Abstract
Description
Technology Field
[0001] The present invention relates to a battery module and a battery pack including the same, and more specifically, to a battery module with improved cooling performance and a battery pack including the same. Background Technology
[0002] In modern society, as the use of portable devices such as mobile phones, laptops, camcorders, and digital cameras has become commonplace, the development of technologies related to such mobile devices is becoming active. Furthermore, rechargeable secondary batteries are being utilized as power sources for electric vehicles (EVs), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (P-HEVs) as a solution to address air pollution caused by conventional gasoline vehicles using fossil fuels; consequently, the need for the development of secondary batteries is increasing.
[0003] Currently commercialized rechargeable batteries include nickel-cadmium, nickel-hydrogen, nickel-zinc, and lithium-ion batteries. Among these, lithium-ion batteries are gaining attention for their advantages, such as the ability to charge and discharge freely with almost no memory effect compared to nickel-based batteries, a very low self-discharge rate, and high energy density.
[0004] These lithium secondary batteries primarily use lithium-based oxides and carbon materials as the positive and negative active materials, respectively. The lithium secondary battery comprises an electrode assembly in which a positive plate and a negative plate, each coated with the positive and negative active materials, are arranged with a separator in between, and a battery case that seals and houses the electrode assembly together with an electrolyte.
[0005] Generally, lithium secondary batteries can be classified according to the shape of the casing into can-type secondary batteries, in which the electrode assembly is embedded in a metal can, and pouch-type secondary batteries, in which the electrode assembly is embedded in a pouch of aluminum laminate sheet.
[0006] In the case of secondary batteries used in small devices, 2 to 3 battery cells are arranged, whereas in the case of secondary batteries used in medium to large devices such as automobiles, battery modules in which multiple battery cells are electrically connected are used. In such battery modules, capacity and output are improved by connecting multiple battery cells in series or parallel to form a stack of battery cells. Additionally, one or more battery modules can be mounted together with various control and protection systems, such as a Battery Management System (BMS) and a cooling system, to form a battery pack.
[0007] If the temperature of a secondary battery rises above the optimal level, its performance may deteriorate, and in severe cases, there is a risk of explosion or fire. In particular, battery modules or battery packs equipped with multiple secondary batteries—that is, battery cells—can experience a rapid and severe temperature rise as heat generated from these cells accumulates within a confined space. In other words, while battery modules with stacked cells and battery packs equipped with such modules can achieve high output, it is not easy to dissipate the heat generated by the cells during charging and discharging. If heat dissipation from the cells is not properly achieved, cell degradation accelerates, shortening their lifespan and increasing the risk of explosion or fire. Furthermore, battery modules included in automotive battery packs are frequently exposed to direct sunlight and may be subjected to high-temperature conditions, such as during the summer or in desert regions.
[0008] Meanwhile, due to the structure in which battery cells are densely packed, battery modules and battery packs tend to have higher temperatures in the center than in the outer regions. Since temperature variations within a battery module lead to performance degradation, such as reduced output and shortened lifespan, it is crucial to minimize temperature differences between the cells inside the module. In other words, when constructing battery modules or battery packs, it is very important to ensure stable and effective cooling performance while simultaneously resolving temperature variations among the internal cells. The problem to be solved
[0009] The problem that the present invention aims to solve is to provide a battery module effective in eliminating cooling variations between battery cells and a battery pack including the same.
[0010] However, the problems that the embodiments of the present invention aim to solve are not limited to the problems described above and can be expanded in various ways within the scope of the technical ideas included in the present invention. means of solving the problem
[0011] A battery module according to one embodiment of the present invention comprises: a battery cell stack in which a plurality of battery cells are stacked; a module frame in which the battery cell stack is housed; and a cooling frame located at the bottom or top of the module frame and having a cooling channel through which a refrigerant flows. The cooling frame includes an inlet and an outlet connected to the cooling channel. The inlet is located on one side of the cooling frame, and the outlet is located on the other side of the cooling frame opposite to the one side. A first direction change switch is disposed in the inlet, and a second direction change switch is disposed in the outlet.
[0012] The above cooling channel may include a left cooling channel and a right cooling channel located at the outermost part of the cooling frame, respectively, and a central cooling channel located between the left cooling channel and the right cooling channel.
[0013] The refrigerant introduced through the above inlet may flow along the left cooling path or the right cooling path by the first direction switching switch, and may flow along the central cooling path by the second direction switching switch.
