AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Current photobiomodulation therapies for the eye, such as laser stimulation, often result in unintended collateral effects due to insufficient control over pulse duration and energy, which can lead to damage to the retina and other structures, particularly when treating conditions like dry eye syndrome and intraocular pressure.

Method used

The development of an ophthalmic treatment apparatus using a laser that emits pulses of radiation with precise control over pulse duration (less than 1 ps to 100 ms) and energy (less than 5 mJ per pulse) focused on specific locations around the limbus, minimizing collateral effects by utilizing beam conditioning and scanning optics to concentrate the beam on the corneal epithelium while avoiding the underlying structures.

Benefits of technology

This approach effectively stimulates corneal stem cells, particularly in the epithelium, while minimizing damage to other eye tissues, providing targeted treatment for conditions like dry eye syndrome and adjusting energy levels to avoid intraocular pressure reduction in normal-pressure patients.

Abstract

Apparatus (20) for ophthalmic treatment includes an optical unit (30), which includes a camera (54), which is configured to capture an image of an eye (25) of a patient, a laser (48), which is configured to emit pulses of laser radiation, and beam conditioning and scanning optics (49, 50), which are configured to focus and direct the laser radiation to impinge on an anterior surface of the eye. A controller (44) is configured to analyze the image so as to identify a limbus of the eye, and to control the optical unit so that the laser radiation impinges on a set of one or more locations on the anterior surface of the eye that are in a vicinity of the limbus with a pulse duration and an energy selected so as to stem cells at the one or more locations.
