[0013] The present invention will be described in detail below through examples. The purpose, features, and advantages of the present invention will be easily understood through the following examples. The present invention is not limited to the examples described herein and may be embodied in other forms. The examples introduced herein are provided to ensure that the disclosed content is thorough and complete, and to ensure that the concept of the present invention is sufficiently conveyed to those skilled in the art to which the present invention pertains. Accordingly, the present invention should not be limited by the following examples.

[0014] Although terms such as "first," "second," etc., have been used in this specification to describe various elements, said elements should not be limited by such terms. These terms are used merely to distinguish said elements from one another.

[0016] A coating material according to embodiments of the present invention comprises an organic solvent and a biodegradable resin dissolved in said organic solvent.

[0017] The coating material may further include a solubilizing agent that is dissolved in the organic solvent to increase the solubility of the biodegradable resin.

[0018] The solubilizing agent may have a higher solubility in the organic solvent than the biodegradable resin. The solubilizing agent may have a polar structure. The solubilizing agent may include at least one of an ether structure and an ester structure. The solubilizing agent may include at least one compound from Chemical Formulas 1 to 3 below. The compound may have a weight-average molecular weight of 1,000 to 20,000, have compatibility and affinity with the biodegradable resin, and be biodegradable.

[0019] [Chemical Formula 1]

[0020]

[0021] [Chemical Formula 2]

[0022]

[0023] [Chemical Formula 3]

[0024]

[0025] In the above chemical formulas 1 to 3, R and R' each represent a hydrocarbon or hydrogen having 0 to 24 carbon atoms, and n, m, and x each represent an integer from 0 to 400.

[0026] The above biodegradable resin may include at least one of PLA (polylactic acid), PCL (polycaprolactone), PPC (polypropylene carbonate), PGA (polyglycolic acid), PBAT (polybutylene adipate terephthalate), PBS (polybutylene succinate), PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoate), TPS (thermoplastic starch), and PEC (polyethylene carbonate). For example, the above biodegradable resin may include two or more of PLA, PCL, and PPC. The above biodegradable resin may have a weight-average molecular weight of 10,000 to 1,000,000. The above biodegradable resin may be included in an amount of 0.01 to 50 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of the coating material.

[0027] PLA has high solubility in organic solvents and exhibits excellent compatibility, hardness, and stiffness, but is brittle. PCL also has high solubility in organic solvents and mixes well with other biodegradable resins in solution, making it easy to obtain mixed compositions. It possesses excellent mechanical properties, such as tensile strength, and softness after cooling, but has a low melting point. PPC has relatively low solubility in organic solvents but exhibits very high swelling characteristics. Additionally, PPC has excellent elasticity, transparency, stretchability, and gas barrier properties, and is selectively and partially soluble in organic solvents. As an amorphous polymer, PPC is effective in improving solubility by disrupting the crystal structure when mixed with other crystalline polymers, and due to its softness and elasticity, it exhibits a synergistic effect when mixed with PLA. PGA has excellent tensile strength, heat resistance, and gas barrier properties, but has low solubility in organic solvents. PBAT has relatively low solubility in organic solvents and possesses properties suitable for film applications.

[0028] Various coating materials can be manufactured by combining rigid biodegradable resins (e.g., PLA) and flexible biodegradable resins (e.g., PCL, PPC), and biodegradable films with various physical properties can be formed using said coating materials. For example, by mixing rigid biodegradable resins and flexible biodegradable resins in a solution, a biodegradable film with excellent physical properties such as barrier properties, coating properties, and mechanical strength can be formed. Furthermore, paper coated with said biodegradable film can be used for various purposes and is environmentally friendly.

[0029] The above organic solvent may include at least one of ester-based organic solvents, ketone-based organic solvents, ether-based organic solvents, carbonate-based organic solvents, chlorine-based organic solvents, and aromatic-based organic solvents. For example, the above organic solvent may include at least one of ethyl acetate (EA), butyl acetate (BA), methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK), cyclohexanone, dichloromethane (MC), monochlorobenzene, dimethyl carbonate (DMC), diethyl carbonate (DEC), tetrahydrofuran (THF), and toluene.

[0030] The coating material may further include an inorganic powder contained in the organic solvent. For example, the inorganic powder may include silica, fumed silica, alumina, zeolite, titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate, sodium carbonate, etc. The inorganic powder may have a size of 0.01 to 1,000 μm. The inorganic powder is dispersed in the organic solvent and can impart properties such as heat resistance, mechanical strength, surface characteristics, and color to the coating material.

