Abstract

The present invention relates to a device for the selective withdrawal of blood samples from two sections of a line and for the injection of drugs into the blood itself, which has the peculiarity of comprising, operating in a seat provided with three connectors, a selector member three-way suitable for selectively putting two of the aforementioned fittings into communication following a manual actuation by an operator. The first fitting is suitable for receiving a line connected to an arterial blood sampling section, the second fitting is connected, through a conduit, at the base of a well open at the top and adapted to receive a line connected to a venous blood sampling section, and the third connector comprises a one-way valve in the direction away from said connector and is connected, through a conduit , at the base of a well open at the top and shaped in such a way as to allow the insertion of a syringe for taking blood samples.

It is known that the performance of many surgical interventions requires the presence of an extracorporeal blood circuit in which various devices are inserted, such as an oxygenator, very typically. During the procedure, the condition of the blood entering and exiting these devices, that is, the blood that operators usually call venous and arterial, respectively, is monitored. For this purpose, there are devices on the market that allow for the collection of venous and arterial blood, depending on the needs. These devices also allow for another operation that is often necessary during the procedure, namely the injection of drugs into the blood. Many of the known devices essentially comprise a connection for a syringe intended for taking blood samples, and another connection for a syringe intended for injecting drugs, these connections being connected by three-way taps in series, and these devices also -3very widespread are not free from some disadvantageous characteristics. First of all, these devices present a certain difficulty in operating with multiple taps to determine the desired functional conditions, and connected to this difficulty is the particular possibility of operating errors that can lead to blood leaking from the device. The aim of the present invention is to create a device for the selective collection of blood samples from two sections of a line and for the injection of drugs into the blood itself, in which the predisposition to create the desired functional conditions is obtained by operating on a single organ with a single maneuver, and furthermore any possibility of blood leaking out is excluded. The proposed task is achieved by a device for the selective collection of blood samples from two sections of a line and for the injection of drugs into the blood itself, according to the invention, characterised by the fact that it comprises, operating in a seat equipped with three connections, a three-way selector organ suitable for selectively putting two of the said connections into communication following manual operation by an operator, -a first, connection being able to receive a line connected to an arterial blood sampling section; -4- a second fitting being connected via a conduit to the base of a well open at the top and shaped in such a way as to allow the insertion of a syringe for the injection of drugs, said well being equipped, again in correspondence with the base, with an attachment suitable for receiving a line connected to a venous blood sampling section, and there being present between the base and the top of the well a sealing surface operating in combination with a shutter which is pushed against it by the action of a spring and is shaped in such a way as to come into contact with a syringe which is inserted into the well, thus abandoning contact with said sealing surface;- a third connection, comprising a one-way valve in the direction away from said connection, being connected via a conduit to the base of a well open at the top and shaped in such a way as to allow the insertion of a syringe for taking blood samples, said well being equipped, again in correspondence with the base, with a connection suitable for receiving a line connected to a drain and equipped with a one-way valve in the direction towards said drain, there being present between the base and the top of the well a sealing surface operating in combination with a shutter which is pushed against it by the action of a spring and is shaped in such a way as to come into contact with a syringe which is inserted into the well; -5so as to abandon contact with the said sealing surface. Further features and advantages will become more apparent from the description of a preferred but not exclusive embodiment of the invention, illustrated by way of example and not by way of limitation in the attached drawings in which: -figure 1 represents a plan view of the invention; -figure 2 represents a side view of the invention; -figure 3 represents the section with the plane Ili-Ili of figure 1; -figure 4 represents the section with the IV-IV plane of figure 2; -figure 5 represents the section with the VV plane of figure 1; -figures 6 to 9 schematically represent the operational phases of the invention which will be illustrated in the description of the operation. With reference to the aforementioned figures 1 to 5, the seat equipped with the three connections 2,3,4 is globally indicated with 1, within which the three-way selector organ 5 operates, capable of selectively putting two of the said connections into communication following manual operation by an operator who grasps the fins 5a, as will be better explained in the description of the operation. In this case the three connections 2,3»4 are spaced an= -6regularly of 9θ°»β the three ways of the selector organ 5 are