Shackle and method of assembly

Abstract

A shackle (1) comprising a bow (2) comprising a flexible elongate member having a first end (21) and a second end (22). A pin (3) is configured to removably engage with the bow, and a fastener (4 – Fig. 2) is configured to engage the pin. The fastener comprises a complementary engagement formation to the pin. In operation, the shackle is assembled with the bow affixed to the pin by insertion of the pin through thimbles (23) at each end of the bow, and closing the open end and securing the thimbles on the pin with the fastener, thereby closing the shackle. The pin has two ends wherein at least one of the two ends is an opening end, and has an internal bore extending into the pin from the opening end that includes a female engagement formation. The fastener includes a male engagement formation complementary to the female engagement formation of the pin. This arrangement protects the engagement formations from clogging by grit and debris, and to damage by impacts – in either case potentially making opening and closing of the shackle difficult or even impossible.
