Description

Technology Field

[0001] The present disclosure relates to a lubricating oil composition and a method for using the same. More specifically, the lubricating oil composition provides a rust prevention function in a hybrid vehicle. Background Technology

[0002] Modern lubricants are often manufactured according to stringent specifications set by the original equipment manufacturer. This often requires blending carefully selected lubricant additives with a base oil of lubricating viscosity. The types or kinds of lubricant additives found in lubricant compositions include, for example, dispersants, detergents, antioxidants, anti-wear agents, rust inhibitors, corrosion inhibitors, defoamers, and / or friction reducers. Generally, the set of additives included in the lubricant composition varies depending on the specific field or application (e.g., hybrid vehicles).

[0003] Hybrid vehicles utilize two different types of drive technologies: an internal combustion engine and an electric motor. The internal combustion engine primarily drives the vehicle at high speeds. The electric motor drives the vehicle at low speeds and can also assist the internal combustion engine when additional power is required. In hybrid vehicles, it is important to distribute power between the engine and the motor in a balanced manner as vehicle speed increases.

[0004] Hybrid vehicles are generally equipped with a start-stop system in which the engine stops when the vehicle is stationary, and the engine fuel system stops when the vehicle is driven solely by the motor or braking. Consequently, the engine is unable to sufficiently evaporate water and fuel, leading to a problem where water and fuel accumulate in the oil. This results in the formation of an unstable emulsion, which negatively affects engine performance and causes corrosion and rust on engine parts.

[0005] The differences between hybrid vehicles and conventional automobiles are so significant that existing engine oils are not suitable for use in hybrid vehicles. Therefore, a lubricant composition specially designed for hybrid vehicles is required. More specifically, a lubricant composition is needed that improves corrosion and rust prevention for engine components in hybrid vehicles.

[0006] In one embodiment, a large amount of lubricating viscosity oil; and formula R 1 -(OR 2 ) n -OH, and R in the formula 1 is a branched or linear hydrocarbon group having 6 to 20 carbon atoms, and R 2 A hybrid vehicle lubricant composition is provided comprising an ethoxylated alcohol deemulsifier, wherein is a saturated hydrocarbon group having 2 to 4 carbon atoms and n is an integer from 1 to 10.

[0007] In another aspect, a method for reducing corrosion in a hybrid vehicle is provided, said method comprising a large amount of lubricating viscosity oil in the engine of said hybrid vehicle; and formula R 1 -(OR 2 ) n -OH, and R in the formula 1 is a branched or linear hydrocarbon group having 6 to 20 carbon atoms, and R 2 The method includes the step of supplying a hybrid vehicle lubricant composition comprising an ethoxylated alcohol deemulsifier, wherein is a saturated hydrocarbon group having 2 to 4 carbon atoms and n is an integer from 1 to 10. Specific details for implementing the invention

[0008] Various modifications and alternative forms of the present disclosure are possible, but specific embodiments thereof are described in detail in this specification. However, the description of specific embodiments in this specification is not intended to limit the present disclosure to the specific form disclosed, but rather to encompass all modifications, equivalents, and alternatives that fall within the spirit and scope of the present disclosure as defined by the appended claims.

[0009] To aid in understanding the subject matter disclosed herein, numerous terms, abbreviations, or other abbreviations used herein are defined below. Any undefined terms, abbreviations, or abbreviations are understood to have the ordinary meaning used by those skilled in the art at the time of filing this application.

[0010] The following terms used in this specification have the following meanings unless explicitly stated otherwise.

[0011] "Large amount" means an amount exceeding 50 weight % of the composition.

[0012] "A small amount" means an amount of less than 50 weight % of the composition, expressed for the said additive and for the total mass of all additives present in the composition that are considered to be the active ingredients of the additive(s).

[0013] "Active ingredient," "active substance," or "oil-free" refers to additive substances that are not diluents or solvents.

[0014] The term "oil-soluble" means that an amount necessary to provide a desired level of activity or performance for a given additive can be incorporated by dissolving, dispersing, or suspending it in a lubricating oil. Generally, this means that at least 0.001 weight % of the additive can be incorporated into the lubricating oil composition. The term "fuel-soluble" is a similar expression for an additive dissolved, dispersed, or suspended in fuel.

