Abstract

The present invention describes a system and method for the detection and measurement of chloride ions in aqueous solutions. The method utilizes an innovative membrane, extracted from the cuticle of the prickly pear cactus (Opuntia ficus-indica), which acts as a selective barrier, allowing the diffusion of chloride ions to the sensor of an electronic meter. This meter comprises a housing, nickel and copper probes, and a data acquisition module that accurately measures and records the obtained values. The process includes the extraction and treatment of the membrane, ensuring its functionality through characterization tests such as conductivity, viscosity, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), which confirm its cellulose composition. Furthermore, metal-based electrodes with high sensitivity and accuracy were selected for the detection of chloride ions.
