Abstract
Description
Technology Field
[0001] The present invention relates to a secondary battery, a battery pack including the same, and an automobile.
[0002] This application claims the benefit of the filing date of Korean Patent Application No. 10-2021-0160776 filed with the Korean Intellectual Property Office on November 19, 2021, the contents of which are incorporated herein in their entirety. Background Technology
[0003] Secondary batteries, which possess electrical characteristics such as high energy density and high applicability across product categories, are widely applied not only to portable devices but also to electric vehicles (EVs) or hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) driven by electric power sources.
[0004] These secondary batteries are attracting attention as a new energy source for improving eco-friendliness and energy efficiency, as they not only have the primary advantage of being able to drastically reduce the use of fossil fuels but also the advantage of not generating any by-products from the use of energy.
[0005] Currently, widely used types of secondary batteries include lithium-ion batteries, lithium-polymer batteries, nickel-cadmium batteries, nickel-hydrogen batteries, and nickel-zinc batteries. The operating voltage of these unit secondary battery cells, or unit battery cells, is approximately 2.5V to 4.5V. Therefore, if a higher output voltage is required, multiple battery cells are connected in series to form a battery pack. Additionally, depending on the charge and discharge capacity required for the battery pack, multiple battery cells are connected in parallel to form a battery pack. Accordingly, the number of battery cells included in the battery pack and the electrical connection type can be set in various ways depending on the required output voltage and / or charge and discharge capacity.
[0006] Meanwhile, cylindrical, prismatic, and pouch-type batteries are known as types of secondary battery cells. In the case of cylindrical batteries, an insulating separator is interposed between the positive and negative electrodes, and this is wound to form a jellyroll-shaped electrode assembly, which is then inserted into a battery can along with an electrolyte to constitute the battery.
[0007] At this time, as a positive terminal of a cylindrical secondary battery, the structure is being replaced with a rivet-type positive terminal that penetrates the bottom surface of the battery can instead of a cap of a sealing body that seals the opening of the conventional battery can, and accordingly, an insulator is being applied to insulate the negative electrode, which has the opposite polarity, from the member electrically connected to the positive terminal (e.g., positive current collector plate and end from which the positive tab is drawn out).
[0008] However, since the insulator has a thick shape that completely encloses both the positive current collector plate and the end where the positive tab is drawn out, unnecessary space is lost.
[0009] Therefore, the insulator occupies a large portion of the battery can's interior, which reduces the size of the electrode assembly that can be accommodated within the same can, and consequently leads to a problem of reduced capacity in the secondary battery. The problem to be solved
[0010] The present invention aims to provide a secondary battery to improve the problem of capacity reduction caused by a reduction in the diameter of an electrode assembly while efficiently securing insulation, and to provide a battery pack and an automobile including the same.
[0011] The present invention aims to provide a secondary battery with a simplified assembly process to improve process efficiency. means of solving the problem
[0012] The inventors have discovered that the above problem can be resolved by changing the shape of the insulator included in the secondary battery. Specifically, the inventors have discovered that by providing different insulating members at the portion where a current collector plate of opposite polarity contacts inside the battery can and at the portion where an electrode tab of opposite polarity contacts inside the battery can, additional space can be provided for the electrode assembly.
[0013] The present invention provides a secondary battery comprising the above technical features, a battery pack comprising the same, and an automobile.
[0014] One embodiment of the present invention provides a secondary battery comprising: an electrode assembly in which a first electrode, a separator, and a second electrode are sequentially stacked and wound; and a battery can that accommodates the electrode assembly and an electrolyte, wherein the battery can has a bottom portion on one side, an open portion on the other side opposite to the bottom portion, and a cylindrical side wall, and the electrode assembly has a first end portion into which the first electrode tab is drawn and a second end portion into which the second electrode tab is drawn, and the first end portion and the battery can are electrically connected, and the side wall of the battery can includes an insulating coating layer provided on an inner surface corresponding to the second end portion, and includes a second current collector plate electrically connected to the second electrode tab, and includes an insulating member provided between the second current collector plate and the bottom portion of the battery can.
[0015] In addition, one embodiment of the present invention provides a battery pack comprising one or more of the secondary batteries.