[0014] The above cooling channel may include a left core cooling channel located between the left cooling channel and the central cooling channel, and a right core cooling channel located between the right cooling channel and the central cooling channel. The refrigerant that has passed through the central cooling channel by the second direction change switch may flow along at least one of the left core cooling channel and the right core cooling channel.
[0015] The refrigerant flowing along at least one of the left core cooling path and the right core cooling path may flow along the right cooling path or the left cooling path by the first direction switching switch and be discharged through the discharge section by the second direction switching switch.
[0016] The first direction switching switch above can be switched so that the inlet is connected to one of the left cooling channel and the right cooling channel.
[0017] The second direction change switch above can be switched so that the discharge section is connected to one of the left cooling channel and the right cooling channel.
[0018] The above left cooling channel, the above right cooling channel, and the above central cooling channel may extend along the longitudinal direction of the battery cell.
[0019] The first direction change switch and the second direction change switch can periodically change direction so that the refrigerant can flow first from the left or right side of the cooling frame.
[0020] The battery module may further include a temperature sensor that measures the temperature of the left and right portions of the battery module, respectively. Based on the temperature information measured by the temperature sensor, the first direction switching switch may prioritize supplying the refrigerant to the cooling path corresponding to the portion with the higher temperature between the left and right portions of the battery module. Effects of the invention
[0021] According to embodiments of the present invention, by providing a cooling device capable of changing the flow of a cooling channel according to the temperature status of the battery cells, the cooling variation within the battery module can be reduced.
[0022] The effects of the present invention are not limited to those mentioned above, and other unmentioned effects will be clearly understood by those skilled in the art from the description in the claims. Brief explanation of the drawing

FIG. 2 is a perspective view showing a battery cell included in the battery module of FIG. 1. Figure 3 is a perspective view showing a cooling frame included in the battery module of Figure 1. [0024] Hereinafter, various embodiments of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the attached drawings so that those skilled in the art can easily implement the present invention. The present invention may be embodied in various different forms and is not limited to the embodiments described herein.
[0025] To clearly explain the present invention, parts unrelated to the explanation have been omitted, and the same reference numerals are used for identical or similar components throughout the specification.
[0026] Furthermore, the size and thickness of each component shown in the drawings are depicted arbitrarily for convenience of explanation, and thus the present invention is not necessarily limited to what is illustrated. Thicknesses have been enlarged in the drawings to clearly represent various layers and regions. Additionally, for convenience of explanation, the thickness of some layers and regions has been exaggerated in the drawings.
[0027] Furthermore, when a part such as a layer, membrane, region, or plate is said to be "on" or "on" another part, this includes not only the case where it is "directly above" the other part, but also the case where there is another part in between. Conversely, when a part is said to be "directly above" another part, it means that there is no other part in between. Also, saying that a part is "on" or "on" a reference part means that it is located above or below the reference part, and does not necessarily mean that it is located "on" or "on" facing the opposite direction of gravity.
[0028] Furthermore, throughout the specification, when a part is described as "including" a certain component, this means that, unless specifically stated otherwise, it does not exclude other components but may include additional components.
[0029] Additionally, throughout the specification, "planar" means when the subject part is viewed from above, and "cross-sectional" means when the cross-section obtained by vertically cutting the subject part is viewed from the side.
[0030] FIG. 1 is an exploded perspective view showing a battery module according to one embodiment of the present invention. FIG. 2 is a perspective view showing a battery cell included in the battery module of FIG. 1.
[0031] Referring to FIGS. 1 and 2, a battery module (100) according to one embodiment of the present invention comprises: a battery cell stack (120) in which a plurality of battery cells (110) are stacked; a module frame (200) in which the battery cell stack (120) is housed; and a cooling frame (300) located at the bottom or top of the module frame (200) and having a cooling channel.
[0032] First, referring to FIG. 2, it is preferable that the battery cell (110) be a pouch-type battery cell. For example, the battery cell (110) according to the present embodiment has a structure in which two electrode leads (111, 112) face each other and protrude from one end (114a) and the other end (114b) of the cell body (113), respectively. More specifically, the electrode leads (111, 112) are connected to an electrode assembly (not shown) and protrude from the electrode assembly (not shown) to the outside of the battery cell (110). Meanwhile, alternatively, unidirectional pouch-type battery cells in which the two electrode leads protrude in the same direction may be used.
