[0023] Unless otherwise defined, the terms used in the embodiments of the present disclosure may be interpreted in the sense commonly known to those skilled in the art.

[0024] Various embodiments of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the attached drawings.

[0025] FIG. 1 is a drawing illustrating a display device according to one embodiment of the present disclosure.

[0026] According to one embodiment of the present disclosure, the display device (1000) may include a modular display panel (500).

[0027] A modular display panel (500) is formed by combining or assembling a plurality of display modules (130-1 to 130-12) to form a single display panel. In FIG. 1, 12 display modules (130-1 to 130-12) are used as an example to form a single modular display panel (500), but it is not limited thereto.

[0028] The modular display panel (500) can be applied to small display devices (1000) such as monitors, TVs, laptops, etc., or large display devices (1000) such as digital signage, electronic display video walls, etc.

[0029] Meanwhile, when an image begins to be displayed on the modular display panel (500) in an off state, it is desirable that each display module (130-1 to 130-12) be turned on simultaneously. However, as described above, the control elements (e.g., power IC, driver IC, etc.) included in each display module (130-1 to 130-12) have hardware characteristic variations depending on the display module. Therefore, even if a control signal to turn on each display module (130-1 to 130-12) is applied simultaneously to each display module (130-1 to 130-12), due to the aforementioned variation, the actual display modules (130-1 to 130-12) are not turned on simultaneously but are turned on sequentially.

[0030] Conventionally, in order to prevent such sequential on operations from being visible to the user, a signal indicating that each display module (130-1 to 130-12) is turned on (e.g., output signal of a power IC, etc.) is combined into a logic gate (e.g., AND / OR / XOR, etc.), and through this, after confirming that all display modules (130-1 to 130-12) are turned on, an image is simultaneously displayed on each display module (130-1 to 130-12).

[0031] However, in this case, additional hardware configuration or wiring is required for the logic gate configuration, and a delay occurs because the image is not displayed on the screen until all the display modules (130-1 to 130-12) are turned on.

[0032] As will be described in detail below, according to embodiments of the present disclosure, a blank section of a data signal is used to turn on each display module (130-1 to 130-12). Additionally, a black screen is displayed using an image frame section of the data signal, and then an actual image is displayed. Accordingly, the problem of each display module (130-1 to 130-12) of the modular display panel (500) being turned on sequentially can be solved without increasing hardware complexity or delay in screen display.

[0033] FIG. 2 is a block diagram illustrating the configuration of a display device according to one embodiment of the present disclosure.

[0034] Referring to FIG. 2, the display device (1000) includes a scaler (110), a timing controller (120), and a display module (130).

[0035] The display module (130) can display various images. To this end, the display module (130) includes a display panel that includes a light-emitting element. Additionally, the display module (130) includes various control ICs (e.g., power IC, data driver IC, etc.) for controlling the operation of the display panel. Meanwhile, a plurality of display modules (130) can be combined to form a modular display panel (500).

[0036] The scaler (110) receives video signals from various sources such as a broadcast receiver, HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface), USB (Universal Serial Bus), and the internet, performs image processing to adjust the resolution, sharpness, contrast, and grayscale of the input source video signal, and then outputs video data to the timing controller (120).

[0037] At this time, the image data output by the scaler (110) may have a predefined format. Here, the predefined format is a video data format in which an image frame section containing image data and a blank section not containing image data are alternately repeated, and may be, for example, a video data format such as V by one, LVDS, etc., but is not limited thereto.

[0038] FIG. 3a is a diagram illustrating an example of a data format output from a scaler (110) to a timing controller (120). Referring to FIG. 3a, the data format can be seen to include video frame sections (30-2, 30-4, 30-6) containing actual video data to be displayed on a display module (130), and blank sections (31-1, 30-3, 30-5) existing between video frame sections and not containing actual video data.

[0039] Since the blank section is a section that does not contain actual video data, even if a promised signal is included in that section, it does not affect the video displayed to the user. Therefore, according to an embodiment of the present disclosure, the scaler (110) can output a panel-on signal to turn on the display module (130) using this blank section. At this time, the panel-on signal is a signal promised to perform the operation of turning on the display module (130) when the timing controller (120) identifies it, and may be a digital signal such as, for example, 101010, but is not limited thereto. Meanwhile, the scaler (110) can output video data using the video frame section after the blank section containing the panel-on signal.