[0031] The above biodegradable resin solution may have a viscosity of 0.01 to 10,000 cP. The viscosity of the above biodegradable resin solution can be controlled by adjusting the type and content of the biodegradable resin, the type and content of the inorganic powder, the type and content of the organic solvent, etc.

[0033] A method for manufacturing a coating material according to embodiments of the present invention comprises the step of dissolving a biodegradable resin in an organic solvent to form a biodegradable resin solution.

[0034] The step of forming the above biodegradable resin solution may include the step of dissolving a solubilizing agent in the organic solvent to increase the solubility of the biodegradable resin. The solubilizing agent may have a greater solubility in the organic solvent than the biodegradable resin.

[0035] [Chemical Formula 1]

[0036]

[0037] [Chemical Formula 2]

[0038]

[0039] [Chemical Formula 3]

[0040]

[0041] In the above chemical formulas 1 to 3, R and R' each represent a hydrocarbon or hydrogen having 0 to 24 carbon atoms, and n, m, and x each represent an integer from 0 to 400.

[0042] The above biodegradable resin may include at least one of PLA, PCL, PPC, PGA, PBAT, PBS, PHA, TPS, and PEC.

[0043] The above organic solvent may include at least one of ester-based organic solvents, ketone-based organic solvents, ether-based organic solvents, carbonate-based organic solvents, chlorine-based organic solvents, and aromatic-based organic solvents. For example, the above organic solvent may include at least one of ethyl acetate (EA), butyl acetate (BA), methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK), cyclohexanone, dichloromethane (MC), monochlorobenzene, dimethyl carbonate (DMC), diethyl carbonate (DEC), tetrahydrofuran (THF), and toluene.

[0044] The step of forming the above biodegradable resin solution may include the step of adding an inorganic powder to the organic solvent. The inorganic powder may be added when dissolving the biodegradable resin in the organic solvent, or it may be added before or after dissolving the biodegradable resin in the organic solvent. For example, the inorganic powder may include silica, fumed silica, alumina, zeolite, titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate, sodium carbonate, etc. The inorganic powder may have a size of 0.01 to 1,000 μm. The inorganic powder may be dispersed in the organic solvent to impart properties such as heat resistance, mechanical strength, surface characteristics, and color to the biodegradable resin solution.

[0045] The above biodegradable resin solution may have a viscosity of 0.01 to 10,000 cP. The viscosity of the above biodegradable resin solution can be controlled by adjusting the type and content of the biodegradable resin, the type and content of the inorganic powder, the type and content of the organic solvent, etc.

[0046] The above biodegradable resin may include a first biodegradable resin and a second biodegradable resin, and the above organic solvent may include a first organic solvent and a second organic solvent. The solubility of the first biodegradable resin in the first organic solvent may be higher than the solubility of the first biodegradable resin in the second organic solvent, and the solubility of the second biodegradable resin in the second organic solvent may be higher than the solubility of the second biodegradable resin in the first organic solvent.

[0047] For example, the first biodegradable resin may include a hard biodegradable resin (e.g., PLA), and the second biodegradable resin may include a soft biodegradable resin (e.g., PCL, PPC). In this way, various coating materials can be manufactured by combining various biodegradable resins. In one embodiment, a coating material can be manufactured using an organic solvent having similar solubility for each of the first biodegradable resin and the second biodegradable resin. In another embodiment, a coating material can be manufactured by dissolving the first biodegradable resin in a first organic solvent and dissolving the second biodegradable resin in a second solvent, and then mixing the two solutions. In yet another embodiment, a coating material can be manufactured by dissolving the first biodegradable resin and the second biodegradable resin together in a mixed solvent of the first organic solvent and the second organic solvent.

[0048] The above organic solvent may include a first organic solvent and a second organic solvent, and the solubility of the biodegradable resin in the first organic solvent may be higher than the solubility of the biodegradable resin in the second organic solvent, and the boiling point of the second organic solvent may be higher than the boiling point of the first organic solvent. The step of forming the biodegradable resin solution may include the step of starting the dissolution of the biodegradable resin at a certain temperature and then heating the organic solvent to increase the dissolution temperature. The dissolution temperature may be increased gradually.

