[0034] Hereinafter, embodiments of the present invention will be described with reference to the drawings.
[0035] FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a display device according to an embodiment of the present invention.
[0036] Referring to FIG. 1, the display device (DD) has a rectangular shape having a short side in the first direction (DR1) and a long side in the second direction (DR2) that intersects the first direction (DR1). However, the shape of the display device (DD) is not limited to this, and a display device (DD) of various shapes may be provided.
[0037] The display device (DD) may be a foldable electronic device. Specifically, the display device (DD) according to an embodiment of the present invention may be folded based on folding axes (FX1, FX2) extended in a predetermined direction. Hereinafter, a state folded based on the folding axes (FX1, FX2) is defined as a folded state, and a state not folded is defined as a non-folded state.
[0038] Folding axes (FX1, FX2) may be extended in a first direction (DR1) or a second direction (DR2). In one embodiment of the present invention, the folding axis extended in the second direction (DR2) is defined as the first folding axis (FX1), and the folding axis extended in the first direction (DR1) is defined as the second folding axis (FX2). The display device (DD) may include only one of the first folding axis (FX1) and the second folding axis (FX2). That is, the display device (DD) may be folded based on either the first folding axis (FX1) or the second folding axis (FX2).
[0039] The display device (DD) according to the present invention may be a large display device such as a television or monitor, as well as a medium-sized display device such as a mobile phone, tablet, car navigation system, or game console. These are merely examples, and it is understood that they may be adopted in other electronic devices without departing from the concept of the present invention.
[0040] As illustrated in FIG. 1, the display device (DD) can display an image (IM) toward a third direction (DR3) on a display surface (IS) parallel to each of the first direction (DR1) and the second direction (DR2). The display surface (IS) on which the image (IM) is displayed may correspond to the front surface of the display device (DD).
[0041] The display surface (IS) of the display device (DD) can be divided into multiple regions. The display surface (IS) of the display device (DD) may have a display area (DA) and a non-display area (NDA) defined.
[0042] The display area (DA) may be an area where an image (IM) is displayed, and the user perceives the image (IM) through the display area (DA). The display area (DA) may be rectangular in shape. The non-display area (NDA) may surround the display area (DA). Accordingly, the shape of the display area (DA) may be substantially defined by the non-display area (NDA). However, this is illustrated as an example, and the non-display area (NDA) may be placed adjacent to only one side of the display area (DA) or may be omitted. A display device (DD) according to an embodiment of the present invention may include various embodiments and is not limited to any one embodiment.
[0043] The non-display area (NDA) is an area adjacent to the display area (DA) where the image (IM) is not displayed. The bezel area of the display device (DD) can be defined by the non-display area (NDA).
[0044] The non-display area (NDA) may surround the display area (DA). However, this is illustrated as an example, and the non-display area (NDA) may be adjacent to only some of the edges of the display area (DA) and is not limited to any one embodiment.
[0045] The display device (DD) according to the present invention can detect user input applied from the outside. User input includes various forms of external input, such as parts of the user's body, light, heat, or pressure. Additionally, user input may include input using a device such as a touch pen or a stylus pen. Furthermore, the display device (DD) may detect user input applied to the side or back surface of the display device (DD) depending on the structure of the display device (DD), and is not limited to any one embodiment.
[0046] FIG. 2a is a drawing showing the display device illustrated in FIG. 1 in an in-folded state along the first folding axis (FX1), and FIG. 2b is a drawing showing the display device illustrated in FIG. 1 in an out-folded state along the first folding axis (FX1).
[0047] Referring to FIGS. 1 and FIGS. 2a, the display device (DD) can be folded inward with respect to the first folding axis (FX1).
[0048] Multiple regions may be defined in the display device (DD) according to the operating mode. The multiple regions may be divided into a folding region (FA) and at least one non-folding region (NFA1, NFA2). The folding region (FA) is defined between the two non-folding regions (NFA1, NFA2).
[0049] As an example of the present invention, non-folding regions (NFA1, NFA2) may include a first non-folding region (NFA1) and a second non-folding region (NFA2). The first non-folding region (NFA1) is adjacent to one side of the folding region (FA) in the first direction (DR1), and the second non-folding region (NFA2) is adjacent to the other side of the folding region (FA) in the first direction (DR1).
[0050] The display device (DD) can be in-folded or out-folded. Here, in-folding refers to the display surfaces (IS) being folded to face each other, and out-folding refers to the rear surfaces of the display device (DD) being folded to face each other.