[0033] Meanwhile, the battery cell (110) can be manufactured by bonding the two ends (114a, 114b) of the cell case (114) and the one side (114c) connecting them, while the electrode assembly (not shown) is housed in the cell case (114). In other words, the battery cell (110) according to the present embodiment has a total of three sealing parts (114sa, 114sb, 114sc), and the sealing parts (114sa, 114sb, 114sc) are sealed by a method such as heat fusion, and the other side can be formed as a connecting part (115). The cell case (114) can be made of a laminate sheet including a resin layer and a metal layer.
[0034] Additionally, the connecting portion (115) may extend along one edge of the battery cell (110), and a protrusion (110p) of the battery cell (110), called a bat-ear, may be formed at the end of the connecting portion (115). Additionally, as the cell case (114) is sealed with the protruding electrode leads (111, 112) in between, a terrace portion (116) may be formed between the electrode leads (111, 112) and the cell body (113). That is, the battery cell (110) includes a terrace portion (116) that extends from the cell case (114) in the direction in which the electrode leads (111, 112) protrude.
[0035] The battery cells (110) may be composed of multiple cells, and multiple battery cells (110) may be stacked so as to be electrically connected to each other to form a battery cell stack (120). Referring to FIG. 1, the battery cells (110) may be stacked along the y-axis direction to form a battery cell stack (120). Accordingly, the electrode leads (111, 112) may protrude toward the x-axis direction and the -x-axis direction.
[0036] Meanwhile, the module frame (200) may be opened in the direction in which the electrode leads (111, 112) protrude (x-axis direction, -x-axis direction), and although not specifically illustrated, end plates (not shown) may be positioned on each of the open sides of the module frame (200). The module frame (200) and the end plates (not shown) can protect various electrical components, including the battery cell stack (120), from external impact. To this end, the module frame (200) and the end plates must have a certain strength and may include a metal such as aluminum.
[0037] Although not specifically described, a battery cell according to another embodiment of the present invention may be a prismatic battery cell or a cylindrical battery cell.
[0038] Hereinafter, a cooling frame according to the present embodiment will be described in detail with reference to FIGS. 3 to 5.
[0039] FIG. 3 is a perspective view showing a cooling frame included in the battery module of FIG. 1. FIG. 4 and FIG. 5 are plan views of the cooling frame of FIG. 3 viewed along the -z axis direction in the xy plane.
[0040] Referring to FIG. 1 and FIG. 3 to 5, as described above, the cooling frame (300) according to the present embodiment is located at the bottom or top of the module frame (200) and has a cooling channel (300F) inside. FIG. 1 illustrates a cooling frame (300) located at the bottom of the module frame (200) as an embodiment of the present invention, but it is obvious that a cooling frame located at the top of the module frame (200) is also possible.
[0041] The cooling frame (300) according to the present embodiment includes an inlet (310) and an outlet (320) connected to a cooling channel (300F). A refrigerant is introduced into the cooling channel (300F) through the inlet (310), and the introduced refrigerant flows along the cooling channel (300F) and is discharged to the outside through the outlet (320). The refrigerant may be cooling water, although there are no specific limitations, as a medium for cooling.
[0042] A first direction change switch (300S1) is provided in the inlet section (310), and a second direction change switch (300S2) is provided in the outlet section (320). As will be described later, the first direction change switch (300S1) and the second direction change switch (300S2) are responsible for the function of switching the movement path of the refrigerant.
[0043] The inlet section (310) is located on one side of the cooling frame (300), and the outlet section (320) is located on the other side opposite to the one side. That is, the inlet section (310) and the outlet section (320) protrude from the cooling frame (300) facing each other. Although the inlet section (310) and the outlet section (320) are shown in the form of pipes, there are no special restrictions on their shape as long as they supply and discharge refrigerant.
[0044] Meanwhile, the cooling frame (300) has partitions (300W) formed to guide the flow of refrigerant, and a cooling channel (300F) is formed between these partitions (300W). The cooling frame (300) according to the present embodiment may have an open top. The bottom portion (210) of the module frame (200) is joined to the open top of the cooling frame (300), so that the cooling channel (300F) can be sealed.
[0045] Meanwhile, although not specifically illustrated, when the cooling frame is located on the upper part of the module frame (200), the cooling frame may have an open bottom. The ceiling portion (220) of the module frame (200) is joined to the open bottom of the cooling frame so that the cooling channel can be sealed.