[0049] For example, to increase the solubility of the biodegradable resin in the first organic solvent, a mixed solvent may be used in which a second organic solvent having a higher boiling point than the first organic solvent is added. In one embodiment, when dissolving the biodegradable resin in the mixed solvent, the dissolution temperature may be set between the boiling point of the first organic solvent and the boiling point of the second organic solvent. In another embodiment, the dissolution of the biodegradable resin may begin at a temperature lower than the boiling point of the first organic solvent and then gradually increase the temperature.

[0051] A coated product according to embodiments of the present invention comprises a coating target and a biodegradable film coated on said coating target. The biodegradable film is formed by providing said coating material to said coating target and then removing said organic solvent.

[0052] The coating target may include at least one of paper, plastic, wood, and metal. For example, a coating material with a liquid thickness of 0.01 to 1,000 μm is applied to the surface of natural pulp paper or recycled paper with a thickness of 0.01 to 10 mm using a coater (micro coater or gravure coater). The paper provided with the coating material is dried continuously by passing through rollers in a drying chamber at room temperature to 150°C. By doing so, a biodegradable film can be coated onto the paper. The biodegradable film may be formed on one side of the paper layer or on both sides. Additionally, the biodegradable film may be formed directly on the paper layer, or another layer may be interposed between the biodegradable film and the paper layer.

[0054] [Experimental Example]

[0056] A solubility test of the biodegradable resin was performed at 10°C using an organic solvent, and the results are shown in Table 1 below.

[0057] [Table 1]

[0058]

[0060] Solubility tests of biodegradable resins were performed at 60°C using organic solvents, and the results are shown in Table 2 below. Dichloromethane was subjected to solubility tests at its boiling point of 40°C.

[0061] [Table 2]

[0062]

[0064] In Tables 1 and 2 above, ◎ indicates that the biodegradable resin is completely dissolved in an organic solvent, ○ indicates that it is partially dissolved, △ indicates that dissolution is observed, and × indicates that it is not dissolved.

[0065] The overall solubility of biodegradable resins was found to be in the order of ester < aromatic < ketone < ether < carbonate < chlorine. In particular, the chlorine-based dichloromethane (MC) showed complete solubility of about 20 wt% for PLA, PCL, and PBAT. However, since dichloromethane (MC) has a boiling point at 40°C and is not an ideal solvent in terms of volatility and safety, it is desirable to use it mixed with an organic solvent that has a high boiling point.

[0067] Solubility experiments of the biodegradable resin were performed using a mixed solvent prepared by mixing dichloromethane and another organic solvent in a weight ratio of 3:2, and the results are shown in Table 3 below. Dissolution was started at 40°C and the temperature was gradually increased to 80°C.

[0068] [Table 3]

[0069]

[0071] The contents shown in Table 3 represent the weight content of the biodegradable resin included in each sample. For example, Sample 1 consists of PLA 40%, PCL 20%, PBS 30%, and PBAT 10%.

[0072] Basically, the combination of dichloromethane (MC) and other organic solvents utilizes the excellent solubility of dichloromethane and the good solubility and relatively high boiling point of other solvents to dissolve biodegradable resins at temperatures higher than the boiling point of dichloromethane (MC), which is 40°C, thereby increasing the solubility of biodegradable resins in all samples.

[0073] Dichloromethane (MC) can increase the solubility of biodegradable resins while lowering environmental risk by using a mixture of organic solvents with relatively high boiling points and low environmental risk, such as methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK), dimethyl carbonate (DMC), and tetrahydrofuran (THF).

[0075] A biodegradable resin solution (coating material) was prepared using a resin (mixed resin) mixed with two or more biodegradable resins and a solvent (mixed solvent) mixed with two or more organic solvents, and the results are shown in Table 4 below.

[0076] [Table 4]

[0077]

[0078] CA: cyclohexanone, CB: monochlorobenzene

[0080] When a mixed resin and a mixed solvent are used, solubility increases, allowing for the production of a coating material with a resin content of 10 to 16%. When a coating layer (biodegradable film) is formed on paper using the above coating material, water resistance is significantly increased and heat sealability is exhibited. This means that it can be applied to packaging materials where a high-speed heat sealing process is performed.

[0082] A biodegradable resin solution (coating material) was prepared using a resin (mixed resin) in which two or more biodegradable resins were mixed, a solvent (mixed solvent) in which two or more organic solvents were mixed, and a solubilizing agent, and the results are shown in Table 5 below.

