Abstract
Description
Technology Field
[0001] The present invention relates to an electromagnetic pulse gun system, and more specifically, to a high-power microwave (HPM) based electromagnetic pulse (EMP) gun system using a virtual cathode oscillator (Vircator). Background Technology
[0002] As demonstrated in the conflicts between Ukraine and Russia or Israel and Hamas, the nature of recent warfare is shifting toward drone attacks that place importance on "drone threat factors." The recent frequent incursions by North Korean garbage balloons also pose a risk in the same context as drones. It is necessary to prepare for the possibility of large-scale use of drones, unmanned aerial vehicles, and garbage balloons, and innovative countermeasures are required, starting with defensive measures.
[0003] As a countermeasure against drones, soft kill methods involving jamming and / or deception have the problem of being evasible by anti-jamming and autonomous flight algorithms. Conventional weapon systems are not applicable in urban areas due to concerns about military and civilian damage caused by falling projectiles.
[0004] Laser countermeasures are capable of a hard kill but are expensive and suitable for precision strikes, making them unsuitable for swarm drones due to their one-on-one engagement method.
[0005] Published Patent No. 10-2023-0134219 describes a technology for using a drone jammer that disrupts drone intrusion by attaching it to a firearm. However, in the case of attack drones, such as suicide bomb drone swarms equipped with bombs, disruption (soft kill) is not sufficient for a response, and it is necessary to preemptively inflict permanent damage (hard kill). This is also true for responses to guided weapons.
[0006] Published Patent No. 10-2019-0108081 describes a technology for launching an allied interceptor drone to target an enemy drone and bring the target drone down. This assumes a situation where an interceptor drone and a pilot are on standby, and therefore cannot be applied in cases where a large number of swarm drones, such as a suicide drone corps, are encountered without a separate drone. In other words, a means is required to rapidly neutralize enemy drones through an immediate response to a drone corps.
[0007] Registered Patent No. 10-2567261 describes a technology for detecting the location of enemy drones and intercepting them using lasers, anti-aircraft guns, guided missiles, etc. While anti-aircraft guns and guided missiles are applicable during wartime, they are difficult to apply against dung balloons or spy drones during non-wartime. Furthermore, they are difficult to apply when enemy drones appear in the trajectory of friendly ground forces during wartime. There is a need for a weapon that allows friendly forces to defend against enemy drones even at the soldier level, and such a weapon must be portable. However, laser weapons that are portable have a problem in that their range is short (at the level of several hundred meters) because they are affected by weather conditions, and when the laser travels beyond a certain distance, heat is generated, causing the laser to lose its inherent coherence and the beam to spread, weakening its offensive firepower. The problem to be solved
[0008] The objective of the present invention is to provide a directional high-energy EMP (Electromagnetic pulse) generation technology capable of implementing both non-lethal soft-kill and hard-kill methods as an alternative to overcome the limitations of conventional technology.
[0009] The objective of the present invention is to provide a drone neutralization gun system capable of immediately responding to enemy drones and permanently damaging them.
[0010] Another objective of the present invention is to provide a drone interception gun system capable of intercepting an enemy drone even when the enemy drone is located several kilometers away from the ground.
[0011] Another objective of the present invention is to provide a drone interception gun system capable of neutralizing multiple drones in a predetermined area at once when enemy drones attack in a corps.

[0043] In addition, the electromagnetic pulse gun based on the virtual cathode oscillator of the present invention can have a beam width of about 3° using an antenna or a radiation angle of about 3° and can cover a significant area because it has an effective range of about several km, and can neutralize a drone swarm by enabling continuous firing in burst mode with a firing rate of 5 to 10 times or more per second. Specific details for implementing the invention
[0048] Hereinafter, preferred embodiments of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the attached drawings.
[0049] Current drone defense systems primarily employ soft-kill methods, such as jamming drone control communication frequencies and inducing mis-flights through GPS signal deception; however, these can be evaded using anti-jamming and autonomous flight algorithms. In the case of hard-kill laser weapons, which have recently become a major issue, there are limitations to neutralizing swarms of drones because they require precision strikes on targets within seconds. Furthermore, due to the nature of lasers, performance can degrade depending on atmospheric conditions, and attacks can be evaded by exploiting laser reflection properties. Additionally, physical responses using conventional weapons (such as anti-aircraft guns or live ammunition attacks from helicopters) may result in casualties among friendly forces or civilians due to falling projectiles.
[0050] As an alternative to overcome the limitations of such existing technologies, directional high-energy EMP generation technology using non-lethal soft-kill and hard-kill methods is required.
