Abstract
The design of the Electric Lesung Batu is beyond that of the traditional one. While the traditional Lesung Batu has 2 components (the Lesung and the Anak Lesung), the Electric Lesung Batu is comprised of 3 main components – the Base, the Cavity, and the Lid. This unique design produces simpler and faster processing of ingredients. The Base (figure 2), is very much like that of the base of a household blender. Any existing blender base can be re-purposed to become the Electric Lesung Batu base. It contains a powerful electric motor (~600W and ~ 12000 rpm). This motor is mounted at the base, and it drives a jagged rotating connector at the top of the base. This connector, in turns, drives the spinner at the bottom of the Lesung Batu Cavity. The wall of the base (1) is made out of PVC plastic. The base has a control (2) for turning the motor ON and OFF. It can also control the speed of the motor. The motor is connected to a 240V AC via the power cable (3). The Cavity (figure 3) is the main component where the action (grinding, pulverizing, crushing) takes place. It is a cylindrical cavity, with its outer layer wall (1) made from PVC plastic, with 11.5 cm diameter, and 18 cm tall. The bottom of the cavity (2) has two important features; a locking mechanism to the base, and a securely fixed spinner (5) attached to a jagged rotating connector to connect to the motor at the base. The inner layer wall has two different finishing; the upper inner wall (3) is made from PVC plastic (similar to the outer layer). The lower inner wall (4) and the bottom are finished with a combination of food-grade resin and coarse chipped stone to provide a course finish. This finish surface is necessary to provide sufficient friction to have the effect of grinding, pulverizing, and crushing, when the ingredient is spun against it. The Lid (figure 4) is an important component to make the cavity complete. It is made from cement to obtain the required weight, so that it can secure the cavity when it is put in place. It has a handle (1) for easy grip and a bottom part (2) which snuggly closes the cavity. The bottom part surface (3) is finished with a combination of food-grade resin and coarse chipped stone to provide a course finish (just like that of the lower inner wall cavity). When the lid is placed on top of the cavity, it completely encloses the Lesung Batu cavity, providing a secured cavity for the ingredient to spin freely. The Spinner (figure 5) is designed to spin, and not to cut ingredient. It has three pair of finger-like stainless steel rod (1). These pair of rods have three different length to provide sufficient reach to the ingredient within the Lesung Batu cavity. The spinner end is secured to the jagged rotating connector. The motor at the base will drive this spinner (at ~12000 rpm), and the spinner will then spin the ingredient against the course wall, top, and bottom of the cavity. This provides the effect of grinding, pulverizing, and crushing of ingredient, producing in the same effect by the traditional Lesung Batu. To use the electric Lesung Batu, the ingredient is cut to smaller pieces (e.g. chili and onion into halves or quarters) and then placed into the cavity. It can be filled up to its capacity. Place the lid into position, and secure the Lesung Batu cavity onto its Base. Turn ON the switch and start grinding at an interval of 3-4 second bursts. Depending on the quantity and the required texture (course / fine), 3 to 5 bursts should be sufficient to do the job.
