The invention relates to a process for the preparation of formula I Which process comprises pyrolysing a compound of formula II wherein X is chloro The invention also relates’ to a process for the preparation of dichlorofcjlvene from a substituted cyclopentadiene and to the compound which may be used as an intermediate for the manufacture of dichlorofutvene. The present invention provides eprocess which makes it possible to prepaid dichlorofulvene in high yields and good quaMy in an economically and ecologically advantageous way