[0051] Electromagnetic pulse guns (EMP guns) designed to neutralize swarm drone and guided weapon attacks across a space or area spanning several kilometers could become a new game changer in modern cyber electronic warfare.
[0052] FIG. 1 schematically shows an embodiment of the virtual cathode oscillator-based electromagnetic pulse gun of the present invention for responding to a drone swarm. It shows a Vircator-based EMP gun (virtual cathode oscillator-based electromagnetic pulse gun) responding to a swarm of suicide drones or guided weapons at a distance ranging from several hundred meters to several kilometers from the ground.
[0053] A virtual cathode oscillator-based electromagnetic pulse gun can serve as a powerful high-power directional microwave EMP gun system to neutralize threats posed by swarms of suicide drones and / or guided weapons in areas or spaces located several kilometers or more away from land, sea, or air. The virtual cathode oscillator-based electromagnetic pulse gun is a system capable of firing bursts of 1 to 10 or more times per second (1 to 10 Hz / sec or more). As shown in Fig. 1, when carried by ground forces or mounted on a tank, it can achieve a radiation angle of approximately 3° or a beam width of approximately 3° using an antenna, and when the electromagnetic pulse is radiated and reaches 3 km from the point of launch, it can cover an area of approximately 160m x 160m. Therefore, swarms of drones distributed within that area can be neutralized with a single electromagnetic pulse gun.
[0054] Figure 2 shows the frequency, output, neutralization distance, and transport characteristics of high-power microwaves (emission waves) emitted from the virtual cathode oscillator-based electromagnetic pulse gun of the present invention.
[0055] The frequency of the emitted wave of the electromagnetic pulse gun based on a virtual cathode oscillator is 1 to 10 GHz or near thereto, and the pulse width is 30 to 100 ns or less. If the error range of the frequency is ±1%, it can be 0.09 to 10.1 GHz.
[0056] The radiation angle or beam width is around 3 to 15° (2.7 to 16.5° if the error range is 10%), and the directivity is excellent.
[0057] When the radiation angle or beam width is 3°, the coverage area at a distance of 3 km is very wide, approximately 160m × 160m, so a unit can neutralize a significant number of drone swarms.
[0058] The electromagnetic pulse gun of the present invention can be powered by a battery and can be miniaturized and lightweight, allowing for various platforms. For example, it can be carried directly by a soldier or mounted on vehicles, drones, guided weapons, etc. In other words, it can be deployed as a fixed or portable type on the ground, on surfaces such as structures, or in the air.
[0059] The electromagnetic pulse gun of the present invention uses a frequency of 1 to 10 GHz and can implement both soft kill and hard kill methods, with a maximum output of 1 GW or more, capable of instantly and permanently damaging attack drones and / or guided weapons located several km away. Accordingly, it can be applied for the defense of major civilian and public facilities, such as nuclear power plants, hydroelectric power plants, oil refineries, ports, and public institutions, and can be utilized by both the civilian and military sectors.
[0060] FIG. 3 shows a virtual cathode oscillator, which is a main part of an electromagnetic pulse gun. FIG. 3a is of a conventional type, FIG. 3b is the oscillator tube of the TM high-efficiency virtual cathode oscillator (Vircator) with an axial structure of the present invention, and FIG. 3c is the oscillator tube of the TE high-efficiency virtual cathode oscillator (Vircator) with a transversal structure of the present invention.
[0061] The operating principle of the virtual cathode oscillator is explained with reference to the configuration of Fig. 3a as follows. A cathode is arranged within a waveguide, also known as a drift tube, and an anode is arranged at a predetermined distance from the cathode. The anode is composed of a mesh conductor. The area where the cathode and anode are arranged is called the so-called diode region. The inside of the waveguide is maintained at a high vacuum.
[0062] A vicator maintaining a high vacuum applies a high-voltage pulse of approximately -200 kV or higher and less than 100 ns to the cathode, while grounding the anode. Consequently, intense relativistic electrons are instantaneously generated at the cathode at a current of more than 20 kA. The current of the electron beam generated at the cathode passes through the anode and propagates along the axial direction of the waveguide. At this point, when the electron beam current (~10 kA) exceeds the spatial current limit (~2 kA), the electron beam is unable to proceed further at a specific point in the waveguide (similar to the distance between the anode and the cathode), becomes pinched there, undergoes dipole oscillation, and some of the electrons are reflected (Fig. 3a). This cluster of electron beams, which is unable to proceed further and is clustered there while oscillating, is called a virtual cathode. The current of the electron beam generated above is approximately 5 to 10 kA or slightly lower, and the limiting current of the space current is approximately 1.5 kA to 2 kA or lower.