[0051] The folding area (FA) is an area that is folded based on the first folding axis (FX1) and is substantially an area that forms a curvature. Here, the first folding axis (FX1) can be extended along the second direction (DR2), that is, a direction parallel to the long side of the display device (DD) (long side direction).
[0052] The display device (DD) illustrated in FIG. 2a can be in-folded so that the display surface (IS) of the first non-folding area (NFA1) and the display surface (IS) of the second non-folding area (NFA2) face each other.
[0053] Referring to FIG. 2b, the display device (DD) may be out-folded with respect to the first folding axis (FX1). When the display device (DD) is out-folded, the display surface (IS) may be exposed to the outside.
[0054] In an exemplary embodiment, the display device (DD) may be capable of both in-folding and out-folding, but in the following description, the display device (DD) of the present invention is described as being folded in either an in-folding or out-folding state as an example.
[0055] FIG. 3a is a drawing showing the display device illustrated in FIG. 1 in an in-folded state along the second folding axis (FX2), and FIG. 3b is a drawing showing the display device illustrated in FIG. 1 in an out-folded state along the second folding axis (FX2).
[0056] Referring to FIGS. 3a and 3b, the display device (DD) can be folded inward or outward with respect to the second folding axis (FX2). The second folding axis (FX2) can extend along the first direction (DR1) and may be a direction parallel to the short side of the display device (DD) (short side direction).
[0057] In this embodiment, one folding region (FA) is defined in the display device (DD), but the present invention is not limited thereto. According to another embodiment of the present invention, a plurality of folding regions may be defined in the display device (DD).
[0058] FIG. 4 is a perspective view of a display module (DM) according to one embodiment of the present invention.
[0059] Referring to FIG. 4, a display module (DM) according to one embodiment of the present invention may include a display panel (DP) for displaying an image and a window module (WM) disposed on the display panel (DP). The display module (DM) constitutes a part of a display device (DD, illustrated in FIG. 1), and in particular, the display module (DM) may provide a display surface (IS, see FIG. 1) of the display device (DD).
[0060] The display panel (DP) may be a flexible display panel. Accordingly, the display panel (DP) may be folded or unfolded around a first folding axis (FX1). As an example of the present invention, the display panel (DP) may be an organic light-emitting display panel.
[0061] The display panel (DP) can be divided into a folding area (FA), a first non-folding area (NFA1), and a second non-folding area (NFA2). Meanwhile, the display panel (DP) can be divided into a non-bending area (NBA) and a bending area (BA). Some of the folding area (FA), the first non-folding area (NFA1), and the second non-folding area (NFA2) of the display panel (DP) may be included in the non-bending area (NBA), and the remaining part of the second non-folding area (NFA2) may be included in the bending area (BA). The bending area (BA) will be described in detail later.
[0062] The upper surface of the window module (WM) defines the display surface (IS) of the display device (DD) shown in FIG. 1. The window module (WM) may be optically transparent. Accordingly, an image generated from the display panel (DP) can pass through the window module (WM) and be easily recognized by the user.
[0063] The window module (WM) may be made of a flexible material. Accordingly, the window module (WM) can be folded or unfolded around the first folding axis (FX1). That is, the shape of the window module (WM) can be deformed together with the shape of the display panel (DP).
[0064] The window module (WM) transmits an image from the display panel (DP) and simultaneously mitigates external impact, thereby preventing the display panel (DP) from being damaged or malfunctioning due to external impact. External impact refers to an external force, such as pressure or stress, that causes defects in the display panel (DP). The window module (WM) can prevent defects in the display panel (DP) by mitigating bending deformation, compression deformation, and / or tensile deformation of the display panel (DP) caused by point impact and surface impact.
[0065] One or more functional layers (FC) may be disposed between the display panel (DP) and the window module (WM). In one example of the present invention, the functional layer (FC) may be an anti-reflection layer that blocks external light reflection. The anti-reflection layer can prevent the problem of the elements constituting the display panel (DP) being visible from the outside due to external light incident through the front of the display device (DD). The anti-reflection layer may include a polarizing film and / or a phase delay film. The number of phase delay films and the phase delay length (λ / 4 or λ / 2) of the phase delay films may be determined according to the operating principle of the anti-reflection layer.
[0066] The functional layer (FC) may further include an input sensing layer that detects user input. The input sensing layer may be formed as a separate layer from the display panel (DP) and bonded through an adhesive layer. In another example, the input sensing unit may be integrated into the display panel (DP) through at least one continuous process. That is, the input sensing unit may be placed directly on a thin film encapsulation layer (not shown) of the display panel (DP). Here, "direct placement" means that the input sensing unit is placed on the display panel (DP) without a separate adhesive member. In an exemplary embodiment, the input sensing unit is placed on the upper surface of the display panel (DP), but is not limited thereto. In another embodiment, the input sensing layer may be placed on the lower surface of the display panel.
