Abstract
Description
Technology Field
[0001] The present invention relates to a battery cell in which an electrode assembly is accommodated between a first outer material and a second outer material. Background Technology
[0002] Recently, secondary batteries are attracting attention as a power source for electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), which are being proposed as a solution to address air pollution caused by conventional gasoline and diesel vehicles that use fossil fuels.
[0003] While small mobile devices use one or two or three rechargeable batteries, medium to large devices such as electric vehicles utilize battery modules consisting of multiple electrically connected rechargeable batteries or battery packs consisting of multiple battery modules electrically connected to each other due to the need for high output and large capacity.
[0004] Among currently commercialized rechargeable batteries, the lithium-ion battery is one of the most sought-after. Lithium-ion batteries can be classified into can, prismatic, and pouch types depending on the form of the casing. Among these, pouch-type batteries are widely used in medium to large-sized battery modules due to their high energy density and ease of stacking.
[0005] Meanwhile, as the demand for secondary battery modules installed in vehicles has recently increased, customer requirements for safety are on the rise. However, customers are demanding higher energy density for battery cells within the limited space of the module; this, however, leads to a problem where safety risks related to battery cell ignition and explosion also increase.
[0006] Generally, a pouch-type battery cell has a structure in which an electrode assembly is housed in a pouch-type battery case and a sealing portion is formed on the edge of the battery case. If the battery cell exceeds a critical temperature due to abnormal heat generation or the like, the temperature and internal pressure rise rapidly, potentially leading to an explosion. Consequently, thermal runaway may occur, in which flames rapidly spread to surrounding battery cells.
[0007] To prevent or sufficiently delay such thermal runaway, it is necessary to implement a sealing part with high heat resistance and sealing strength; to this end, a method has been devised to implement sealing by welding the metal layer of a pouch-type battery cell. However, conventionally, there was the inconvenience of having to remove the outer resin layer of the welding area in order to weld the metal layer. The problem to be solved
[0008] The problem that the present invention aims to solve is to provide a battery cell with improved appearance quality and safety. means of solving the problem
[0009] A battery cell according to an embodiment of the present invention may include: an electrode assembly; a first outer material and a second outer material coupled with the electrode assembly in between; a rivet penetrating the first outer material and electrically connected to the electrode assembly; and an insulating member disposed between the inner surface of the second outer material and the rivet.
[0010] The first exterior material may include a storage portion formed by recessing so as to accommodate the electrode assembly; and a side molding portion formed by recessing in a direction parallel to the storage portion and overlapping with the insulating member, where the rivet is disposed.
[0011] The above-mentioned insulating member can be accommodated inside the side molding portion.
[0012] The above-mentioned side molding portion may have a depth dimension smaller than that of the above-mentioned storage portion.
[0013] The above-mentioned side molding portions may be provided with a pair located on both sides with the storage portion in between.
[0014] The above-mentioned side molding portion extends parallel to the width direction of the storage portion, and the length dimension of the above-mentioned side molding portion may be smaller than the width dimension of the storage portion.
[0015] The above second exterior material may have a flat shape.
[0016] The above battery cell may further include a welded portion extending along the edges of the first and second outer materials, formed by welding the metal layer of the first outer material and the metal layer of the second outer material together.
[0017] The battery cell may further include a venting guide located on a portion of the edges of the first outer material and the second outer material. The venting guide may be formed by unwelding the metal layer of the first outer material and the metal layer of the second outer material, or by welding them more weakly than the welded portion.
[0018] The above rivet may include a head located on the outer side of the first exterior material; and a body protruding from the head and extending toward the insulating member by penetrating the first exterior material.
[0019] The above insulating member can be connected to the above rivet.
[0020] A groove into which the rivet is inserted may be formed in the above-mentioned insulating member.
[0021] The above-mentioned insulating member can be adhered to the inner surface of at least one of the first exterior material and the second exterior material.
[0022] The first and second exterior materials may include a storage portion formed by recessing so as to accommodate the electrode assembly; and a side molding portion formed by recessing in a direction parallel to the storage portion and overlapping with the insulating member, on which the rivet is disposed. Effects of the invention
[0023] According to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, an insulating member may be disposed between the inner surface of the second exterior material and the rivet. By doing so, the insulating member can reduce the transfer of heat generated at the rivet to the second exterior material.
[0024] In addition, the insulating member can reliably prevent deformation or damage to the second exterior material caused by rivets.