[0016] Finally, one embodiment according to the present invention provides a vehicle comprising one or more of the battery packs. Effects of the invention
[0017] According to an embodiment of the present invention, the process of insulating a current collector plate with opposite polarity to the battery can and an electrode end with opposite polarity to the battery can by wrapping them once with an insulating member (e.g., an insulator) and the process of additionally insulating the electrode end with opposite polarity by wrapping it one or more times with an additional insulating member (e.g., insulating tape) are omitted, so the insulation process is simplified while the desired insulation effect can be secured.
[0018] In addition, according to an embodiment of the present invention, when insulating both the current collector plate with opposite polarity to the battery can and the electrode end with opposite polarity to the battery can by wrapping them with a single thick insulating member (e.g., an insulator), the problem of the space that can be occupied by the electrode assembly being reduced is prevented, so the diameter of the electrode assembly that can be accommodated in a battery can of the same size can be increased.
[0019] In addition, according to an embodiment of the present invention, the insulating member may include a high-heat-resistant material and can exhibit an excellent heat dissipation effect when the internal temperature of the battery rises to a high temperature.
[0020] Accordingly, the secondary battery according to the embodiment of the present invention can increase battery capacity while maintaining insulation at an easy level, can expect a heat dissipation effect due to the rise in internal temperature, and enables the realization of high energy density and cost reduction. Brief explanation of the drawing

[0022] Terms and words used in this specification and claims are not limited to their ordinary or dictionary meanings, and must be interpreted in a meaning and concept consistent with the technical spirit of the invention, based on the principle that the inventor can appropriately define the concept of the terms to best describe his invention.
[0023] Throughout the specification, when a part is described as "comprising" a certain component, this means that, unless specifically stated otherwise, it does not exclude other components but may include additional components. Furthermore, terms such as "…part" or "device" as used in the specification refer to a unit that performs at least one function or operation.
[0024] Hereinafter, an embodiment of the present invention will be described.
[0025] One embodiment of the present invention provides a secondary battery comprising: an electrode assembly in which a first electrode, a separator, and a second electrode are sequentially stacked and wound; and a battery can that accommodates the electrode assembly and an electrolyte, wherein the battery can has a bottom portion on one side, an open portion on the other side opposite to the bottom portion, and a cylindrical side wall, and the electrode assembly has a first end portion into which the first electrode tab is drawn and a second end portion into which the second electrode tab is drawn, and the first end portion and the battery can are electrically connected, and the side wall of the battery can includes an insulating coating layer provided on an inner surface corresponding to the second end portion, and includes a second current collector plate electrically connected to the second electrode tab, and includes an insulating member provided between the second current collector plate and the bottom portion of the battery can.
[0026] In this specification, the first electrode and the second electrode are electrodes of opposite polarity, meaning that one of them is a positive electrode and the other is a negative electrode. In this specification, the first electrode and the second electrode may have a sheet shape, but any electrode known in the art may be used without limitation.
[0027] In this specification, the separator refers to an insulator interposed between the first electrode and the second electrode to prevent and / or insulate a short circuit between the first electrode and the second electrode of different polarities. In this specification, the separator may have a sheet shape. In this specification, the separator may be a thin insulating film having high ion permeability and mechanical strength, but any separator known in the art may be used without limitation.
[0028] In this specification, the electrolyte may be a lithium salt-containing non-aqueous electrolyte, and while a liquid phase is mainly used, any electrolyte known in the industry may be used without limitation.
[0029] In this specification, the battery can may include iron, nickel, or an alloy thereof, and may be plated with these materials, but any battery can known in the art may be used without limitation.
[0030] In the present specification, the battery can has a bottom portion having a sealed portion on one side, an opening portion having an open portion on the other side opposite the bottom portion, and a cylindrical side wall. The cylindrical side wall may have a main body portion corresponding to the portion where the electrode assembly is mounted, and a beading portion and a crimping portion formed in the other portion.
[0031] In this specification, the insulating coating layer may be a plate, thin film, tape, etc., which is a material applied in a thin thickness containing a specific insulating component, and which is insulated by applying it to a polarized portion, coming into contact with a polarized portion, or being interposed in a state of contact or separation between spaces having opposite polarities in order to prevent electrical contact or short circuits between each other.
[0032] In this specification, "withdrawn" of an electrode tab means a state in which the separator does not protect the first and / or second electrode tabs. As a result, the withdrawn or exposed tab may come into contact with an electrode having a polarity different from that of the tab inside the battery can, thereby causing a short circuit. The insulating coating layer of the present invention can easily insulate, for example, between a first end with the first electrode tab withdrawn and a second electrode having a different polarity, or between a second end with the second electrode tab withdrawn and a first electrode having a different polarity.
