AI Technical Summary
Technical Problem
Conventional forestry equipment, such as mulching heads, struggle to maintain consistent contact with the ground when encountering varying terrain, leading to potential damage due to lifting off or embedding into the ground, especially in elevated geometries.
Method used
An active float system that adjusts hydraulic pressure to maintain contact between the equipment and the ground by detecting ground forces and adjusting lift cylinder pressure within target deadbands, ensuring rapid response times to terrain changes.
Benefits of technology
The system enhances ground following capability, reducing wear and improving performance by preventing excessive lifting or sinking of the equipment, thereby maintaining efficient operation and reducing power consumption.

Abstract
A method for controlling an attachment provided to a vehicle arm, the method comprising: detecting a ground force on the attachment; determining whether the ground force is outside the target dead zone, wherein the target dead zone is based on the height of the attachment above the ground; and, if the ground force is outside the target dead zone, adjusting the pressure of a cylinder to bring the ground force within the dead zone. A system for controlling an attachment on an arm, the system comprising: a control system; a hydraulic system for at least a first piston provided to the arm; and a first pressure sensor for detecting a pressure related to the attachment and communicating the detected pressure to the control system, wherein the control system determines whether the pressure is outside a target dead zone and, if so, adjusts a pressure on the piston to bring the detected pressure within the dead zone.
