Description

Technology Field

[0001] The present disclosure relates to a method for manufacturing a porous composite material comprising silica aerogel.

[0002] [Explanation of government-supported R&D]

[0003] This research was conducted under the supervision of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology and supported by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups’ Tech-Bridge Commercialization Technology Development Project (Development of flame-retardant / flexible / insulating polymer composite materials based on silica aerogel, Project No.: 2420000560), the National Research Council of Science and Technology’s Research Operation Support Project (Development of lightweight platform technology for recyclable future air mobility structural materials and components, Project No.: 2710024158), and the Ministry of Science and ICT’s Creative Convergence Research Project (Development of technology for fabricating high-impregnation prepreg based on surface-modified lignin carbon fiber). Background Technology

[0004] Aerogels possess a nanoporous structure with a porosity of over 90% and a specific surface area of several hundred to 1,000 m² 2 It is a transparent or translucent ultra-low density advanced material with a density of approximately 1 / g. As such, aerogels are applied in various fields as ultrafine, porous, low-density materials, such as catalyst supports, thermal insulation, noise shielding, and particle accelerators.

[0005] In particular, silica aerogel is a highly efficient super-insulating material that can be used in refrigerators, freezers, and heat storage devices due to its high light transmittance and extremely low thermal conductivity. However, silica aerogel, which is generally manufactured in powder or bead form, exhibits very weak strength due to its high brittleness, easily breaking even under minor impacts. Furthermore, because it is difficult to process into various thicknesses and shapes, its application as an insulating material is currently very challenging despite its excellent thermal insulation properties.

[0006] Aerogels are primarily manufactured through a supercritical drying process, but since the supercritical process is carried out at high temperature and pressure, it contributes to increased manufacturing costs. Furthermore, aerogels manufactured through the supercritical process are 99% filled with air in the form of a framework. When mixing the aerogel with other reactants, solvents or solutes penetrate into the interior of the aerogel, increasing the viscosity of the compound and making mixing impossible. Consequently, it is difficult to composite or mix with other materials, and there is a problem in that the porous aerogel cannot exhibit its characteristics.

[0007] To address these issues, technologies are being attempted to manufacture aerogels in the form of blanket-type aerogels or expanding packs by filling nonwoven fabrics with aerogel; however, aerogels manufactured in this way have the problem of degrading the properties of the aerogel itself. [0090] From the results of Figures 2a and 2b, it was confirmed that in the case of the composite material of porous polyetherimide and silica aerogel, the silica aerogel is well dispersed in the pores and on the surface of the polyetherimide.

[0092] Test Example 3: Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA)

[0093] For each of the above comparative examples and examples 1 to 3, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was performed using a TA Q500 (TA Instrument) at a temperature range of 30-800℃ under a condition of 10℃ / min, and the results are shown in Fig. 3.

[0094] From the results of Figure 3, it was confirmed that in the case of the comparative example porous polyetherimide, the weight decreased rapidly in the range of 500 to 600°C, whereas in the case of the example, the slope of the weight decrease became gentler as the silica aerogel content increased. In other words, it was confirmed that in the case of the example, heat resistance improved as the silica aerogel content increased.

[0096] Test Example 4: Heat Release Rate (HRR) Analysis

[0097] Heat release rate (HRR) analysis was performed for each of the above comparative examples and examples 1 to 3. Specifically, the heat release rate (HRR) analysis was performed using a micro combustion calorimeter (MCC) manufactured by Fire Testing Technology (FFT, UK), and flame retardancy was evaluated by assessing the total heat release (THR) and maximum heat release rate (pHRR), and the results are shown in Figure 4.

[0098] From the results of Figure 4, it was confirmed that the heat release rate of the porous polyetherimide in the comparative example was significantly high in the range of 500 to 600°C, whereas in the example, the amount of heat released decreased significantly as the content of silica aerogel increased, and thus excellent flame retardancy was exhibited.

[0100] Test Example 5: Confirmation of Flame Retardant Properties

[0101] Each of the film-shaped specimens prepared in the above Comparative Example and Examples 1 to 3 was burned to confirm flame-retardant properties. The results of visually checking whether the specimens deformed are shown in FIGS. 5a to 5d (Fig. 5a: Comparative Example, Fig. 5b: PEI / SI 10, Fig. 5c: PEI / SI 30, Fig. 5d: PEI / SI 50), and the results of scanning electron microscope (SEM) examination of the cross-section of each specimen after flame treatment are shown in FIGS. 6a to 6d (Fig. 6a: Comparative Example, Fig. 6b: PEI / SI 10, Fig. 6c: PEI / SI 30, Fig. 6d: PEI / SI 50).

[0102] From the results of FIGS. 5a to 5d and FIGS. 6a to 6d, it was confirmed that in the case of the comparative example, the flame retardancy was significantly reduced and the specimen was greatly deformed, whereas in the case of the example, as the content of silica aerogel increased, the specimen was maintained without deformation and the flame retardancy was greatly increased.

[0104] Test Example 6: Thermal Conductivity Analysis

[0105] The thermal conductivity of each film-type specimen prepared in the above Comparative Example and Examples 1 to 3 was measured according to ASTM D7984, and the results are shown in Table 1 below.

[0106] PEI PEI / SI 10 PEI / SI 30 PEI / SI 50 Thermal conductivity (W / mK) 0.0537 0.0518 0.0472 0.0465

[0107] From the results of Table 1, it was confirmed that the thermal conductivity of the composite materials of Examples 1 to 3 is lower than that of the comparative example, and in particular, as the content of silica aerogel increases, the thermal conductivity decreases significantly, further improving the thermal insulation performance.

[0108] Test Example 7: Density Measurement

[0109] The apparent density of each film-shaped specimen prepared in the above Comparative Example and Examples 1 to 3 was calculated by measuring the weight and volume according to the ASTM D1622 method. Specifically, the length, width, and height of each of the five specimens prepared in the above Comparative Example and Examples 1 to 3 were measured, and the average density of the five specimens was calculated, and the results are shown in Table 2 below.

[0110] PEI PEI / SI 10 PEI / SI 30 PEI / SI 50 Average density (g / cm³) 3 ) 0.35 0.34 0.27 0.21

[0111] From the results in Table 2, the density of the film material manufactured by simply melting and processing commonly used polyetherimide is 1.27 g / cm³ 3 It is known that, however, in the case of the porous polyetherimide of the comparative example, a pore structure is introduced through a phase transition technique as in one embodiment of the present invention, thereby reducing the density, and in the case of Examples 1 to 3, it was confirmed that more effective weight reduction is possible as the silica aerogel content increases.

[0112] From the results of Test Examples 1 to 7 above, it was confirmed that the porous composite material according to one embodiment of the present invention exhibits excellent lightness, thermal insulation, and flame retardancy, and thus has excellent utility as a thermal insulation material.