[0025] In addition, the insulating member can minimize the discharge of gas or flames that may occur due to abnormal operation of the electrode assembly toward the rivet.
[0026] In addition to this, the configurations according to the preferred embodiments of the present invention may include effects that are easily predictable by those skilled in the art. Brief explanation of the drawing

[0031] Each component of a secondary battery according to one embodiment of the present invention is schematically illustrated in the drawing, and the size or thickness of the lines of the components may be expressed somewhat exaggerated for ease of understanding.
[0032] FIG. 1 is an assembly diagram of a battery cell according to one embodiment of the present invention, FIG. 2 is a plan view of a battery cell according to one embodiment of the present invention, FIG. 3 is a cross-sectional view along A-A' of FIG. 2, and FIG. 4 is a cross-sectional view of a battery cell according to a comparative example.
[0033] For convenience of explanation, the rivet (130), weld (140), and insulation member (190) to be described later are not shown in FIG. 1.
[0034] A battery cell according to one embodiment of the present invention may include a first outer material (110), a second outer material (120), and an electrode assembly (200).
[0035] The electrode assembly (200) may include an anode, a cathode, and a separator interposed between the anode and the cathode to insulate them. The type of electrode assembly (200) is not limited. As an example, the electrode assembly (200) may be a stacked electrode assembly in which an anode and a cathode are alternately stacked with a separator in between. As another example, the electrode assembly (200) may be a jellyroll-type electrode assembly in which sheet-type anodes and cathodes are wound together with a separator in between.
[0036] The first outer material (110) and the second outer material (120) can be sealed to each other with the electrode assembly (200) in between. The first outer material (110) and the second outer material (120) can be sealed in a state accommodating the electrode assembly (200) to form a battery case.
[0037] In the following, as illustrated in FIG. 1, the case in which the first exterior material (110) and the second exterior material (120) are each manufactured as separate components will be described as an example. In this case, the first exterior material (110) and the second exterior material (120) can be sealed on four sides.
[0038] However, it is not limited to this, and it is also possible for the first exterior material (110) and the second exterior material (120) to be a single member in which one side of each member is connected to a folding part. In this case, the first exterior material (110) and the second exterior material (120) may be sealed on three sides excluding the folding part. Since this is a well-known technology, a detailed explanation is omitted.
[0039] Each of the first exterior material (110) and the second exterior material (120) may include a resin layer forming an inner surface and a metal layer located on the outer side of the resin layer. Each of the first exterior material (110) and the second exterior material (120) may be manufactured by molding a laminate sheet comprising the resin layer and the metal layer.
[0040] For example, the resin layer may have a PP (Polypropylene) material, and the metal layer may include at least one material among stainless steel (STS), copper, and titanium. Since the melting points of stainless steel, copper, and titanium are higher than 1000 degrees Celsius, the first outer material (110) and the second outer material (120) may have high heat resistance compared to the melting point of aluminum (Al), which was used in conventional battery cells, which is approximately 660 degrees Celsius.
[0041] However, this is not limited thereto, and those skilled in the art may appropriately select the materials of the resin layer and metal layer commonly used in the field of pouch-type secondary batteries.
[0042] The first outer material (110) and the second outer material (120) may provide a storage space capable of accommodating the electrode assembly (200). The first outer material (110) and the second outer material (120) may have a pouch shape overall, but are not limited thereto.
[0043] More specifically, the first outer material (110) may include a storage portion (C1) that accommodates an electrode assembly (200). The storage portion (C1) may be formed by a recess. The storage portion (C1) may define a storage space in which the electrode assembly (200) is accommodated.
[0044] Additionally, the first exterior material (110) may include a side molded portion (C2). The side molded portion (C2) may be a portion where the rivet (130) described later is placed. The side molded portion (C2) may be recessed in a direction parallel to the storage portion (C1).
[0045] A pair of side molding sections (C2) may be provided on both sides with the storage section (C1) in between. However, this is not limited thereto, and if a pair of rivets (130) are located on one side of the electrode assembly (200), it may be possible to provide only a single side molding section (C2).
[0046] The depth dimension of the side molding portion (C2) may be smaller than the depth dimension of the storage portion (C1). The side molding portion (C2) may have a step difference with the storage portion (C1).
[0047] Referring to FIG. 2, the side molding portion (C2) may be extended parallel to the width direction of the storage portion (C1). Here, the length dimension (L) of the side molding portion (C2) may be smaller than the width dimension (W) of the storage portion (C1). This prevents the volume of the battery cell from becoming unnecessarily large and increases the energy density.