[0063] HPM of the TM (Transverse magnetic) mode of 1 to 10 GHz is generated by the oscillation of a virtual cathode, and this high-power microwave HPM propagates into the axial space of the waveguide.
[0064] Figure 3(a) shows a Vircator™ mode oscillator tube with a low-efficiency axial structure having a microwave conversion characteristic of 5% or less (~5%). An electromagnetic pulse gun based on this can respond to swarm drones, but its effective range does not reach the km range.
[0065] FIG. 3(b) shows a TM mode radiator with an axial structure having high-efficiency HPM conversion characteristics of up to approximately 20% (~20%) as proposed in the present invention. HPM generated from a virtual cathode (VC1) (30) travels along the axial direction of the waveguide, i.e., to the front. At this time, the HPM is amplified by the interaction with the wall charge (VC2) of a dielectric reflector (40) installed at the front of VC1. Additionally, an HPM resonance tube structure is formed between the dielectric reflector (40) inside the waveguide and a grounded anode (20), thereby exhibiting high-efficiency HPM conversion characteristics. The anode (20) is composed of a mesh conductor. The dielectric reflector (40) has an opening capable of emitting HPM. It is preferable to arrange a transparent plate (not shown in FIG. 3b) at the end of the waveguide.
[0066] FIG. 3(c) shows a transversal structure virtual cathode oscillator proposed in the present invention having high-efficiency HPM conversion characteristics of up to approximately 20% (~20%). It exhibits high-efficiency HPM conversion characteristics of 15 to 20%. The virtual cathode oscillator of the present invention is composed of a TE (Transverse electric) mode oscillator tube.
[0067] In the high-efficiency structure of FIG. 3(c), the structure of the cathode (10) and the anode (20) is arranged in a direction perpendicular to the central axis of the waveguide (1), as shown in FIG. 3(b), so that the direction of electric field oscillation of the electron beam and the direction of propagation of the HPM are perpendicular. Inside the waveguide (1), the cathode (10) is arranged in a direction parallel to the upper and lower surfaces of the waveguide (1), and the anode (20) is arranged parallel to the cathode (10) at a predetermined distance from the cathode (10). The anode (20) is composed of a grounded mesh conductor. The cathode (10) is supported by a cathode holder (10-1).
[0068] Then, as shown in FIG. 3(b), a conductor reflector (50) with a reflectivity of 100% is installed on the left side of the cathode (10), and a dielectric transparent plate (60) with a constant thickness is installed on the outer side of the end of the waveguide (1) to form a resonant cavity in which the HPM oscillating from the vicator forms a standing wave within this space. That is, an intense relativistic electron beam is generated from the cathode (10) and accelerated toward the anode (20). At this time, when the current of the electron beam traveling beyond the anode (~5 to 10 kA) becomes greater than the space charge limit current (~1 to 2 kA or less), a virtual cathode (VC) (30) is formed in the space beyond the anode, which is the distance between the cathode (10) and the anode (20). From this virtual cathode (30), HPM in the TE mode is generated laterally along the waveguide. When the direction along the axis in which HPM is generated and propagates from the virtual cathode (30) is referred to as the front end, the conductor reflector (50) is positioned at the rear end of the cathode (10) and the transmission plate (60) is positioned at the front end of the cathode, preferably arranged at the front end of the cathode and at the end of the waveguide. The transmission plate (60) can be made of acrylic, polycarbonate, bulletproof glass, etc. The conductor reflector (50) and the transmission plate (60) form a resonance tube, thereby creating an HPM standing wave.
[0069] During the ~30 ns period in which the HPM is generated, the standing wave is reflected about ~100 times, causing the pulse width to decrease, and at this time, the HPM standing wave is output with amplified power. That is, the standing wave is reflected about 10 to 100 times in a time of about 5 to 30 ns, causing the pulse width to decrease, and the HPM-based EMP amplified to high power passes through a transparent plate placed at the end of the waveguide and is radiated.
[0070] In the above, the width w of the virtual cathode oscillator (Vircator) is 0.5 m to 0.7 m, and the total length L of the oscillator is 2.0 to 2.3 m to miniaturize it.
[0071] FIG. 4 is a cross-sectional view showing the configuration of the electromagnetic pulse gun based on the virtual cathode oscillator of the present invention.