[0040] Referring to FIG. 3a, it can be seen that the scaler (110) first outputs a panel-on signal (P) using a blank section (30-1), and then outputs image data (a1, a2, a3...) using subsequent image frame sections (30-2, 30-4, 30-6...).

[0041] The timing controller (120) controls the operation of the display module (130) based on the image data output from the scaler (110). The timing controller (120), also known as T-CON, can output various control signals and timing-controlled image data to the display module (130) so that the image data output from the scaler (110) can be displayed on the display module (130).

[0042] In particular, according to one embodiment of the present disclosure, the timing controller (120) can turn on the display module (130) when the panel-on signal included in the blank section is identified.

[0043] Specifically, the timing controller (120) can periodically check the data in the blank section until video data is received from the scaler (110). Accordingly, when a panel-on signal is identified in the blank section, the timing controller (120) can turn on the display module (130) by outputting a control signal (e.g., a power IC-on signal) to the display module to turn on the display module (130).

[0044] According to one embodiment of the present disclosure described above, the display module (130) can be turned on using a blank section included in the image data format output by the scaler (110), thereby preventing the hardware configuration from becoming complex to implement logic gates as in the prior art.

[0045] Meanwhile, according to one embodiment of the present disclosure, the timing controller (120) can output black image data to the display module (130) in at least one image frame section following a blank section containing a panel-on signal.

[0046] Specifically, the timing controller (120) can turn on the display module (130) when a panel-on signal is identified in the blank section (30-1). However, the timing controller (120) may not output the video data (a1, a2, a3...) immediately even if video data (a1, a2, a3...) is identified in the subsequent video frame sections (30-2, 30-4, 30-6...), but may output the video data (a1, a2, a3...) after outputting black data for at least one video frame section.

[0047] As described above, even if an ON signal is applied simultaneously to a plurality of display modules (130-1 to 130-12) constituting a modular display panel (500), there is a deviation in the time at which each display module (130-1 to 130-12) turns on due to hardware deviation.

[0048] However, by using a blank interval to turn on each display module (130-1 to 130-12), displaying a black screen for a certain period of time (at least one video frame interval), and then displaying video simultaneously thereafter, the user may not perceive that each display module (130-1 to 130-12) is turned on sequentially. Since one or several video frame intervals are very short time intervals, the user may receive the effect of multiple display modules (130-1 to 130-12) being turned on simultaneously.

[0049] FIG. 3b illustrates an example of a data format that a timing controller (120) outputs to a display module (130) when video data of the same format as FIG. 3a is received from a scaler (110). Referring to FIG. 3b, it can be seen that the data format that the timing controller (120) outputs to the display module (130) also includes blank sections (31-1, 31-3, 31-5...) and video frame sections (31-2, 31-4, 31-6...).

[0050] At this time, the timing controller (120) can identify the panel-on signal (P) from the image data signal received from the scaler (110) and turn on the display module (130) at a time corresponding, for example, to the blank section (31-1). Afterwards, the timing controller (120) can be seen to output black data (b) to the image frame section (31-2) following the blank section (31-1), and output image data (a1, a2...) using the image frame sections (31-4, 31-6...) following the image frame section (31-2) where the black data (b) is output.

[0051] That is, even if the panel-on signal (P) and video data (a1, a2, a3...) are received in the same order as in FIG. 3a, the timing controller (120) can insert black video data before outputting video data (a1, a2, a3...) after turning on the display module (130) as shown in FIG. 3b. Meanwhile, FIG. 3b shows an example where black video data is inserted into a single video frame section (31-2), but it is not limited thereto, and depending on the embodiment, black video data may be inserted into two or more consecutive video frame sections.

[0052] As described above, by operating each display module (130-1 to 130-12) included in the modular display panel (500), the problem of the display modules (130-1 to 130-12) being turned on sequentially can be solved without increasing hardware complexity due to the addition of logic gates or delays in screen display.

[0053] Meanwhile, in the above example, to turn on the display module (130) and display a black image, an image data signal such as that shown in FIG. 3a is received from the scaler (110), and the timing controller (120) arbitrarily inserts black data, but the embodiment is not limited thereto.