materialized by the T-shaped passage indicated with 5b. Connector 2 is intended to receive a line connected to an arterial blood sampling section, such as the outlet of an oxygenator. The fitting 3 is connected via the conduit 6 to the base of the well indicated globally with 7» which is open at the top 7a, is shaped at 7b in such a way as to allow the insertion of a syringe for the injection of drugs, and is equipped, again at the base, with the connection 7c suitable for receiving a line connected to a venous blood sampling section, such as could be for example the inlet of an oxygenator device». Between the base and the top of the well 7 there is the sealing surface 7d which operates in combination with the obturator 8 which is pushed against it by the action of the spring 9 and has an appendix 8a which allows it to come into contact with a syringe which is inserted into the cavity 7b of the well 7» so as to abandon contact with said surface 7d. We will return to this shutter 8 when talking about the functioning of the device; for now it is enough to note how it constitutes a plug designed to prevent any entry from the outside into the well 7 and into the line leading to it. no, when no syringe is inserted into the well itself. The connector 4 comprises the one-way valve 10 which allows the flow of blood only in the direction away from the connector itself, and is connected via the conduit 11 to the base of the well indicated globally with 12, which is open at the top 12a, is shaped at 12b so as to allow the insertion of a syringe for taking blood samples, and is equipped, again at the base, with the connection 12c suitable for receiving a line connected to a drain; within the connector 12c there is the one-way valve 12d which allows the flow of blood only towards the drain. Between the top and the base of the well 12 there is a sealing surface which works in combination with a shutter identical to the one present in the well 7, not shown in the figures. Returning to the selector organ 5, it is noted that it is equipped with the fork-shaped appendix 5c designed to allow, within its own area, the reading of indications placed on an underlying plate 1a integral with the seat 1 in correspondence with the various operating positions of the said selector organ: thus, for example, in the situation represented in figure 1, within the fork 5c the indication venous sample is read because the selector organ 5 is in the condition that It allows the collection of venous blood, but by rotating the selector 45° clockwise within the fork, the indication drug will be read because the selector itself is in the condition that allows the injection of drugs, and so on. The description of the device is completed by observing that the seat 1 and the wells 7 and 12 rest on the plate 13 which is equipped with containment means 14 of the lines not shown in the figure which allow the connection of the device with the blood sample collection sections and with the purge, when the said lines are not in operating condition. The operation of the device according to the invention is now described with reference to figures 6 to 9. Figure 6 shows the situation of venous blood sampling: a syringe 15 is inserted into the well 12 and the selector organ 5 is positioned so that the passage 5b puts in communication the connections 3 and 4 of the seat 1, as also shown in figure 4; it is almost needless to remember that the insertion of the syringe 15 into the well 12 caused the shutter present in said well to detach from its sealing seat. The operator begins the sampling by moving the plunger of the syringe 15 in the direction of the arrow A, and thus venous blood is drawn into the syringe itself through the line 16. -9following the path indicated by the arrows B: in this phase the one-way valve 10 is open and the one-way valve 12d is closed, so that the blood does not pass to the purge; note also that the blood cannot escape to the outside through the well 7 which is closed by the shutter 8. Obviously the blood drawn into the syringe 15 with the operation described is stagnant blood in the circuit, not good for sampling, and so the operator pushes the plunger of the syringe 15 in the direction of the arrow C causing the expulsion of the blood according to the arrow D through the line 17 which leads to the purge thanks to the instantaneous closing of the valve 10 and the simultaneous opening of the valve 12d. The operation is repeated as many times as necessary, until the blood drawn into the syringe 15 is considered a good sample, and at this point the syringe itself is extracted from the well 12 even if the selector organ 5 has not previously been brought to the "off" position but has instead remained in the sampling position, without this causing the blood to leak from the said well 12, and this is thanks to the fact that the shutter contained therein has taken over the act of disconnecting the syringe, the position in contact with the sealing surface. -10It is perhaps worth pausing here for a moment to consider the fact that the presence of the said shutter constitutes an operational safety against the leakage of blood from the well 12 not only in the described phase of disconnection of the syringe 15 at the end of the sampling, but also in the phase of insertion of the syringe itself which can be carried out without problems even if the selector organ 5 has been placed in the sampling condition before the said insertion occurs, and naturally also during the phases of manoeuvring the syringe plunger which can easily cause temporary detachments of the syringe itself from the well. Figure 7 shows the situation of arterial blood sampling, and everything said regarding venous blood sampling applies here, except for the different