[0048] In the case of the present embodiment, the second exterior material (120) may have a flat shape. That is, the first exterior material (110) includes a storage portion (C1) and a side molding portion (C2), and the second exterior material (120) may cover the storage portion (C1) and the side molding portion (C2) of the first exterior material (110). However, it is not limited thereto. The first exterior material (110) and the second exterior material (120) may each include a storage portion (C1) and a side molding portion (C2).
[0049] The portion where the first exterior material (110) and the second exterior material (120) come into contact with each other can be named a terrace portion (T). That is, the battery cell may include a terrace portion (T).
[0050] The terrace portion (T) of the first exterior material (110) may refer to an area located around the perimeter of the storage portion (C1). The side molding portion (C2) may be molded in the terrace portion (T). The terrace portion (T) of the second exterior material (120) may refer to an area facing the terrace portion (T) of the first exterior material (110).
[0051] The terrace portions (T) of the first exterior material (110) and the second exterior material (120) can be sealed. Thus, the electrode assembly (200) can be accommodated between the first exterior material (110) and the second exterior material (120).
[0052] The first outer layer (110) and the second outer layer (120) can be welded to each other's metal layers with the electrode assembly (200) in between. More specifically, at the terrace portion (T), each metal layer of the first outer layer (110) and the second outer layer (120) can be welded to each other, and a weld (140) can be formed. That is, the battery cell can include a weld (140). The weld (140) can extend along the edges of the first outer layer (110) and the second outer layer (120).
[0053] In the following, an example is given in which each metal layer of the first exterior material (110) and the second exterior material (120) is welded through a separate metal member, such as a metal cover. That is, the drawing symbol of the metal cover is indicated as '140', the same as the welded part (140). However, this is not limited thereto, and it is also possible for each metal layer of the first exterior material (110) and the second exterior material (120) to be directly welded to form the welded part (140).
[0054] The terrace section (T) may include a first terrace section (T1) where the rivet (130) is located, and a second terrace section (T2) extending in a direction different from the first terrace section (T1). That is, the side molding section (C2) may be located on the first terrace section (T1). For example, the first terrace section (T1) may be located on the short side of the battery cell, and the second terrace section (T2) may be located on the long side of the battery cell.
[0055] The resin layers forming the innermost layer of the first exterior material (110) and the second exterior material (120) in the terrace section (T) can be sealed together by heat fusion.
[0056] Meanwhile, the metal cover (140) may include a cover portion (141), a first bend portion (142), and a second bend portion (143).
[0057] The cover portion (141) may face the end of the terrace portion (T). The cover portion (141) may come into contact with the end of the terrace portion (T) or cover it at a predetermined distance.
[0058] The first bend portion (142) is bent at one end of the cover portion (141) and can be welded to the metal layer of the first exterior material (110). The second bend portion (143) is bent at the other end of the cover portion (141) and can be welded to the metal layer of the second exterior material (120).
[0059] Since the metal cover (140) is welded to the metal layer, it can have a higher sealing strength than the sealing of the resin layer by heat fusion. As a result, the sealing strength of the battery cell can be significantly increased.
[0060] The metal cover (140) may extend along the terrace portion (T). The metal cover (140) may be formed along the perimeter of the battery cell.
[0061] The battery cell may include a venting guide (170) located on a portion of the edge of the first outer material (110) and the second outer material (120). More specifically, along the circumferential direction of the battery cell, the weld (140) may be located on a portion of the terrace portion (T), and the venting guide (170) may be located on another portion of the terrace portion (T).
[0062] The venting guide (170) can be formed by unwelding the metal layer of the first exterior material (110) and the metal layer of the second exterior material (120) or welding them more weakly than the welded portion (140).
[0063] At least one venting guide (170) may be provided along the circumference of the battery cell. The battery cell has the advantage of being able to easily design the degree to which gas is discharged from the battery cell by adjusting the length, number, position, etc. of the venting guide (170).
[0064] In the venting guide (170), the metal layers of the first outer material (110) and the second outer material (120) are not welded or are only partially welded, so if the internal pressure of the battery cell rises above a certain level, the sealing between the first outer material (110) and the second outer material (120) can be easily destroyed. At this time, gas or flame inside the battery cell can be discharged to the outside of the battery cell through the venting guide (170).