[0015] An "engine" or "combustion engine" is a heat engine in which the combustion of fuel occurs in a combustion chamber. An "internal combustion engine" is a heat engine in which the combustion of fuel occurs within a confined space ("combustion chamber"). A "spark ignition engine" is a heat engine in which combustion is ignited by a spark, typically generated by a spark plug. This contrasts with a "compression ignition engine" (typically a diesel engine), where combustion is initiated solely by the heat generated during compression and fuel injection, without an external spark.

[0016] The term "hydrocarbyl" refers to a chemical functional group or moiety derived from a hydrocarbon, including saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons. Examples of hydrocarbyl groups include alkenyl, alkyl, polyalkenyl, polyalkyl, phenyl, etc.

[0017] All reported percentages are weight % based on the active ingredient (i.e., independent of the carrier or diluent) unless otherwise specified.

[0018] All ASTM standards mentioned in this specification are the most recent versions as of the filing date of this application.

[0019] The present invention provides a lubricating oil composition useful for engines that are particularly susceptible to corrosion and / or wear (e.g., engines of hybrid vehicles). The lubricating oil composition generally comprises (a) a large amount of lubricating viscosity oil; and (b) an ethoxylated alcohol deemulsifier.

[0028]

[0029] Structure 1

[0030]

[0031] Structure 2

[0032]

[0033] Structure 3

[0034] Generally, the ethoxylated alcohol deemulsifier is present in an amount ranging from about 0.15 to about 5.0 weight % based on the total weight of the lubricating oil composition. In one embodiment, one or more additive compounds may be present in the lubricating oil composition of the present disclosure in an amount ranging from about 0.15 to about 4.0 weight % based on the total weight of the lubricating oil composition. In another embodiment, one or more additive compounds may be present in the lubricating oil composition of the present disclosure in an amount ranging from about 0.15 to about 2.0 weight % based on the total weight of the lubricating oil composition.

[0035] lubricating oil composition

[0036] Lubricating viscosity oil (sometimes referred to as "base stock" or "base oil") is the main liquid component of a lubricant, to which additives and other possible oils are blended, for example, to produce the final lubricant (or lubricant composition). Base oils useful for preparing concentrates and from which lubricant compositions can be selected from natural (vegetable, animal, or mineral) and synthetic lubricants and mixtures thereof.

[0037] The definitions of base oils and base oils in this disclosure are identical to those provided in Appendix E of American Petroleum Institute (API) Publication 1509 ("API Base Oil Interchangeability Guidelines for Passenger Car Motor Oils and Diesel Engine Oils," December 2016). Group I base oils contain less than 90% saturation and / or more than 0.03% sulfur and have a viscosity index of 80 or greater and less than 120 when using the test methods specified in Table E-1. Group II base oils contain 90% or more saturation and less than 0.03% sulfur and have a viscosity index of 80 or greater and less than 120 when using the test methods specified in Table E-1. Group III base oils contain 90% or more saturation and less than 0.03% sulfur and have a viscosity index of 120 or greater when using the test methods specified in Table E-1. Group IV basic raw milks are polyalphaolefins (PAOs). Group V basic raw milks include all other basic raw milks not included in Groups I, II, III, or IV.

[0038] Natural oils include animal oils, vegetable oils (e.g., castor oil and lard), and mineral oils. Animal and vegetable oils with favorable thermal oxidative stability may be used. Among natural oils, mineral oils are preferred. Mineral oils vary greatly depending on their crude source, for example, whether they are paraffinic, naphthalene-based, or a mixture of paraffinic and naphthalene. Oils derived from coal or shale are also useful. Natural oils also vary depending on the methods used for their production and refining, such as the distillation range and whether they are straight-line, cracked, hydrogenated, or solvent-extracted.

[0039] Synthetic oils include hydrocarbon oils. Hydrocarbon oils include oils such as polymerized and copolymerized olefins (e.g., polybutylene, polypropylene, propylene isobutylene copolymer, ethylene-olefin copolymer, and ethylene-alphaolefin copolymer). Polyalphaolefin (PAO) oil base oils are commonly used synthetic hydrocarbon oils. For example, C8 to C 14 Olefins, e.g., C8, C 10 , C 12 , C 14 PAO derived from olefins or mixtures thereof can be utilized.