position of the selector organ 5 which is now arranged in such a way that the passage 5b puts in communication the connections 2 and 4 of the seat 1, thus allowing the sampling of arterial blood from line 18 according to the arrows E. Figure 8 shows the situation of drug injection into the blood: a syringe 19 filled with drug is inserted into the well 7, with consequent abandonment of its sealing surface by the shutter 8, and the selector organ 5 is positioned so that the passage 5b is out of correspondence with the connections present in seat 1: this is the position identified by the word drug on plate 1a. To inject the drug, the operator moves the plunger of the syringe 19 in the direction of the arrow P, thus causing the drug to be injected into the line 16 according to the arrow G. This phase must notoriously be followed by a phase, called shunt, in which arterial blood invades the line 16 to cause the complete removal of the drug from the line itself, and this phase is the one that is achieved with the arrangement in figure 9: the syringe 19 has been removed without using any particular precaution because the obturator δ instantly closes the well 7 towards the outside, thus avoiding blood leaks, and the selector organ 5 is arranged in such a way that the passage 5b puts in communication the connections 2 and 3 of the seat 11 and then, thanks to the pressure with which the arterial blood is equipped, the desired circulation of the same is created according to the arrows H from the arterial line 18 to the venous line 16. From all the above, the great simplicity of the invention, both in terms of construction and function, is evident: with regard to the latter, it is sufficient to observe that the predisposition of the device to carry out each of the possible operations requires the operator to perform only one manoeuvre on a -12only organ, which is the selecting organ 5» and this situation is highly positive both with regard to operating speed and safety in avoiding errors. Another positive feature of the invention that we wish to highlight is the fact that any possibility of blood leaking from the device is excluded, whatever the situation that occurs following maneuvers by the operator. The invention described is susceptible to numerous modifications and variations, all of which fall within the scope of the inventive concept; furthermore, all the details may be replaced with other technically equivalent elements. In the practical implementation of the invention, the materials used, as well as the shapes and dimensions, may be any according to the needs.

Claims

CLAIMS 1) Device for the selective collection of blood samples from two sections of a line and for the injection of drugs into the blood itself, characterised by the fact that it comprises, operating in a seat equipped with three connections, a three-way selector organ suitable for selectively putting two of the said connections into communication following manual operation by an operator, - a first connection being suitable for receiving a line connected to an arterial blood collection section;-13-a second fitting being connected by means of a conduit to the base of a well open at the top and shaped in such a way as to allow the insertion of a syringe for the injection of drugs, said well being equipped, again in correspondence with the base, with an attachment suitable for receiving a line connected to a venous blood sampling section, and there being present between the base and the top of the well a sealing surface operating in combination with a shutter which is pushed against it by the action of a spring and is shaped in such a way as to come into contact with a syringe which is inserted into the well, thus abandoning contact with said sealing surface;- a third fitting, comprising a one-way valve in the direction away from said fitting, being connected via a conduit to the base of a well open at the top and shaped in such a way as to allow the insertion of a syringe for taking blood samples, said well being equipped, again in correspondence with the base, with a connection suitable for receiving a line connected to a drain and equipped with a one-way valve in the direction towards said drain, there being present between the base and the top of the well a sealing surface operating in combination with a shutter which is pushed against it by the action of a spring and is shaped in such a way as to come into contact with a syringe which is inserted into the well, thus abandoning contact with said sealing surface.; 2) Device according to claim 1, characterised in that the said seat is equipped with three connections spaced angularly at 90°, the selector member being equipped with a T-shaped passage which creates the three ways suitable for selectively putting two of the said connections into communication. 3) Device according to one or more of the preceding claims, characterised in that the selecting organ is equipped with gripping fins for an operator and a fork-shaped appendage designed to allow the reading within its own area of ​​indications placed on an underlying plate integral with the seat corresponding to the operating positions of said selecting organ. 4) Device according to one or more of the preceding claims, characterised by the fact that it comprises a support plate for the said seat of the selecting organ and for the said wells, and also equipped with means for containing, in the non-operational phase, the connection lines with the sample collection sections and with the purge. 5) Device for the selective collection of blood samples from two sections of a line and for the injection of drugs into the blood itself, characterised by the fact that it comprises -15one or more of the features described and / or illustrated