[0065] Directional venting, in which gas is discharged in a preset direction, can be implemented by the venting induction section (170). This prevents the battery cell from exploding and prevents thermal runaway, in which flames spread to other surrounding battery cells due to the explosion.
[0066] The weld section (140) may extend along a portion of the first terrace section (T1) and the second terrace section (T2). A venting guide section (170) may be provided on another portion of the second terrace section (T2). That is, the venting guide section (170) may be located on the second terrace section (T2).
[0067] In this regard, the first terrace section (T1) is equipped with a rivet (130) to be described later, and since the rivet (130) is a point where an electrical connection is made, it may be more vulnerable to flames. Therefore, it may be more advantageous in terms of preventing thermal runaway to provide a venting induction section (170) in the second terrace section (T2).
[0068] Meanwhile, the battery cell may include a rivet (130) and an insulating member (190).
[0069] The rivet (130) can penetrate the first outer material (110) and be electrically connected to the electrode assembly (200). More specifically, the rivet (130) can penetrate the side molding portion (C2). The rivet (130) can be electrically connected to the electrode tab of the electrode assembly (200).
[0070] Since the rivet (130) does not protrude outward through the end of the first terrace section (T), a weld (140) can be formed at the end of the first terrace section (T1). Therefore, the sealing performance of the battery cell can be improved.
[0071] A pair of rivets (130) may be provided. A pair of rivets (130) may include a positive rivet electrically connected to the positive tab of the electrode assembly (200) and a negative rivet electrically connected to the negative tab.
[0072] A pair of rivets (130) may be placed on opposite side molding sections (C2) with the cup section (C1) in between. However, this is not limited thereto, and it may also be possible for a pair of rivets (130) to be located on the same side molding section (C2).
[0073] The electrode assembly (200) and the rivet (130) can be electrically connected to each other through a connecting plate (210). The connecting plate (210) can be located inside the battery cell. That is, the connecting plate (210) can be placed between the first outer material (110) and the second outer material (120).
[0074] The electrode tab (not shown) of the electrode assembly (200) can be connected to the connecting plate (210) by welding. For example, a hole (210a) (see FIG. 5) through which the body (132) of the rivet (130) passes can be formed in the connecting plate (210).
[0075] By placing the rivet (130) in the side molding portion (C2), interference between the rivet (130) and the second outer material (120) can be prevented. In this regard, referring to FIG. 4, the battery cell according to the comparative example may not include the side molding portion (C2) in the first outer material (110). In this case, the rivet (130) may interfere with the second outer material (120), and as a result, the second outer material (120) may be deformed, causing a problem in which a protrusion (D) occurs. The battery cell according to one embodiment of the present invention can solve this problem by including the side molding portion (C2) in which the rivet (120) is placed in the first outer material (110).
[0076] Meanwhile, an insulating member (190) may be placed between the inner surface of the second exterior material (120) and the rivet (130). Since the material of the insulating member (190) is a well-known technology, a detailed description is omitted. The insulating member (190) can reduce the transfer of heat generated from the rivet (130) to the second exterior material (120). In addition, the insulating member (190) can more reliably prevent deformation or damage to the second exterior material (120) caused by the rivet (130).
[0077] In addition, since the insulating member (190) is placed within the first terrace section (T1) where the side molding section (C1) is molded, the discharge of gas or flame that may occur due to abnormal operation of the electrode assembly (200) toward the first terrace section (T1) can be minimized, and the gas or flame can be guided to be discharged toward the venting guide section (170) located in the second terrace section (T2). That is, the insulating member (190) can minimize the discharge of gas or flame toward the rivet (130).
[0078] The insulating member (190) may overlap with the side molding portion (C2) in a direction parallel to the thickness direction of the electrode assembly (200). More specifically, the insulating member (190) may be accommodated inside the side molding portion (C2). That is, the side molding portion (C2) of the first exterior material (110) may define a space in which a part of the rivet (130) and the insulating member (190) are accommodated.
[0079] The insulating member (190) can be adhered to the inner surface of at least one of the first exterior material (110) and the second exterior material (120). For example, the insulating member (190) can be attached to the inner surface of the second exterior material (120). Thus, the insulating member (190) can be fixed in position within the side molding portion (C2).
[0080] Figure 5 is an enlarged view showing the rivet and its surroundings illustrated in Figure 3.