[0033] In the present specification, the battery can is connected to a first electrode (or, a first end) and can serve as an electrode terminal.
[0034] In this specification, the battery can may refer to a cylindrical secondary battery in which a jelly-roll form is accommodated as an electrode assembly.
[0035] In one embodiment of the present specification, the secondary battery may be a cylindrical secondary battery in which the ratio of the form factor (defined as the ratio of the diameter of the cylindrical battery to the height, i.e., the ratio of the diameter (Φ) to the height (H)) is greater than 0.4. Here, the form factor refers to a value representing the diameter and height of the cylindrical secondary battery.
[0036] A cylindrical secondary battery according to one embodiment of the present specification may be a 46110 cell, a 48750 cell, a 48110 cell, a 48800 cell, or a 46800 cell. In the numerical value representing the form factor, the first two digits represent the diameter of the cell, the next two digits represent the height of the cell, and the last digit 0 represents that the cross-section of the cell is circular.
[0037] A secondary battery according to one embodiment of the present specification may be a cylindrical secondary battery having a cylindrical cell, a diameter of 46 mm, a height of 110 mm, and a form factor ratio of 0.418.
[0038] A secondary battery according to one embodiment of the present specification may be a cylindrical secondary battery having a cylindrical cell, a diameter of 48 mm, a height of 75 mm, and a form factor ratio of 0.640.
[0039] A secondary battery according to one embodiment of the present specification may be a cylindrical secondary battery having a cylindrical cell, a diameter of 48 mm, a height of 110 mm, and a form factor ratio of 0.418.
[0040] A secondary battery according to one embodiment of the present specification may be a cylindrical secondary battery having a cylindrical cell, a diameter of 48 mm, a height of 80 mm, and a form factor ratio of 0.600.
[0041] A secondary battery according to one embodiment of the present specification may be a cylindrical secondary battery having a cylindrical cell, a diameter of 46 mm, a height of 80 mm, and a form factor ratio of 0.575.
[0042] In this specification, the battery can is electrically connected to a first end, and the battery can includes an insulating coating layer provided on an inner surface corresponding to the second end, so that the battery can and the second end have opposite polarities. Accordingly, unnecessary contact and / or short circuit between electrodes having opposite polarities can be prevented.
[0043] According to one embodiment of the present invention, the side wall of the battery can may further include an insulating coating layer provided on the inner surface corresponding to the separator.
[0044] According to one embodiment of the present invention, the second electrode comprises a current collector; and an electrode active material layer provided on one or both sides of the current collector, and the second electrode tab may be a non-electrode portion of the current collector where the electrode active material layer is not provided.
[0045] According to another embodiment of the present invention, the first electrode tab and / or the second electrode tab may be a separate configuration from the non-existent part, and the first electrode tab and / or the second electrode tab may be connected to the non-existent part by means such as welding.
[0046] In this specification, the term "current collector" may be used interchangeably with "current collector layer," and depending on the polarity, it may be aluminum, etc. in the case of a positive current collector and copper, etc. in the case of a negative current collector, but any current collector known in the industry may be used without limitation.
[0047] In this specification, the electrode active material layer may have the electrode active material applied to one or both sides of the current collector.
[0048] In this specification, the type of electrode active material varies depending on the polarity, and while lithium-containing metal oxides such as LiCoO2 and LiMn2O5 may be mainly used as the positive electrode active material, any active material known in the industry may be used without limitation, and while carbon-based materials and silicon-based materials may be mainly used as the negative electrode active material, any active material known in the industry may be used without limitation.
[0049] In this specification, the phrase “an electrode tab is a non-electrode portion of the current collector in which the electrode active material layer is not provided” means that the non-electrode portion on the current collector acts as an electrode tab. However, a short circuit may occur if it comes into contact with an electrode having a polarity different from that of the non-electrode portion.
[0050] In the present specification, an insulating coating layer is provided on the side wall of a battery can (e.g., first electrode) corresponding to the unsold portion (e.g., unsold portion of the second electrode), so that a short circuit can be prevented.
[0051] In the present specification, the second electrode tab is a blank portion, and the blank portion may mean a metal foil formed by slitting a stripe pattern electrode to reduce cell resistance.