[0067] The window module (WM) and the functional layer (FC) can be bonded to each other through the first adhesive layer (AL1). The display panel (DP) and the functional layer (FC) can be bonded to each other through the second adhesive layer (AL2).
[0068] The first adhesive layer (AL1) and the second adhesive layer (AL2) may each be optically transparent. The first adhesive layer (AL1) and the second adhesive layer (AL2) may each be an adhesive layer produced by curing a liquid adhesive material after application, or a separately produced adhesive sheet. For example, the first adhesive layer (AL1) and the second adhesive layer (AL2) may each be a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA), an optical clear adhesive (OCA), or an optical clear resin (OCR).
[0069] A protective film (PF) may be disposed on the rear surface of the display panel (DP). The protective film (PF) may include a polymer material. The protective film (PF) may be a layer for protecting the display panel (DP) from impact by absorbing externally applied shock. The protective film (PF) may be adhered to the rear surface of the display panel (DP) through a third adhesive layer (AL3).
[0070] Although FIG. 4 illustrates that the protective film (PF) is placed only on the rear side of the display panel (DP), the present invention is not limited thereto. For example, the display module (DM) may further include an upper protective film placed between the display panel (DP) and the functional layer (FC).
[0071] The materials constituting the protective film (PF) are not limited to plastic resins and may include organic / inorganic composite materials. The protective film (PF) may also include a porous organic layer and inorganic materials filled in the pores of the organic layer.
[0072] Figure 5 is a plan view of the display module shown in Figure 4.
[0073] The display module (DM) shown in FIG. 5 may be in a state where the window module (WM), functional layer (FC), display panel (DP), and protective film (PF) shown in FIG. 4 are all combined.
[0074] The display module (DM) may further include a flexible circuit board (FCB) connected to a display panel (DP) and a driver chip (DIC) mounted on the flexible circuit board (FCB). The flexible circuit board (FCB) may be connected to a main circuit board (MCB). Components such as a control chip, a plurality of passive components, and active components may be mounted on the main circuit board (MCB). The main circuit board (MCB) may be made of a flexible film, similar to the flexible circuit board (FCB).
[0075] In this embodiment, the display module (DM) includes a chip-on-film (COF) structure in which a driving chip (DIC) is mounted on a flexible circuit board (FCB). However, the present invention is not limited thereto. For example, the display module (DM) may include a chip-on-panel (COP) or chip-on-glass (COG) structure in which a driving chip (DIC) is mounted on a display panel (DP).
[0076] Figure 6 is a cross-sectional view taken along the cutting line I-I' shown in Figure 5.
[0077] Referring to FIGS. 5 and 6, the display module (DM) may include a flexible display panel (DP). In FIG. 6, the display panel (DP) is briefly illustrated as a single layer. Although not illustrated in the drawings, the display panel (DP) may include a base layer, a circuit layer, a light-emitting element layer, and an encapsulation layer.
[0078] The display panel (DP) may be divided into a bending area (BA) and a non-bending area (NBA). The non-bending area (NBA) may be an area that includes the display area (DA) and the non-display area (NDA) of the display panel (DP). Additionally, some of the folding area (FA), the first non-folding area (NFA1), and the second non-folding area (NFA2) of the display panel (DP) may be included in the non-bending area (NBA), and the remaining portion of the second non-folding area (NFA2) may be included in the bending area (BA). The bending area (BA) of the display panel (DP) may be bent toward the rear of the display panel (DP) with a predetermined curvature.
[0079] The bending region (BA) includes a curvature region (CA) and a counter region (FAA). The curvature region (CA) is adjacent to the non-bending region (NBA) and is the region that is substantially bent. The counter region (FAA) is adjacent to the curvature region (CA) and faces the non-bending region (NBA) in the bent state. A flexible circuit board (FCB) is connected to the counter region (FAA) of the display panel (DP).
[0080] The protective film (PF) may be positioned corresponding to the non-bending region (NBA) and the opposing region (FAA), and may not be positioned in the curvature region (CA). A bending open portion (OPP) may be defined in the protective film (PF) to correspond to the curvature region (CA). By removing the protective film (PF) from the curvature region (CA), stress generated in the curvature region (CA) during bending can be reduced. When the bending open portion (OPP) is defined in the protective film (PF), as an example of the present invention, a third adhesive layer (AL3) may be removed corresponding to the bending open portion (OPP).