[0081] Each rivet (130) may include a head (131) located on the outside of the first exterior material (110), and a body (132) that protrudes from the head (131), penetrates the first exterior material (110), and extends toward the insulating member (190). Each rivet (130) may further include a leg (133) that protrudes from the body (132) and is bent in a radially outward direction of the body (132).
[0082] The above-described connecting plate (210) can be supported by the leg (133) of the rivet (130).
[0083] More specifically, before the leg (133) of the rivet (130) is bent, the body (132) of the rivet (130) can be inserted into the hole (210a) of the connecting plate (210). Afterward, the leg (133) of the rivet (130) can be bent outward to support the connecting plate (210). This prevents the connection between the connecting plate (210) and the rivet (130) from being severed.
[0084] The battery cell may include a gasket (180) surrounding a portion of the rivet (130). More specifically, the gasket (180) may include a first gasket (181) provided between the metal layer of the first outer material (110) and the rivet (130), and a second gasket (182) provided between the first outer material (110) and the connecting plate (210).
[0085] The gasket (180) may have an insulating material. The first gasket (181) may insulate the metal layer of the first outer material (110) and the rivet (130) from each other. The second gasket (182) may insulate the connecting plate (210) and the metal layer of the first outer material (110) from each other.
[0086] At least one of the first gasket (181) and the second gasket (182) can insulate the outer circumference of the body (132) of the rivet (130) and the metal layer of the first outer material (110).
[0087] The gasket (180) may have an elastic material such as rubber, silicone, or urethane. Accordingly, the gasket (180) can maintain the seal of the portion penetrated by the rivet (130) in the first exterior material (110). In addition, it can prevent the first exterior material (110) from being damaged when the rivet (130) is installed.
[0088] The battery cell may further include a reinforcing plate (183) positioned between the leg (133) of the rivet (130) and the connecting plate (210). The reinforcing plate (183) can prevent the connecting plate (210) from being damaged or deformed when the leg (133) of the rivet (130) is bent outward.
[0089] Meanwhile, the insulating member (190) can be connected to the rivet (130). Thus, the positions of the rivet (130) and the insulating member (190) can be fixed to each other. For example, a groove (191) into which the rivet (130) is inserted can be formed in the insulating member (190). The inner end of the rivet (130) can be inserted into the groove (191) of the insulating member (190). In this way, the length of the rivet (130) can be formed long without the second exterior material (120) being deformed.
[0090] FIG. 5 illustrates a case in which the leg (133) of a rivet (130) is inserted into the groove (191) of an insulating member (190). However, this is not limited thereto, and the rivet (130) may not include the leg (133), and the body (132) of the rivet (130) may be inserted into the groove (191) of the insulating member (190). In this case, the reinforcing plate (183) may not be provided, and the connecting plate (210) may be fixed between the gasket (180) and the insulating member (190).
[0091] FIG. 6 is a cross-sectional view of a battery cell according to another embodiment of the present invention.
[0092] Below, details that overlap with the previously explained content will be omitted, and the focus will be on the differences.
[0093] A battery cell according to another embodiment of the present invention may include a storage portion (C1) and a side molding portion (C2), similar to the first exterior material (110), instead of the second exterior material (120) having a flat shape.
[0094] Each storage section (C1) of the first outer material (110) and the second outer material (120) can face each other and together define a space in which an electrode assembly (200) is stored. Therefore, an electrode assembly (200) with a larger capacity than the previously described embodiment can be accommodated.
[0095] The side molding portion (C2) of the first exterior material (110) and the side molding portion (C2) of the second exterior material (120) may face each other and together define a space in which a part of a rivet (130) and an insulating member (190) are accommodated. For example, a part of the rivet (130) may be accommodated in the side molding portion (C2) of the first exterior material (110), and the insulating member (190) may be accommodated in the side molding portion (C2) of the second exterior material (120). Thus, a longer rivet (130) and a thicker insulating member (190) can be accommodated than in the previously described embodiment.
[0096] The above description is merely an illustrative explanation of the technical concept of the present invention, and those skilled in the art to which the present invention pertains will be able to make various modifications and variations within the scope of the essential characteristics of the present invention.
[0097] Accordingly, the embodiments disclosed in this invention are intended to explain, not limit, the technical concept of the invention, and the scope of the technical concept of the invention is not limited by these embodiments.
[0098] The scope of protection of the present invention shall be interpreted by the claims below, and all technical ideas within an equivalent scope shall be interpreted as being included within the scope of rights of the present invention. Explanation of the symbols
