AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Current treatments for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and Duchenne muscular dystrophy are inadequate, and there is a need for effective pharmaceutical compositions that can prevent or treat these myopathies by addressing the underlying pathogenic mechanisms.

Method used

A pharmaceutical composition comprising pantothenic acid, specifically calcium pantothenate, and dimenhydrinate, which promotes myoblast differentiation and myogenesis, increasing the expression of MHC, myogenin 4-EBP, and p70S6K, thereby prolonging life and improving muscle function in ALS and Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Benefits of technology

The combination of calcium pantothenate and dimenhydrinate synergistically enhances myoblast differentiation and myogenesis, leading to prolonged survival in ALS models and improved muscle growth in Duchenne muscular dystrophy, offering a potential therapeutic approach.

Abstract

The present invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition comprising calcium pantothenate, or calcium pantothenate and dimenhydrinate, as active ingredients for the prevention and treatment of myopathy. According to the present description, calcium pantothenate increases the expression of MHC, myogenin 4-EBP, and p70S6K to promote myoblast differentiation and myogenesis, thereby prolonging lifespan in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and promoting mesenchymal stem cell growth in mice with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. These effects are synergistically enhanced by combination treatment with dimenhydrinate. Therefore, they can be advantageously used to prevent or treat myopathy.