[0054] For example, black image data may be included in the image data signal output by the scaler (110). FIG. 3c is a diagram illustrating the format of the image data signal output by the scaler (110) according to one embodiment of the present disclosure. Referring to FIG. 3c, it can be seen that the scaler (110) outputs a panel-on signal (P) using a blank section (32-1), outputs black image data (b) using an image frame section (32-2) following the blank section (32-1), and outputs image data (a1, a2...) using the subsequent image frame sections (32-4, 32-6...). In this case, the timing controller (130) identifies the panel-on signal (P) included in the blank section (32-1) and turns on the display module (130), and then outputs the black image data (b) and image data (a1, a2...) in the order shown in FIG. 3b without separately inserting black image data.

[0055] FIG. 4 is a block diagram illustrating the configuration of a display device according to one embodiment of the present disclosure. In describing FIG. 4, redundant descriptions of configurations identical to those described above are omitted.

[0056] Referring to FIG. 4, the display device (1000) includes a scaler (110), a timing controller (120), and a display module (130). At this time, the display module (130) may include a power IC (131), a data driver (132), and a display panel (133).

[0057] The display panel (133) can display an image through a pixel array. At this time, each pixel (or sub-pixel) constituting the pixel array can be implemented using various display technologies such as LCD (Liquid Crystal Display Panel), LED (light emitting diode), OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diodes), and Micro LED. Meanwhile, the display panel (133) can be implemented using either an AM (Active Matrix) method or a PM (Passive Matrix) method.

[0058] The data driver (132) receives video data from the timing controller (120), generates a data signal to be applied to the display panel (133), and can output the generated data signal to the display panel (133).

[0059] Meanwhile, although not shown, the display module (130) may further include a gate driver for generating a gate signal to drive a pixel array line by line and outputting the generated gate signal to a display panel (133).

[0060] The power IC (131) supplies various power sources to operate the display module (130) under the control of the timing controller (120). For example, the power IC (131) can supply power (e.g., driving voltage, power supply voltage) to the display panel (133) and the data driver (132). Therefore, when the power IC (131) is off, the display panel (133) and the data driver (132) are also off.

[0061] The timing controller (120) controls the overall operation of the display module (130). In particular, the timing controller (120) can output a control signal to the power IC (131) to control the power of the power IC (131) and output timing-controlled video data to the data driver (132).

[0062] According to one embodiment of the present disclosure, when the aforementioned panel-on signal is identified, the timing controller (120) may output a control signal to the power IC (132) to turn on the power IC (132). Accordingly, when the power IC (132) is turned on, power is supplied to the data driver (132) and the display panel (133), and the display module (130) is turned on.

[0063] For example, the display device (1000) may operate in standby mode. Here, standby mode is a mode in which power is supplied only to some components of the display device (1000). For example, when a user command to enter standby mode is entered, or when there is no user operation on the display device (1000) for a certain period of time or longer, the display device (1000) may operate in standby mode to reduce power consumption.

[0064] Meanwhile, according to one embodiment of the present disclosure, in standby mode, the scaler (110) and the timing controller (120) are in an ON state, and the power IC (131) may be in an OFF state. When the power IC (131) is in an OFF state, power is not supplied to the data driver (132) and the display panel (133), so the display module (130) is in an OFF state.

[0065] In this way, when a user command to turn on the display device (1000) is received while the display device (1000) is operating in standby mode, the display device (1000) can turn on the display module (130) and display a video signal input through an input source.

[0066] Specifically, when a user command to turn on the display device (1000) is received while the display device (1000) is operating in standby mode, the scaler (110) outputs a panel-on signal to turn on the display module (130) using a blank interval as described above, and accordingly, the timing controller (120) can turn on the display module (130) by identifying the panel-on signal and outputting a control signal to the power IC (131) to turn on the power IC (131). Accordingly, the video signal input through the input source can be displayed on the display module (130). Meanwhile, as described above, after the display module (130) is turned on, a black image is displayed by the timing controller (120) for a very short time (i.e., one or several video frame intervals as described above) that is imperceptible to the user.

[0067] FIG. 5 is a block diagram illustrating the configuration of a display device according to one embodiment of the present disclosure. In describing FIG. 5, descriptions of content that overlap with the foregoing are omitted.

