METHOD OF PREPARING Melastoma malabathricum LEAF EXTRACT WITH ANTIOXIDANT AND ANTIBACTERIAL PROPERTIES

Abstract

The present utility model relates to the method of preparing leaf extract from Melastoma malabathricum with high antibacterial and high antioxidant properties compared to previous plant extracts which can be further used in the preparation of biopharmaceutical and cosmetic products. The process consists of harvesting the leaves, sorting the leaves to remove ones with visible insect bites, microbial contamination, or nutrient deficiency, washing the leaves with tap water, rinsing the leaves with chlorinated water, air-drying the leaves, oven-drying, grinding the ovendried leaves, macerating the ground leaves in ethanol, separating the ground leaves from the ethanol via filtration, and drying the ethanol which results in a dried extract. The extract has antibacterial activities against Enterococcus faecium (NCTC 12204) with an MIC99 value of 4 mg / mL and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA, ATCC 33592) with an MIC99 value of 8 mg / mL.