[0052] According to one embodiment of the present invention, the electrode tab may be bent in the direction of the winding center or the outer direction of the electrode assembly.
[0053] According to one embodiment of the present invention, a second current collector plate electrically connected to the second electrode tab may be further included, and an insulating member provided between the second current collector plate and the bottom portion of the battery can may be further included.
[0054] In the present specification, the second electrode tab (or non-conductive portion) may be electrically connected by welding to the second current collector plate.
[0055] In the present specification, an insulating member (e.g., an insulator) may be included between the second current collector plate and the bottom portion of the battery can. Here, the insulating member may not have a conventional bent shape but may have a straight shape. Accordingly, the waste of space caused by the insulating member being bent is eliminated, and the space that can be secured by the electrode assembly may be increased.
[0056] In the secondary battery according to the above embodiment, the diameter of the electrode assembly that can be accommodated in a battery can of the same size can be increased by dividing and allocating the insulating positions of the insulating member and the insulating coating layer respectively, relative to the space occupied by the conventional insulating member (additionally insulating tape).
[0057] According to one embodiment of the present invention, the second end may be disposed adjacent to the bottom portion of the battery can.
[0058] According to one embodiment of the present invention, a second electrode terminal having a structure riveted through a through hole formed in the bottom portion of the battery can may be further included.
[0059] In this specification, a riveting structure of the electrode terminal is formed by bending the upper surface of the electrode terminal so that the outer diameter of the portion of the electrode terminal exposed to the outside of the battery can is larger than the outer diameter of the through hole of the battery can. At this time, the portion of the gasket exposed to the outside of the battery can is also bent together with the electrode terminal at the same angle by the process of pressing with the pressure. The outer diameter of the through hole refers to the diameter of the through hole.
[0060] According to one embodiment of the present invention, a gasket interposed between the battery can and the second electrode terminal may be included.
[0061] According to one embodiment of the present invention, the insulating coating layer may include one or more selected from alumina (Al2O3), aluminum nitride (AlN), magnesium oxide (MgO), boron nitride (BN), silicon carbide (SiC) and silicon nitride (Si3N4), but is not limited thereto.
[0062] As described above, the insulating coating layer includes a high heat-resistant material such as alumina, and when the internal temperature of the battery rises to a high temperature, it exhibits an excellent heat dissipation effect, thereby maintaining the excellent insulation properties of the insulating coating layer and effectively insulating the battery can connected to the second end of the electrode assembly and the first end.
[0063] According to one embodiment of the present invention, the thickness of the insulating coating layer may be 200 μm or less.
[0064] According to one embodiment of the present invention, the thickness of the insulating coating layer may be greater than 30㎛ and less than or equal to 200㎛.
[0065] According to one embodiment of the present invention, the thickness of the insulating coating layer may be greater than 30㎛, greater than 40㎛, or greater than 50㎛, or less than 200㎛, less than 190㎛, or less than 180㎛.
[0066] In the present specification, when satisfying the thickness range of the insulating coating layer as described above, the diameter of the electrode assembly accommodated in the battery can can be configured to be large.
[0067] In one embodiment of the present invention, the thickness of the insulating member may be greater than 500 μm and less than or equal to 1,500 μm.
[0068] According to one embodiment of the present invention, the thickness of the insulating member may be greater than 500 μm, greater than 600 μm, or greater than 700 μm.
[0069] According to one embodiment of the present invention, the thickness of the insulating member may be 1500㎛ or less, 1400㎛ or less, or 1300㎛ or less.
[0070] In the present specification, the thickness range of the insulating member as described above is significantly thicker than the insulating coating layer, and when this is satisfied, it is possible to effectively insulate between a battery can and a current collector plate of different polarities.
[0071] According to one embodiment of the present invention, the thickness of the insulating coating layer may be 0.45% or less relative to the diameter of the electrode assembly in a wound state.
[0072] According to one embodiment of the present invention, the thickness of the insulating coating layer may be 0.06% or more relative to the diameter of the electrode assembly in a wound state.
[0073] In this specification, when the thickness of the insulating coating layer relative to the diameter of the electrode assembly in the wound state satisfies the above range, the diameter of the electrode assembly accommodated in the battery can can be configured to be large.
[0074] In one embodiment of the present specification, the first end may be located on the opening side of the battery can.
[0075] In one embodiment of the present specification, a first current collector plate electrically connected to the first electrode tab may be further included.
