Abstract

The invention relates to process of preparing Methyl ester (biodiesel) which comprises the following steps. Potassium hydroxide was dissolved in 16.59% of Methanol by constant shaking until it became completely clear. 5 liters of Brassica campestris oil containing triglyceride was taken in a 10 liters conical flask, and KOH and methanol solution was gently poured in the flask. Using a large size magnet stirrer for stirring the solution in the flask, the flask mouth was tightly covered with a cork to prevent the loss of methanol. The reaction mixture was kept just above the boiling point of alcohol (160 F) to speed up the reaction. The mixture was stirred for 4 hours; the following reaction took place during the stirring process. After stirring the mixture for 24 hours constantly at room temperature, the mixture was allowed to settle down. Due to gravity, two separate layers became visible; the glycerin, which has heavy particles, settled down at the bottom, and the above clear amber yellow layer was collected and used as biodiesel.