[0046] However, the shapes of the cooling frames above are merely examples, and as another embodiment, a structure in which a cooling channel (300F) is formed inside without any open parts is also possible.
[0047] The cooling channel (300F) according to the present embodiment may include a left cooling channel (300L) and a right cooling channel (300R) located at the outermost part of the cooling frame (300), respectively, and a central cooling channel (300C) located between the left cooling channel (300L) and the right cooling channel (300R). For convenience of explanation, in this specification, the left side refers to the -y-axis direction and the right side refers to the y-axis direction. Referring again to FIGS. 1 and FIGS. 3, the left cooling channel (300L), the right cooling channel (300R), and the central cooling channel (300C) may be in a form that extends along the length direction of the battery cell (110). The length direction of the battery cell (110) is a direction parallel to the direction in which the electrode leads (111, 112) protrude, and may be the x-axis direction or the -x-axis direction. Additionally, the left cooling channel (300L), the right cooling channel (300R), and the central cooling channel (300C) are each depicted as having one channel, but since there is no special limitation on the number of channels, each can be configured as multiple channels.
[0048] The refrigerant introduced through the inlet (310) may flow along the left cooling path (300L) or the right cooling path (300R) by the first direction change switch (300S1), and may flow along the central cooling path (300C) by the second direction change switch (300S2). FIG. 4 illustrates the state in which the refrigerant first flows along the left cooling path (300L) by the first direction change switch (300S1), and FIG. 5 illustrates the state in which the refrigerant first flows along the right cooling path (300R) by the first direction change switch (300S1).
[0049] The first direction switching switch (300S1) can be switched so that the inlet (310) is connected to either the left cooling channel (300L) or the right cooling channel (300R). For example, the center is configured to rotate 90 degrees clockwise or counterclockwise while remaining fixed, thereby switching the flow of the refrigerant.
[0050] Likewise, the second direction change switch (300S2) can be switched so that the discharge section (320) is connected to either the left cooling channel (300L) or the right cooling channel (300R). For example, the center is configured to rotate 90 degrees clockwise or counterclockwise while remaining fixed, thereby switching the flow of the refrigerant.
[0051] When the inlet section (310) is connected to the left cooling channel (300L), it is preferable that the outlet section (320) be connected to the right cooling channel (300R). Conversely, when the inlet section (310) is connected to the right cooling channel (300R), it is preferable that the outlet section (320) be connected to the left cooling channel (300L). The first direction change switch (300S1) and the second direction change switch (300S2) can be adjusted to form such a connection configuration.
[0052] Meanwhile, the cooling channel (300F) may include a left core cooling channel (300LC) located between the left cooling channel (300L) and the central cooling channel (300C), and a right core cooling channel (300RC) located between the right cooling channel (300R) and the central cooling channel (300C).
[0053] The refrigerant flowing along the central cooling path (300C) by the second direction change switch (300S2) may flow along at least one of the left core cooling path (300LC) and the right core cooling path (300RC).
[0054] The refrigerant flowing along at least one of the left core cooling channel (300LC) and the right core cooling channel (300RC) can flow along the right cooling channel (300R) or the left cooling channel (300L) by the first direction change switch (300S1) and be discharged through the discharge section (320) by the second direction change switch (300S2).
[0055] Below, the flow of the refrigerant according to each of the cases in Figs. 4 and 5 will be explained in detail.
[0056] First, referring to FIG. 4, the inlet section (310) can be connected to the left cooling channel (300L) by the first direction change switch (300S1), and the outlet section (320) can be connected to the right cooling channel (300R) by the second direction change switch (300S2).
[0057] The refrigerant introduced through the inlet (310) flows along the left cooling path (300L) by the first direction change switch (300S1), and then flows along the central cooling path (300C) by the second direction change switch (300S2). The refrigerant that passes through the central cooling path (300C) flows along the left core cooling path (300LC) and the right core cooling path (300RC), collects again, and then flows along the right cooling path (300R) by the first direction change switch (300S1). Finally, the refrigerant is discharged through the discharge section (320) by the second direction change switch (300S2).
[0058] That is, in the case of FIG. 4, the refrigerant introduced through the inlet (310) first flows along the left cooling path (300L). The refrigerant in the left cooling path (300L) has a lower temperature than the refrigerant in the right cooling path (300R), where a significant amount of heat exchange has already taken place. That is, when the cooling performance is to be increased for the left region of the battery cell stack (120), the cooling frame (300) according to the present embodiment has the shape of FIG. 4.