[0068] Referring to FIG. 5, the display device (1000) includes a scaler (110), a plurality of timing controllers (120-1, 120-2, 120-3...), and a plurality of display modules (130-1, 130-2, 130-3...). At this time, the plurality of display modules (130-1, 130-2, 130-3...) can be combined or assembled with each other in a matrix form as described above in FIG. 1 to form a single large-area display panel, i.e., a modular display panel (500).

[0069] The timing controller (120-1) and display module (130-1), or the timing controller (120-2) and display module (130-2), or the timing controller (120-3) and display module (130-3) shown in FIG. 5 can all perform the same operation as the aforementioned timing controller (120) and display module (130).

[0070] Meanwhile, in FIG. 5, a display device (1000) is exemplified in which a timing controller (120-1, 120-2, 120-3...) for controlling the operation of display modules (130-1, 130-2, 130-3...) exists for each display module, but the embodiment is not limited thereto. For example, the display device (1000) may be configured such that one timing controller controls the operation of two or more display modules. In this case as well, the relationship between one timing controller and the display modules under its control is, of course, the same as the relationship between the timing controller (120) and the display module (130) described above.

[0071] FIG. 6 is a flowchart relating to a control method for a display device according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. In this case, the display device (1000) includes a display module (130), a scaler (110) that processes a source image signal and outputs image data in a predetermined format, and a timing controller (120). Here, the predetermined format includes an image frame section containing image data and a blank section not containing image data.

[0072] According to FIG. 6, the scaler (110) can output a panel-on signal to turn on the display module (130) using a blank section (S610).

[0073] Accordingly, the timing controller (120) can turn on the display module (130) when a panel-on signal is identified from the scaler (110) (S620).

[0074] Meanwhile, according to one embodiment of the present disclosure, the timing controller (120) can turn on the display module based on a panel-on signal and then output black image data to the display module (130) in at least one image frame interval.

[0075] Additionally, the scaler (110) outputs video data using a video frame section after a blank section containing a panel-on signal, and the timing controller (120) can output video data to the display module (130) starting from a video frame section after at least one video frame section in which black video data is output.

[0076] Meanwhile, according to one embodiment of the present disclosure, the display module (130) includes a display panel (133), a data driver (132) for applying image data to the display panel (133), and a power IC (131) for supplying operating power to the display panel (133) and the data driver (132), and the timing controller (120) can output a control signal to the power IC (131) to turn on the power IC (131) when a panel-on signal is identified.

[0077] Additionally, according to one embodiment of the present disclosure, when a user command to turn on the display module (130) is received while the display device (1000) is operating in standby mode, the scaler (110) may output a panel-on signal to turn on the display module (130) using a blank interval. At this time, in standby mode, the scaler (110) and the timing controller (120) may be in an on state, and the power IC (133) may be in an off state.

[0078] Meanwhile, according to one embodiment of the present disclosure, a display device (1000) includes a modular display panel (500) comprising a plurality of display modules (130-1 to 130-12) arranged in a matrix form, and the aforementioned display module (130) may be any one of the plurality of display modules (130-1 to 130-12).

[0079] According to various embodiments of the present disclosure as described above, the problem of each display module (130-1 to 130-12) of the modular display panel (500) being turned on sequentially without increasing hardware complexity or delay in screen display can be solved.

[0080] Meanwhile, various embodiments of the present disclosure may be implemented as software comprising instructions stored on a machine-readable storage media (e.g., a computer). Here, the machine may include a display device (1000) according to the disclosed embodiments, which is a device capable of calling instructions stored from the storage media and operating according to the called instructions.

[0081] When the above command is executed by various processors (the scaler and timing controller described above may also be processors), the processor may perform the function corresponding to the command directly or by utilizing other components under the control of said processor. The command may include code generated or executed by a compiler or an interpreter. A device-readable storage medium may be provided in the form of a non-transitory storage medium. Here, "non-transitory" means only that the storage medium does not contain a signal and is tangible, and does not distinguish whether data is stored semi-permanently or temporarily in the storage medium.

[0082] According to one embodiment, the method according to the various embodiments disclosed herein may be provided as included in a computer program product.
