AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing thermal management systems for energy storage units, such as battery packs, face challenges in effectively dissipating heat, leading to potential thermal runaway, which can result in safety issues like inflammation and explosion. Current technologies like air-cooling and liquid-cooling have limitations, including high costs, difficulty in controlling ambient temperatures, and inefficient heat transfer.

Method used

A thermal management system that immerses the energy storage unit's cells in a thermal medium within an external casing, with a control unit that monitors cell parameters and adjusts the flow characteristics of the thermal medium to maintain optimal operating temperatures. This system actively regulates thermal equilibrium across various operating states, enhancing safety and efficiency.

Benefits of technology

The proposed system effectively manages thermal conditions within energy storage units, preventing thermal runaway and extending the life cycle of the cells by ensuring efficient heat dissipation. It also reduces the risk of safety incidents and lowers implementation costs compared to traditional methods.

Abstract

The present subject matter relates in general to an energy storage unit (102). More particularly but not exclusively the present subject matter relates to a thermal management system (100) for the energy storage unit (102) and a method (300) thereof. The thermal management system (100) comprises a control unit in communication with a heat exchanger (106) and one or more pumping units (108). The control unit is configured to control one or more flow characteristics of the thermal medium, where the plurality of cells (202) of the energy storage unit (102) is immersed in the thermal medium. The control unit additionally control one or more cell parameters of the plurality of cells (202). The thermal management system (100) and method (300) is configured to actively thermally regulate the plurality of cells (202) of the energy storage unit (102).