[0072] A Marx generator (200) that supplies power to the oscillator tube (100) of a virtual cathode oscillator and a power system (300) that supplies power to the Marx generator (200) are connected. The power system (300) may include a high-speed capacitor charger (RCC), a battery, and a battery management system for the Marx generator (200) which includes a plurality of capacitors. The voltage of the battery may be selected from 250 to 370 V, and preferably, one with an operating voltage of DC 350 V is applied. When fixedly installed on a ground structure, building, warship, etc., equipped with a system capable of supplying energy, it may be connected to a power device equipped with a power management system, and in such a case, the battery may be omitted.
[0073] The electromagnetic pulse gun based on a virtual cathode oscillator of this configuration has an effective range of several kilometers, a maximum output of the radiated electromagnetic pulse of approximately 1 GW (1.0 to 2.0 GW), and a frequency characteristic of 1 to 10 GHz. It is capable of continuous firing in burst mode with a firing rate of about 1 to 10 times per second.
[0074] In addition, the virtual cathode oscillator-based electromagnetic pulse gun of the present invention can be battery-powered so that it can be carried or installed on the ground as well as mounted on a missile or unmanned aerial vehicle, and the size and weight of the virtual cathode oscillator-based electromagnetic pulse gun can be implemented as a compact and lightweight system of the device within ~2 m × 0.5 m × 0.5 m and 200 ~ 250 kg, respectively. That is, the size of the virtual cathode oscillator-based electromagnetic pulse gun can be configured to have a length of 2.0 to 2.4 m and a width and height of 0.5 to 0.6 m.
[0075] The radiation waves of the electromagnetic pulse gun based on the virtual cathode oscillator of the present invention are transmitted to the target at the speed of light, and since continuous firing is possible, the effective range reaches several km and the effective area is approximately 160m × 160m, making it possible to neutralize clustered drone swarms and guided weapon attacks within that area.
[0076] The performance of the virtual cathode oscillator-based electromagnetic pulse gun of the present invention is as follows.
[0077] It causes burnout or physical damage to internal components of electronic equipment due to powerful high energy.
[0078] Due to its highly directional radiation characteristics, it is possible to attack targets without damaging surrounding facilities.
[0079] With a radiation angle or beam width of approximately 3 to 15°, it is possible to attack multiple targets simultaneously without precise aiming.
[0080] It is also possible to attack while scanning the target area without precision aiming.
[0081] It enables miniaturization, lightweight design, and battery operation, maximizing portability and mobility, and is easy to integrate into existing platforms.
[0082] With an effective range reaching several kilometers, it secures the world's highest level of effective range.
[0083] The high-speed capacitor charger (RCC) and battery and battery management system of the power system (300) are power devices that drive the battery at high speed.
[0084] The power system is equipped with battery management and an integrated automatic charging system to control rated output and heat dissipation performance.
[0085] The High-Speed Capacitor Charger (RCC) implements high-speed capacitor charging and discharging technology to rapidly charge high-capacity capacitors.
[0086] In addition, the power system (300) is equipped with a high frequency inverter to enhance power conversion performance and the rated output performance of the battery.
[0087] In addition, a Marx generator is applied to include a high voltage and pulse forming line LC circuit configured in parallel with a high-energy capacitance capacitor to generate a high voltage pulse. Alternatively, a separate pulse forming line can be configured in series with the Marx generator to form a short high voltage pulse of ~100 ns or less.
[0088] The present invention achieves lightweight and miniaturization of the electromagnetic pulse gun by analyzing the source impedance and vicator load characteristics of the Marx generator, which leads to improved system operability.
[0089] In addition, the present invention comprises a high-efficiency virtual cathode oscillator (Vircator), and 10 -6 ~10 -8 An ultra-high vacuum oscillator tube system at the Torr level was constructed. The oscillator tube of the virtual cathode oscillator (Vircator) of the present invention is 10 -6 to 10 -8 Maintains an ultra-high vacuum of Torr.
[0090] In addition, the present invention improves efficiency by configuring the virtual cathode oscillator into a reflex triode TE oscillator including a cathode (10), an anode (20), and a virtual cathode (VC) (30).
[0091] In addition, the present invention improves efficiency by configuring the virtual cathode oscillator into a Reflex triode TM oscillator including a cathode (10), an anode (20), and a virtual cathode (VC) (30).

The microwave signal radiated by the virtual cathode oscillator of FIG. 3b is similar to the signal of FIG. 3c and is therefore not shown.
[0093] It can be confirmed that the maximum amplitude of the electromagnetic pulse radiated by the virtual cathode oscillator is 0.355 au and 796 MW for the conventional one, whereas the present invention is 0.669 au and 1.5 GW, indicating a nearly twofold improvement in performance.