[0040] Other fluids for use as base oils include non-conventional or unusual base oils that are preferably processed or synthesized catalytically to provide high-performance characteristics.

[0041] Non-ordinary or unusual base oils / base oils include mixtures of base oil(s) derived from one or more gas-to-liquid (GTL) substances, and natural waxes or wax feedstocks, mineral and / or non-mineral wax feedstocks, e.g., slack wax, natural wax, and wax feedstocks, e.g., gas oil, wax fuel hydrocracking residue, wax raffinate, hydrocracking product, thermal cracking product, or other mineral, mineral oil, or even non-petroleum derived wax materials, e.g., isomerate / isodewaxate base oil(s) derived from wax materials obtained from liquefied coal or shale oil, and mixtures of such base oils.

[0042] The base oil for use in the lubricating oil composition of the present disclosure is any various oil corresponding to API Group I, Group II, Group III, Group IV, and Group V oils and mixtures thereof, preferably API Group II, Group III, Group IV, and Group V oils and mixtures thereof, more preferably Group III to Group V base oils, due to their excellent volatility, stability, viscosity, and cleanliness characteristics.

[0043] Typically, the above base oil is 100 o 2.5 to 20 mm in C (ASTM D445) 2 / s(e.g., 3 to 12 mm 2 / s, 4 to 10 mm 2 / s, or 4.5 to 8 mm 2 It has a kinematic viscosity in the range of / s.

[0044] The above lubricating oil composition may also contain conventional lubricating additives to provide auxiliary functions to provide a final lubricating oil composition in which these additives are dispersed or dissolved. For example, the above lubricating oil composition may be combined with antioxidants, ash-free dispersants, anti-wear additives, detergents such as metal detergents, rust inhibitors, dehazing agents, de-emulsifiers, friction reducers, metal deactivators, pour point depressants, viscosity modifiers, defoamers, auxiliary solvents, package admixtures, corrosion inhibitors, dyes, extreme pressure additives, and mixtures thereof. Various additives are known and commercially available. These additives, or compounds similar to them, may be used to prepare the lubricating oil composition of the present invention by general mixing procedures.

[0045] Each of the aforementioned additives is used in an amount that is functionally effective to impart desired properties to the lubricant when used. Thus, for example, if the additive is an ashless dispersant, the functionally effective amount of this ashless dispersant is sufficient to impart desired dispersion properties to the lubricant. Generally, the concentration of each of these additives, when used, may be in the range of about 0.001 to about 20 wt%, for example, about 0.01 to about 10 wt%, unless otherwise specified.

[0046] Additional lubricant additives

[0047] The lubricant compositions of the present disclosure may include other conventional additives, said additives may impart or improve desirable properties to the lubricant compositions in which they are dispersed or dissolved. Any additive known to those skilled in the art may be used in the lubricant compositions disclosed herein. Some suitable additives are described in Mortier et al., “Chemistry and Technology of Lubricants”, 2nd Edition, London, Springer, (1996); and Leslie R. Rudnick, “Lubricant Additives: Chemistry and Applications”, New York, Marcel Dekker, (2003), all of which are incorporated herein by reference. For example, the above lubricating oil composition may be mixed with antioxidants (e.g., alkylated diphenylamine, phenolic antioxidants), anti-wear additives, detergents, e.g., metal detergents, rust inhibitors, haze removers, de-emulsifiers, metal deactivators, friction reducers (e.g., ester-based friction reducers), viscosity modifiers (e.g., olefin copolymers), pour point depressants, defoamers (e.g., silicone-based defoamers), auxiliary solvents, corrosion inhibitors, dispersants, multifunctional agents, dyes, extreme pressure additives, and mixtures thereof. Various additives are known and commercially available. These additives, or compounds similar to them, may be used to produce the lubricating oil composition of the present disclosure by conventional mixing procedures.

[0048] In the manufacture of the above lubricating oil formulation, it is common practice to introduce the additive in the form of a 10 to 100 weight % active ingredient concentrate in a hydrocarbon oil, such as a mineral lubricating oil or other suitable solvent.

