AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Conventional window-based application management systems require large screen sizes and are inefficient on devices with limited screen space, such as smartphones and PDAs, making it difficult to switch between applications and documents.

Method used

A system and method that allows for a full-screen mode with one activity occupying the entire display and a windowed mode where multiple activities are visible, with windows shifting in concert to maintain a persistent positional relationship, enabling easy navigation and interaction among activities.

Benefits of technology

Enables efficient application management on devices with small screens by providing a scalable solution for switching and interacting with multiple activities while optimizing screen space.

Abstract

A computer device runs multiple activities simultaneously and offers at least two modes for interacting with them. The user can switch between modes as desired. In full-screen mode, an activity occupies almost the entire screen. In windowed mode, the activity is displayed within a window, and a portion of at least one other window is also displayed. In windowed mode, the user can move windows, thus shifting focus from one activity to another. For example, the window that has focus can be moved off-screen and replaced by a new window that then takes focus. The windows are arranged sequentially and move in a coordinated manner; moving a window off one edge of the screen causes a new window to appear on the opposite edge. A persistent positional relationship can be established between the windows.
