and eight fashions, and according to Figure 4 Between two and four modes will be established.
[0045] A method for producing the transponder label 2 can be described according to the flowchart in Figure 6 The process is carried out as follows: In step S1, the carrier layer 20, for example in the form of a PET plastic film, is provided.
[0046] In step S2, the RFID functional unit with the RFID chip 18 and the antenna structure 10 coupled to it is formed on the substrate layer 20. The antenna structure 10 can be formed on the substrate layer 20 by etching and / or printing aluminum and / or silver. The antenna structure 10 is formed with the two antenna sections 11 and 12 and the intervening antenna loop 17, such that these are connected to each other by corresponding coupling points 19. At least one of the two antenna sections 11, 12 is formed with the first and second meandering antenna arms 13 and 14, respectively, so that these are arranged at a predetermined distance D1, D2, D3 from each other and electromagnetically coupled to each other.
[0047] In this way, a configuration of the transponder label 2 can be developed in which the antenna structure 10 enables multi-mode UHF RFID identification for small primary containers in pharmaceutical applications. Applied to relatively small primary containers, such as syringes, the transponder label 2 allows for reliable RFID identification and electronic reading despite varying liquid levels within the container 3. Through the targeted use of coupled resonators, the antenna structure 10 provides an increased number of possible vibration modes, each of which can be read by a reader. The described design of the transponder label 2 significantly reduces the risk of the RFID functional unit not being reliably read due to a frequency shift. Reference symbol list