[0049] Generally, these concentrates can be diluted with 3 to 100 parts by weight, for example 5 to 40 parts by weight, of lubricating oil per part by weight of the additive package to form a final lubricant, such as crankcase motor oil. Of course, the purpose of the concentrates is to make handling of various materials not difficult or inconvenient and to facilitate dissolution or dispersion within the final mixture.

[0050] Each of the aforementioned additives is used in a functionally effective amount to impart the desired characteristics to the lubricant when used. Thus, for example, if the additive is a friction reducer, the functionally effective amount of this friction reducer is sufficient to impart the desired friction reduction characteristics to the lubricant.

[0051] Generally, when used, the concentration of each additive in the lubricating oil composition may be in the range of about 0.001 wt% to about 20 wt%, about 0.01 wt% to about 15 wt%, or about 0.1 wt% to about 10 wt%, about 0.005 wt% to about 5 wt%, or about 0.1 wt% to about 2.5 wt% based on the total weight of the lubricating oil composition. Additionally, the total amount of additives in the lubricating oil composition may be in the range of about 0.001 wt% to about 20 wt%, about 0.01 wt% to about 10 wt%, or about 0.1 wt% to about 5 wt% based on the total weight of the lubricating oil composition.

[0052] The following examples are provided to illustrate embodiments of the present disclosure, but are not intended to limit the present disclosure to the specific embodiments presented. Unless otherwise stated, all parts and percentages are by weight. All figures are approximations. It should be understood that if a numerical range is given, embodiments outside the stated range may also fall within the scope of the present disclosure. Specific details described in each example should not be construed as essential features of the present disclosure.

[0053] It should be understood that various modifications may be made to the embodiments disclosed herein. Accordingly, the above description should not be interpreted as restrictive, but merely as an example of a preferred embodiment. For example, the function described above and implemented as the best mode for carrying out the present disclosure is for illustrative purposes only. Other formulations and methods may be implemented by a person skilled in the art without departing from the scope and spirit of the present disclosure. Furthermore, a person skilled in the art will conceive other modifications within the scope and spirit of the claims appended to this specification.

[0055] The following examples are for illustrative purposes only and do not limit the scope of the disclosure in any way.

[0056] The above lubricant was evaluated by the Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) K2246 test, which has been slightly modified for hybrid vehicle lubricants. The JIS K2246 test is conducted by coating a test sample with the test oil and checking for the presence of rust on the sample. The modified JIS K2246 test differs from the standard JIS K2246 test only in that the test sample is coated with a mixture containing the test oil and distilled water. Consequently, the modified JIS K2246 test is more suitable for evaluating the expected rust prevention performance of vehicles susceptible to rust (e.g., hybrid vehicles). Table 1 summarizes the results of the modified JIS K2246 test.

[0057] Test specimen samples were placed in a humid cabinet at 49°C and greater than 95% relative humidity (RH) and left for 72 hours. The above test evaluated the performance of oil in preventing rust on metal materials or metal products composed mainly of iron and steel.

[0058] The ASTM D1748 test (wet cabinet rust test) was also performed in a similar manner. A lower rust grade indicates better corrosion protection performance. A grade of 10 or lower represents an acceptable grade.

[0059] A mixture containing test oil and distilled water was prepared according to the following steps.

[0060] 1. Put 30 ml of distilled water and 270 ml of test oil into a plastic container and mix.

[0061] 2. Transfer the mixture of test oil and distilled water into a 500 ml container.

[0062] 3. On the day of the JIS K2246 test, stir the mixture containing the test oil and distilled water, then shake it by hand for 30 seconds.

[0063] 4. Heat the test oil in a convection oven at 70°C for 30 minutes.

[0064] 5. After 30 minutes, remove the test oil from the oven and let it cool to room temperature.

[0065] 6. Just before immersing the test sample in the test oil, shake the test oil by hand again for 30 seconds.

[0066] 7. Start the JIS K2246 exam.

[0067] Comparative Example 1

[0068] To provide a final oil with a 5W-30 SAE viscosity grade, a lubricating oil composition containing a large amount of Group III lubricating viscosity base oil and the following additives was prepared.