[0083] [Table 5]

[0084]

[0085] CB: monochlorobenzene

[0086] PEG4000: polyethyleneglycol (Mw 4000)

[0087] PEG8000DE: polyethyleneglycol distearate (Mw 8000)

[0088] PEG400DO: polyethyleneglycol dioleate (Mw 800)

[0090] Solubilizing agents can interfere with the crystal formation of the polymer by penetrating and culturing between the polymer chains of the biodegradable resin. This can increase the solubility of the polymer and improve its flexibility and fluidity.

[0091] Biodegradable resins generally have an aliphatic polyester structure (-RCOOR'-) and are insoluble in water but have polarity due to their ester structure. Substances that can be applied as solubilizers to biodegradable resin solutions must have greater solubility than the biodegradable resin in the selected solvent system and possess an ether structure and / or an ester structure with similar polarity. Additionally, they must have no or very low volatility in the biodegradable resin solution even after the solvent evaporates, which minimizes negative effects on the polymer properties of the biodegradable film (coating layer) after drying.

[0093] [Example of Coating Material Preparation]

[0094] An organic solvent (such as DMC) is introduced into a stirrer capable of heating and cooling, and the temperature is raised to approximately 50°C. Biodegradable resins (such as PLA, PCL, PPC, etc.) and a solubilizer are introduced into the stirrer in sequence. The temperature is raised to 75°C while stirring at approximately 50 to 100 rpm. Stirring is performed at atmospheric pressure; however, to minimize solvent evaporation during heating, a stirrer equipped with a condenser is used, and a dissolver-type stirrer is preferred. After the biodegradable resin is sufficiently dissolved, it is filtered using a 100 to 150 mesh filter and then packaged.

[0096] [Example of manufacturing a coated product]

[0098] Preparation Example 1

[0099] The coating material absorbed into the mesh roll is transferred to the paper via contact while the paper is driven between the press roll and the mesh roll. The direction of travel of the paper and the direction of the mesh roll are in the forward direction. When using #80 to #120 mesh rolls, the coating amount is 2 to 3 g / m² based on a coating material (biodegradable resin solution) with a resin content of 20%. A driving speed of 40 to 80 MPM (meters per minute) is suitable. After coating, the material is dried in a drying chamber by blowing air heated to over 120°C (at a rate of over 100 m³ per minute). Since there is a limit to the coating thickness per application, this method is suitable for thin film coating. When coating a thickness of approximately 10 g / m², the above process (coating and drying) is repeated continuously several times.

[0101] Preparation Example 2

[0102] The coating agent permeated in the mesh roll is coated by transferring it to the paper via contact while the paper is driven between the press roll and the mesh roll. The direction of travel of the paper and the direction of the mesh roll are opposite. Based on a coating material (biodegradable resin solution) with a resin content of 20%, the coating amount is 10 to 20 g / m². A driving speed of 40 to 80 MPM is suitable. After coating, the paper is dried in a drying chamber by blowing air heated to 130°C or higher (at a rate of 100 m³ or more per minute).

[0104] Preparation Example 3

[0105] The coating material applied to the paper running with a comma applicator is applied at a gap clearance or less. The coating amount is 10 to 20 g / m² based on a coating material with a resin content of 20% (biodegradable resin solution). A running speed of 40 to 80 MPM is suitable. After coating, the paper is dried in a drying chamber by blowing air heated to 130°C or higher (at a rate of 100 m³ or more per minute).

[0107] Preparation Example 4

[0108] After transferring the coating material to the slot dies through a closed pipe, the coating material is coated onto the paper by maintaining a constant gap between the die and the surface of the paper running.

[0110] In the above Manufacturing Examples 1 to 4, paper was described as an example of a coated product, but it is not limited thereto, and a biodegradable film (coating layer) can be formed on plastic, wood, metal, etc. using the coating material of the present invention.

[0112] Specific embodiments of the present invention have been examined so far. Those skilled in the art will understand that the present invention may be embodied in modified forms without departing from the essential characteristics of the invention. Therefore, the disclosed embodiments should be considered in an illustrative rather than a restrictive sense. The scope of the present invention is defined by the claims, not by the foregoing description, and all variations within the scope of equivalents should be interpreted as being included in the present invention.