[0081] In another embodiment of the present invention, the protective film (PF) may have a groove defined to correspond to the curvature region (CA). That is, the protective film (PF) may be formed thinner in the curvature region (CA) than in other regions (NBA, FAA).
[0082] FIG. 7 is an exploded perspective view of a display device according to one embodiment of the present invention, and FIG. 8a is a cross-sectional view cut along the cutting line II-II' shown in FIG. 7.
[0083] Referring to FIGS. 7 and FIGS. 8a, the display device (DD) includes a display module (DM) and a cover panel (CVP). The display module (DM) may include a window module (WM), a functional layer (FC), a display panel (DP), and a protective film (PF) as shown in FIGS. 4. Since the display module (DM) has the same structure as the display module (DM) shown in FIGS. 4 and FIGS. 5, a detailed description of the display module (DM) is omitted.
[0084] A cover panel (CVP) is disposed on the lower part of the display module (DM). The cover panel (CVP) can be coupled to the back surface of the display module (DM). The cover panel (CVP) can support the back surface of the display module (DM). The cover panel (CVP) may have a structure in which a plurality of layers are stacked in a third direction (DR3).
[0085] In one example of the present invention, the cover panel (CVP) may include a support plate (SP) and a fourth adhesive layer (AL4). The support plate (SP) is disposed on the back surface of the display module (DM). The support plate (SP) may be a metal plate. The support plate (SP) may be a stainless steel plate. The strength of the support plate (SP) may be greater than the strength of the display module (DM).
[0086] The support plate (SP) may include a first support plate (SP1) that supports a first non-folding area (NFA1) of the display module (DM) and a second support plate (SP2) that supports a second non-folding area (NFA2) of the display module (DM). The first and second support plates (SP1, SP2) may have a plate shape.
[0087] The first support plate (SP1) and the second support plate (SP2) are arranged to be spaced apart from each other in the first direction (DR1). The first support plate (SP1) and the second support plate (SP2) may be spaced apart in correspondence with the folding area (FA). The first support plate (SP1) may partially overlap with the folding area (FA), and the second support plate (SP2) may partially overlap with the folding area (FA). That is, the distance between the first support plate (SP1) and the second support plate (SP2) in the first direction (DR1) may be smaller than the width of the folding area (FA).
[0088] The fourth adhesive layer (AL4) is placed between the support plate (SP) and the display module (DM). The fourth adhesive layer (AL4) can be placed on the front side of the back side of the display module (DM).
[0089] The cover panel (CVP) further includes a buffer film (BF) and a fifth adhesive layer (AL5). The buffer film (BF) is provided between the fourth adhesive layer (AL4) and the display module (DM). The buffer film (BF) may include a polymer material. The buffer film (BF) may be a layer for absorbing externally applied shock. The buffer film (BF) may include any one of polyurethane, plastic polyurethane, or urethane rubber. The buffer film (BF) may be adhered to the back surface of the display module (DM) through the fifth adhesive layer (AL5). In other embodiments, the fifth adhesive layer (AL5) and the buffer film (BF) may be omitted.
[0090] In FIGS. 7 and 8a, a structure in which the buffer film (BF) is composed of a single layer is illustrated, but the present invention is not limited thereto. The buffer film (BF) may include a plurality of layers, and their positions are not limited thereto.
[0091] A support plate (SP) can be fixed to a buffer film (BF) by the fourth adhesive layer (AL4). The support plate (SP) can be attached to the back surface of the buffer film (BF) by the fourth adhesive layer (AL4). The fourth adhesive layer (AL4) and the buffer film (BF) are formed entirely over the folding region (FA) and the first and second non-folding regions (NFA1, NFA2).
[0092] The fifth adhesive layer (AL5) is provided between the buffer film (BF) and the display module (DM) to attach the buffer film (BF) to the back surface of the display module (DM).
[0093] Each of the fourth and fifth adhesive layers (AL4, AL5) may be optically transparent. Each of the fourth and fifth adhesive layers (AL4, AL5) may be an adhesive layer produced by curing a liquid adhesive material after application, or an adhesive sheet produced separately. For example, each of the fourth and fifth adhesive layers (AL4, AL5) may be a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA), an optical clear adhesive (OCA), or an optical clear resin (OCR).
[0094] FIGS. 7 and 8a illustrate an example of the present invention in which the support plate (SP) comprises two support plates (SP1, SP2), but is not limited thereto. That is, as the number of folding axes (FX1) increases, the support plate (SP) may comprise a plurality of support plates separated based on the folding axes (FX1). The first and second support plates (SP1, SP2) may be arranged corresponding to each of the non-folding regions.