[0059] Next, referring to FIG. 5, the inlet section (310) can be connected to the right cooling channel (300R) by the first direction change switch (300S1), and the outlet section (320) can be connected to the left cooling channel (300L) by the second direction change switch (300S2). That is, the first direction change switch (300S1) and the second direction change switch (300S2) of FIG. 5 are rotated 90 degrees clockwise compared to the case of FIG. 4.
[0060] The refrigerant introduced through the inlet (310) flows along the right cooling path (300R) by the first direction change switch (300S1), and then flows along the central cooling path (300C) by the second direction change switch (300S2). The refrigerant that passes through the central cooling path (300C) flows along the left cooling path (300LC) and the right cooling path (300RC), then collects again, and flows along the left cooling path (300L) by the first direction change switch (300S1). Finally, the refrigerant is discharged through the discharge section (320) by the second direction change switch (300S2).
[0061] That is, in the case of FIG. 5, the refrigerant introduced through the inlet (310) first flows along the right cooling path (300R). The refrigerant in the right cooling path (300R) has a lower temperature than the refrigerant in the left cooling path (300L), where a significant amount of heat exchange has already taken place. That is, when the cooling performance is to be increased for the right region of the battery cell stack (120), the cooling frame (300) according to the present embodiment has the shape of FIG. 5.
[0062] As described above, in the cooling frame (300) according to the present embodiment, the refrigerant that has passed through the left cooling channel (300L) or the right cooling channel (300R) first is configured to flow along the central cooling channel (300C). As the first direction change switch (300S1) and the second direction change switch (300S2) are switched, the incoming refrigerant may first flow through either the left cooling channel (300L) or the right cooling channel (300R).
[0063] That is, the first direction change switch (300S1) and the second direction change switch (300S2) according to the present embodiment periodically change direction, so that the refrigerant can flow first from the left or right side of the cooling frame (300). By configuring the left and right parts of the battery cell stack (120) to be cooled preferentially in alternating periods, the temperature difference between the battery cells (110) can be significantly reduced. Eliminating the temperature difference between the battery cells (110) can lead to performance improvements, such as increased output and extended lifespan of the battery module.
[0064] In addition, in the case of a battery cell stack (120), since a number of battery cells (110) are stacked, the battery cell (110) located at the innermost position has difficulty dissipating heat. That is, generally, the temperature of the center of the battery cell stack (120) is higher than that of the outer part. At this time, in the cooling frame (300) according to the present embodiment, the refrigerant introduced flows through the left cooling path (300L) or the right cooling path (300R) and then immediately flows along the central cooling path (300C). It is designed so that a refrigerant with relatively low temperature, that is, with relatively less heat exchange, flows along the central cooling path (300C), thereby enabling effective heat exchange for the center of the battery cell stack (120) with a high temperature. Ultimately, cooling performance is improved, and temperature differences between battery cells can be eliminated.
[0065] Meanwhile, referring to FIGS. 4 and FIGS. 5, the battery module (100) according to the present embodiment may further include a temperature sensor (400) for measuring the temperature of the left part and the right part of the battery module (100).
[0066] Based on temperature information measured by a temperature sensor, the first direction change switch (300S1) can supply the refrigerant first to the cooling path corresponding to the part with the higher temperature between the left part and the right part of the battery module (100).
[0067] That is, the first direction change switch (300S1) and the second direction change switch (300S2) are not switched at regular intervals, but the switching can be controlled so that the refrigerant is delivered first to the part with a higher temperature based on the temperature data of the left and right parts measured through the temperature sensor (400).
[0068] In this embodiment, terms indicating directions such as front, back, left, right, up, and down have been used; however, these terms are for convenience of explanation only and may vary depending on the location of the object or the observer.
[0069] One or more battery modules according to the embodiment described above can be mounted together with various control and protection systems, such as a Battery Management System (BMS), a Battery Disconnect Unit (BDU), and a cooling system, to form a battery pack.
[0070] The above-mentioned battery module or battery pack can be applied to various devices. Specifically, it can be applied to means of transportation such as electric bicycles, electric vehicles, and hybrids, but is not limited thereto and can be applied to various devices capable of using secondary batteries.
[0071] Although preferred embodiments of the present invention have been described in detail above, the scope of the present invention is not limited thereto, and various modifications and improvements by those skilled in the art using the basic concept of the present invention as defined in the following claims also fall within the scope of the present invention.