[0076] In one embodiment of the present specification, the battery can further comprises a sealing body for sealing an opening, and the sealing body may include a cap plate and a sealing gasket. For example, the cap plate sealing the opening of the battery can may be non-polar and made of a metal material, and the sealing gasket, which has insulating and elastic properties, may be made of polypropylene, polybutylene terephthalate, polyfluoroethylene, etc., but is not limited thereto.
[0077] In this specification, the first electrode tab (or non-conductive portion) may be electrically connected to the first current collector plate by welding. The first current collector plate may be made of a conductive metal material such as aluminum, steel, or nickel, but is not limited thereto.
[0078] In the present specification, the battery can may include a clamping portion that extends inwardly into the battery can and is bent to secure the sealing member by wrapping around and securing the edges of the sealing gasket and the cap plate.
[0079] In this specification, a beading portion may be included in an area adjacent to the open end and pressed into the interior of the battery can. The beading portion supports the edge of the seal, in particular the outer surface of the sealing gasket, when the seal is secured by the clamping portion.
[0080] In this specification, at least a portion of the edge of the first current collector plate that does not contact the first electrode tab (non-contacting portion) may be interposed between the beading portion and the sealing gasket and secured by the clamping portion. Optionally, at least a portion of the edge of the first current collector plate may be secured by welding to the inner circumference of the beading portion adjacent to the clamping portion.
[0081] According to one embodiment of the present invention, the first electrode may be a negative electrode and the second electrode may be a positive electrode.
[0082] Another embodiment of the present invention provides a battery module and / or battery pack including a secondary battery according to the above embodiment.
[0083] Another embodiment of the present invention provides a vehicle comprising one or more battery packs according to the above-described embodiment.
[0085] Hereinafter, an embodiment of the present invention will be described with reference to the drawings.
[0086] FIG. 1 illustrates a secondary battery (100) in a conventional embodiment in which an insulating member (3) (e.g., an insulator) with a thickness of about 1 mm (about 1000 μm) wraps around a battery can (1), a second electrode current collector (10), and a second end (5) at once, and additional insulating member, such as an insulating tape (4), wraps around the periphery of the second end (5) one or more times. The above insulating method not only complicates the battery assembly process, but also has the problem that the volume occupied by the insulating member within the battery can is large, which reduces the volume that the electrode assembly can occupy, thereby reducing the battery capacity.
[0087] FIGS. 2 and 3 illustrate a secondary battery according to an embodiment of the present invention, wherein the side wall of the battery can (1) includes an insulating coating layer (7) provided on an inner surface corresponding to a second end (5). As shown in FIG. 2, the insulating coating layer (7) may be provided only on the inner surface corresponding to the second end (5). Additionally, as shown in FIG. 3, the insulating coating layer (7) may be additionally provided on an inner surface corresponding to a separator (or the entire inner wall of the battery can (1)), including the inner surface corresponding to the second end (5).
[0088] The secondary battery according to the above embodiment has the effect of simplifying the process and increasing the diameter of the electrode assembly, thereby increasing the battery capacity.
[0089] Referring to FIG. 4, a battery pack (200) according to an embodiment of the present invention includes an assembly in which secondary battery cells (201) are electrically connected and a pack housing (202) that accommodates the same. A cylindrical secondary battery cell (201) refers to a secondary battery according to the embodiment described above.
[0090] In the above drawing, for the convenience of drawing, components such as a busbar, cooling unit, and external terminal for electrical connection of the secondary batteries (201) are omitted.
[0091] The above battery pack (200) may be mounted in a vehicle. The vehicle may be, for example, an electric vehicle, a hybrid vehicle, or a plug-in hybrid vehicle. The vehicle includes a four-wheeled vehicle or a two-wheeled vehicle.
[0092] FIG. 5 is a drawing for explaining a vehicle including the battery pack (200) of FIG. 4. Referring to FIG. 5, a vehicle (V) according to one embodiment of the present specification includes a battery pack (200) according to one embodiment of the present specification. The vehicle (V) operates by receiving power from the battery pack (200) according to one embodiment of the present invention.
[0094] Hereinafter, preferred embodiments are presented to aid in understanding the present invention; however, the above embodiments are merely illustrative of the description, and it is obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes and modifications are possible within the scope and spirit of the description, and that such variations and modifications fall within the scope of the appended claims.
[0096] Comparative Example 1