[0095] When the curvature region (CA) of the display module (DM) is bent, the opposing region (FA) faces the non-bending region (NBA), and the circuit board (FCB) and main circuit board (MCB) connected to the opposing region (FAA) are arranged parallel to the non-bending region (NBA) of the display panel (DP). The first and second support plates (SP1, SP2) may be arranged overlapping the non-bending region (NBA). Additionally, after the display module (DM) is bent, the circuit board (FCB) and main circuit board (MCB) may be seated on the back surface of the second support plate (SP2).
[0096] Although not illustrated, the display device (DD) may further include an adhesive layer for attaching a circuit board (FCB) and a main circuit board (MCB) to a second support plate (SP2). Accordingly, the circuit board (FCB) and the main circuit board (MCB) can be fixed to the back surface of the second support plate (SP2).
[0097] Although not illustrated, the display device (DD) further includes a rear case positioned below the support plate (SP), and components necessary for the operation of the display device (DD), such as a battery and a main PCB, may be mounted in the space between the support plate (SP) and the rear case.
[0098] FIG. 8b is an enlarged view of the folding area (FA) of the cover panel (CVP) illustrated in FIG. 8a. FIG. 8c is an exemplary view showing the display device (DD) illustrated in FIG. 8a in an in-folded state with respect to the first folding axis (FX1).
[0099] Referring to FIGS. 8b and 8c, the back surface of the fourth adhesive layer (AL4) includes an uneven pattern (UEP) in the folding area (FA). The uneven pattern (UEP) includes a first uneven pattern (UEP1), a second uneven pattern (UEP2), and a third uneven pattern (UEP3). The first uneven pattern (UEP1), the second uneven pattern (UEP2), and the third uneven pattern (UEP3) have the same shape, but are not limited thereto. For example, the first uneven pattern (UEP1) and the second uneven pattern (UEP2) may have the same shape, and the third uneven pattern (UEP3) may have a different shape from the first uneven pattern (UEP1) and the second uneven pattern (UEP2). In another example, the first uneven pattern (UEP1), the second uneven pattern (UEP2), and the third uneven pattern (UEP3) may have different shapes.
[0100] The first uneven pattern (UEP1) of the fourth adhesive layer (AL4) overlaps the first support plate (SP1). The first uneven pattern (UEP1) of the fourth adhesive layer (AL4) may have a sawtooth-like shape in the third direction (DR3) to minimize the adhesion area with the first support plate (SP1).
[0101] The second uneven pattern (UEP2) of the fourth adhesive layer (AL4) overlaps the second support plate (SP2). The second uneven pattern (UEP2) of the fourth adhesive layer (AL4) may have a sawtooth-like shape in the third direction (DR3) to minimize the adhesion area with the second support plate (SP2).
[0102] With the display device (DD) unfolded, the first uneven pattern (UEP1) and the second uneven pattern (UEP2) of the fourth adhesive layer (AL4) come into contact with the first support plate (SP1) and the second support plate (SP2), respectively.
[0103] As shown in FIG. 8c, when the display device (DD) is in-folded with respect to the first folding axis (FX1), the first uneven pattern (UEP1) and the second uneven pattern (UEP2) of the fourth adhesive layer (AL4) are spaced apart from the first support plate (SP1) and the second support plate (SP2).
[0104] The fourth adhesive layer (AL4) is composed of a material having adhesive properties to fix the first support plate (SP1) and the second support plate (SP2) to the buffer film (BF). To weaken the adhesive properties of the fourth adhesive layer (AL4) in the folding area (FA), the folding area of the fourth adhesive layer (AL4) may be heat-cured or photo-cured. However, the adhesive properties of the fourth adhesive layer (AL4) may be maintained to some extent even after the curing process is performed. In an embodiment of the present invention, the back surface of the fourth adhesive layer (AL4) includes an uneven pattern (UEP) in the folding area (FA). The uneven pattern (UEP) of the fourth adhesive layer (AL4) allows the contact area between the fourth adhesive layer (AL4) and the first support plate (SP1) and the second support plate (SP2) in the folding area (FA) to be minimized. Accordingly, when the display device (DD) is in-folded with respect to the first folding axis (FX1), the first support plate (SP1) and the second support plate (SP2) can be easily separated from the fourth adhesive layer (AL4) of the folding area (FA).
