Abstract

The present invention relates to a process for the isolation of cytotoxic triterpenoid, 2hydroxdiplopterol from Arisaema jacquemontii Blume. Mature fruits of the plant were dried and their chloroform extract made. The glass column was packed with silica gel and CHCl3 extract was placed in packed silica column in the form of slurry. The column was eluted with increasing polarities of hexane / chloroform and various column fractions obtained. The fraction F-2 obtained with hexane / chloroform (9.5:0.5) as the eluting solvent system was rechromatographed over flash silica column with hexane / chloroform (9.0:1.0) as the solvent system. This afforded the pure compound, cytotoxic triterpenoid, 2hydroxydiplopterol (1).