[0105] Meanwhile, unwanted particles may be introduced between the first support plate (SP1) and the second support plate (SP2) during the production process. Since the fourth adhesive layer (AL4) has adhesive strength, the introduced particles can be attached to the fourth adhesive layer (AL4). According to an embodiment of the present invention, the fourth adhesive layer (AL4) includes an uneven pattern (UEP), so the adhesion area with the particles is minimized, and the adhesion between the particles and the fourth adhesive layer (AL4) is not strong. Therefore, the particles can be separated from the fourth adhesive layer (AL4) by the air flow or air gap between the uneven pattern (UEP) of the fourth adhesive layer (AL4) and the particles.
[0106] FIGS. 9a to 9e are drawings exemplarily showing the back surface of the fourth adhesive layer (AL4).
[0107] The back surface of the fourth adhesive layer (AL4) illustrated in FIGS. 9a to 9e has different uneven patterns (UEPa to UEPe) in the pattern area (PA). The uneven patterns (UEPa to UEPe) may be patterns that can minimize the adhesive area with the first support plate (SP1) and the second support plate (SP2).
[0108] Referring to FIG. 9e, the uneven pattern (UEPe) may include a first uneven pattern (UEPe1), a second uneven pattern (UEPe2), and a third uneven pattern (UEPe3). The first uneven pattern (UEPe1) may overlap with the first support plate (SP1) shown in FIG. 7, and the third uneven pattern (UEPe3) may overlap with the second support plate (SP2) shown in FIG. 7.
[0109] The first uneven pattern (UEPe1) and the third uneven pattern (UEPe3) have the same shape and may have a shape to minimize the adhesion area with the first support plate (SP1) and the second support plate (SP2). The second uneven pattern (UEPe2) may have a different shape from the first uneven pattern (UEPe1) and the third uneven pattern (UEPe3).
[0110] As illustrated in FIGS. 9a to 9e, the shape of the uneven pattern (UEPa to UEPe) formed in the pattern area (PA) of the fourth adhesive layer (AL4) can be varied. Furthermore, the shape of the uneven pattern formed in the pattern area (PA) of the fourth adhesive layer (AL4) is not limited to the examples illustrated in FIGS. 9a to 9e. The pattern area (PA) of the fourth adhesive layer (AL4) overlaps with the folding area (FA) of the display module (DM) illustrated in FIG. 8a and may have substantially the same area.
[0111] FIGS. 10a to 10d are cross-sectional views illustrating the manufacturing process of a display device according to the present invention.
[0112] Referring to FIG. 10a, a folding area (FA) that is folded around a virtual first folding axis (FX1) on a plane, and a first non-folding area (NFA1) and a second non-folding area (NFA2) adjacent to both sides of the folding area (FA) are defined, and a display module (DM) for displaying images is prepared.
[0113] Although not shown in the drawing, a protective film may be attached to the upper surface of the display module (DM). The protective film may be intended to prevent damage to the upper surface of the display module (DM) during the manufacturing process and to facilitate handling during the manufacturing process. Since this protective film is removed during the manufacturing process, it is desirable to ensure that the adhesive force between the protective film and the display module (DM) is not strong. Although not shown in the drawing, the protective film may include an adhesive layer and a protective film base.
[0114] Meanwhile, the protective component (PP) includes a first liner (LNR1), a second liner (LNR2), a fourth adhesive layer (AL4), a fifth adhesive layer (AL5), and a buffer film (BF).
[0115] The fourth adhesive layer (AL4) may be disposed on the lower surface of the buffer film (BF), and the fifth adhesive layer (AL5) may be disposed on the upper surface of the buffer film (BF). The fourth adhesive layer (AL4) may include a thermosetting resin or a photosetting resin.
[0116] Each of the first liner (LNR1) and the second liner (LNR2) may be a carrier film designed to prevent damage to the fifth adhesive layer (AL5) and the fourth adhesive layer (AL4) during the manufacturing process and to facilitate handling during the manufacturing process. Since the first liner (LNR1) and the second liner (LNR2) are removed during the manufacturing process, it is desirable to ensure that the adhesive force between the first liner (LNR1) and the second liner (LNR2) and the fifth adhesive layer (AL5) and the fourth adhesive layer (AL4) is not strong.
[0117] The first liner (LNR1) of the protective component (PP) is removed, and the protective component (PP) is directly attached to the lower surface of the display module (DM) using the fifth adhesive layer (AL5) of the protective component (PP).
[0118] In an exemplary embodiment, the display module (DM) may be in a combined state with a window module (WM), a functional layer (FC), a display panel (DP), and a protective film (PF) as shown in FIG. 6. In another embodiment, the display module (DM) may include only the display panel (DP). That is, the protective component (PP) may be attached to the lower surface of the display panel (DP) using a fifth adhesive layer (AL5) of the protective component (PP).
[0119] After the protective component (PP) is attached to the display module (DM), the second liner (LNR2) can be removed. In another embodiment, the protective component (PP) may not include the first liner (LNR1) and the second liner (LNR2). In another embodiment, the protective component (PP) may not include the buffer film (BF) and may include only the first liner (LNR1), the second liner (LNR2), and the fourth adhesive layer (AL4). In this case, the first liner (LNR1) and the second liner (LNR2) are each placed on the upper and lower surfaces of the fourth adhesive layer (AL4). Additionally, the fourth adhesive layer (AL4) may be directly attached to the lower surface of the display module (DM).
[0120] Referring to FIG. 10b, a pattern generating device (JG) is placed on the lower part of the fourth adhesive layer (AL4). The pattern generating device (JG) may include a pattern (UEP_J) for forming irregularities on its upper surface.
[0121] An uneven pattern can be formed in the pattern area (PA) of the fourth adhesive layer (AL4) corresponding to the folding area (FA) of the display module (DM) using a pattern generating device (JG). The fourth adhesive layer (AL4) may include a material having a modulus such that it can be deformed by an external force. Accordingly, a temporary uneven pattern (WRK) can be formed on the lower surface (first surface) of the pattern area (PA) of the fourth adhesive layer (AL4) by bonding with and pressure from the pattern (UEP_J) for forming unevenness of the pattern generating device (JG).
[0123] Referring to FIG. 10c, a temporary uneven pattern (WRK) is formed on the lower surface of the pattern area (PA) of the fourth adhesive layer (AL4). Since the fourth adhesive layer (AL4) has a modulus that can be changed by an external force, the temporary uneven pattern (WRK) is also in a deformable state.
[0124] The fourth adhesive layer (AL4) includes a first non-pattern area (NPA1) adjacent to one side of the pattern area (PA) and a second non-pattern area (NPA2) adjacent to the other side of the pattern area (PA).
[0125] The first mask (MSK1) is placed below the first non-pattern area (NPA1). The second mask (MSK2) is placed below the second non-pattern area (NPA2). The first mask (MSK1) and the second mask (MSK2) may be composed of a material that does not transmit ultraviolet (UV) light.
[0126] A light generating device (LD) is disposed below the pattern area (PA) of the fourth adhesive layer (AL4). The light generating device (LD) may be a device that generates ultraviolet (UV) light.
[0127] The pattern area (PA) of the fourth adhesive layer (AL4) can be cured by ultraviolet (UV) light output from a light generating device (LD).
[0128] The light generating device (LD) can cure the pattern area (PA) by covering the entire pattern area (PA) of the fourth adhesive layer (AL4) at a fixed position. In another embodiment, the light generating device (LD) can cure the pattern area (PA) of the fourth adhesive layer (AL4) by generating UV light while moving in a predetermined direction. The degree of curing of the pattern area (PA) of the fourth adhesive layer (AL4) can be controlled by adjusting conditions such as the intensity, wavelength, temperature, and UV light irradiation time of the UV light output from the light generating device (LD).
[0129] Referring to FIGS. 10c and 10d, an uneven pattern (UEP) can be formed after the pattern area (PA) of the fourth adhesive layer (AL4) is cured by a light generating device (LD). After removing the first mask (MSK1) and the second mask (MSK2), a support plate (SP) including a first support plate (SP1) and a second support plate (SP2) is disposed on the lower surface of the fourth adhesive layer (AL4). The fourth adhesive layer (AL4) bonds the first support plate (SP1) and the second support plate (SP2) to a buffer film (BF).
[0130] The first support plate (SP1) supports the first non-folding area (NFA1) of the display module (DM), and the second support plate (SP2) can support the second non-folding area (NFA2) of the display module (DM).
[0131] The first support plate (SP1) and the second support plate (SP2) are arranged to be spaced apart from each other in the first direction (DR1).
[0132] The uneven pattern (UEP) of the fourth adhesive layer (AL4) includes a first uneven pattern (UEP1), a second uneven pattern (UEP2), and a third uneven pattern (UEP3). The first uneven pattern (UEP1) (or the first stage of the uneven pattern (UEP)) may contact a part of the first support plate (SP1), and the second uneven pattern (UEP2) (or the second stage of the uneven pattern (UEP)) may contact a part of the second support plate (SP2). The adhesive area between the fourth adhesive layer (AL4) and the first support plate (SP1) and the second support plate (SP2) can be minimized by the first uneven pattern (UEP1) and the second uneven pattern (UEP2). The first uneven pattern (UEP1), the second uneven pattern (UEP2), and the third uneven pattern (UEP3) may have the same shape or different shapes. The shapes of the first uneven pattern (UEP1), the second uneven pattern (UEP2), and the third uneven pattern (UEP3) can be determined according to the pattern for forming unevenness (UEP_J) of the pattern generating device (JG) shown in FIG. 10b.
[0133] A cover panel (CVP) can be formed by combining the first support plate (SP1) and the second support plate (SP2) with the fourth adhesive layer (AL4). The cover panel (CVP) can be combined with the back surface of the display module (DM) to support the back surface of the display module (DM).
[0134] FIG. 11a is a cross-sectional view of a display device (DD2) according to another embodiment of the present invention. FIG. 11b is an enlarged view of the folding area (FA) of the cover panel (CVP2) shown in FIG. 11a. FIG. 11c is a diagram exemplarily showing the display device (DD2) shown in FIG. 11a in an in-folded state with respect to the first folding axis (FX1).
[0135] For components of the display device (DD2) shown in FIGS. 11a to 11c that are similar to the display device (DD) shown in FIGS. 8a to 8b, the same extraction symbol is used, and redundant descriptions are omitted.
[0136] Referring to FIGS. 11a, 11b, and 11c, the cover panel (CVP2) may include a support plate (SP) and a fourth adhesive layer (AL4). The support plate (SP) is placed on the back surface of the display module (DM). The support plate (SP) may be a metal plate. The support plate (SP) may be a stainless steel plate. The strength of the support plate (SP) may be greater than the strength of the display module (DM).
[0137] The cover panel (CVP2) further includes a buffer film (BF) and a fifth adhesive layer (AL5).
[0138] The fourth adhesive layer (AL4) is positioned between the support plate (SP) and the display module (DM). The fourth adhesive layer (AL4) may be positioned corresponding to the front and back sides of the display module (DM). The support plate (SP) may be fixed to the buffer film (BF) by the fourth adhesive layer (AL4). The support plate (SP) may be attached to the back side of the buffer film (BF) by the fourth adhesive layer (AL4). The fourth adhesive layer (AL4) and the buffer film (BF) are formed entirely over the folding area (FA) and the first and second non-folding areas (NFA1, NFA2).
[0139] The support plate (SP) includes a first support plate (SP1) and a second support plate (SP2).
[0140] The upper surface of each of the first support plate (SP1) and the second support plate (SP2) includes a first uneven pattern (UE1) and a second uneven pattern (UE2) in the folding area (FA). The first uneven pattern (UE1) and the second uneven pattern (UE2) have the same shape, but are not limited thereto. In other examples, the first uneven pattern (UE1) and the second uneven pattern (UE2) may have different shapes.
[0141] The first uneven pattern (UE1) of the first support plate (SP1) overlaps the fourth adhesive layer (AL4). The second uneven pattern (UE2) of the second support plate (SP2) overlaps the fourth adhesive layer (AL4). The first uneven pattern (UE1) and the second uneven pattern (UE2) may have a sawtooth-like shape in the third direction (DR3) to minimize the adhesive area with the fourth adhesive layer (AL4). The first uneven pattern (UE1) and the second uneven pattern (UE2) are not limited to a sawtooth shape and may be changed to a shape that minimizes the adhesive area with the fourth adhesive layer (AL4).
[0142] When the display device (DD2) is unfolded, the first uneven pattern (UE1) of the first support plate (SP1) and the second uneven pattern (UE2) of the second support plate (SP2) come into contact with the fourth adhesive layer (AL4).
[0143] As illustrated in FIG. 11c, the first uneven pattern (UE1) of the first support plate (SP1) and the second uneven pattern (UE2) of the second support plate (SP2), which are in-folded with respect to the first folding axis (FX1) of the display device (DD2), are spaced apart from the fourth adhesive layer (AL4).
[0144] The first uneven pattern (UE1) of the first support plate (SP1) and the second uneven pattern (UE2) of the second support plate (SP2) can minimize the contact area between the fourth adhesive layer (AL4) and the first support plate (SP1) and the second support plate (SP2) in the folding area (FA). Therefore, when the display device (DD2) is in-folded with respect to the first folding axis (FX1), the first support plate (SP1) and the second support plate (SP2) can be easily separated from the fourth adhesive layer (AL4) in the folding area (FA).
